From its murals to its famous taquerias (where you’ll find New York’s best tacos), East Harlem is considered one of New York’s hottest neighborhoods. You might hear East Harlem referred to as Spanish Harlem or El Barrio, but no matter what you call this trendy neighborhood, it’s an ideal location that’s still affordable by Manhattan standards.
East Harlem is located on Manhattan’s Upper East Side, extending from 96th Street north to the Harlem River, and from 5th Avenue east to the river. The northern section of Central Park, which includes the Museum of the City of New York, Fort Clinton, the Conservatory Garden, and the Butterfly Gardens of Central Park, sits directly across 5th Avenue from the neighborhood. Getting around Manhattan is quick and easy from East Harlem – the subway runs through East Harlem and contains several stations extending from 96th Street to 126th Street.

Property Ratings at 102-104 E 116th St
When I first moved to East Harlem, it's reputation preceded itself and I have to admit it was a little daunting. However, I have lived here now for almost 6 months and I can safely say I wouldn't want to live in any other neighborhood in New York. East Harlem is perfect because you get a taste of what New York really is beyond all the tourist attractions. Real New York is Harlem. The community feel here is incredible. Everyone greets each other and sits outside during the day playing music. Kids run up and down the sidewalk laughing and enjoying themselves. You also get a wide array of "hole in the wall" restraints and bars that are great for entertaining guests or just a night out alone - but without sacrificing your favorite chains. Within walking distance is a Popeye's, McDonald's, Buret King, Wendy's, and an Applebee's just to name a few. You are also walking distance from NYC's only Target which comes in handy when you first move in to any apartment. All that said, the building itself could use some work. I reside in a one bedroom with one roommate and to say it is cramped would be an understatement. The water is touchy switching from hot to cold suddenly. There are also a few bugs that always manage to get it. From where, I have yet to find out. It is a walk up so there is no elevator so just prepare for that journey at the end of a long day. However, each apartment is completely re - renovated each and every time someone new moves in and the super is one of the most genuine people you will ever meet. In conclusion - East Harlem is indeed the place to be, just not maybe 102 East 116th street exactly. :)
