Wedged between Balboa Park on the east side and San Diego Airport to the west, Bankers Hill is a terrific location for those who like to travel, those who like nature, and those who want to be close to the city center – Downtown San Diego is directly south of Bankers Hill. It is named for the wealthier residents who first populated the area, which developed during the 1800s. Many of the elegant Victorian mansions still dominate the neighborhood, although many have been converted into bed and breakfasts and office suites.
Today, Bankers Hill is best known for its restaurants, which line Fifth Avenue. Residents from all over San Diego head here to enjoy hotspots like Evolution, Cucina Urbana, Café Bassam, Barrio Star, Mister A’s, and Azuki Sushi. The Maple Canyon Trail is a more hidden gem in the neighborhood – residents know about it, but few others are aware of this terrific hiking path that extends one mile through the center of the neighborhood.

I used to live here in 2012
I used to live at this awesome property before the change of ownership. Bob and Jitka used to own the building. Bob was always around everyday improving the building. Bob also took care of any maintenance. Jitka would vacuum the halls every day. My apartment was small and no AC - so summers were super challenging. But I loved Bob and Jitka. and it was my first place living alone in San Diego, and I loved it. Hard to beat the location, too! The planes flying overhead definitely took some getting used to, but I got used to it. I have so many precious memories living here.

Charming Boutique Hotel
Hawthorne Historic Inn is an air bnb, studio apartment mix. The building itself is constantly over going modernization. I am currently living in a one bedroom suite with a kitchen, dining area, sitting area, and bedroom with one adjoining bathroom. Each room in the building is unique. Some have just rooms, some have kitchenettes, some have a full setup like the unit I'm in. Additionally, there is a common area with a kitchen and dining area in the basement and a laundry on site. As in the pictures there is a large patio area and a couple of wrap around porch areas. This location is very walking distance to Balboa park and very close to the airport. I was apprehensive about it being directly under a flight path, however, the noise from airplanes passing overhead is not very disruptive at all. Great owners and staff.

Only has a room available, no kitchen just a heads up. Very nice upfront guy though!
