The popular city of Westover is directly across the Monongahela River from Morgantown and West Virginia University. It is a fast-growing city that offers fantastic mountain views and a long history. The city was originally purchased in 1772 and later sold to Zackwell Morgan.
It is claimed that the name of Westover comes from its location across the river from Morgantown, an extremely difficult place to get to in the 1700s, because you had to cross "west over" the river. In 1807, ferry service was added, making the crossing easier; and in 1854, a suspension bridge was built over the river. Part of that original bridge, a stone tower, is still located on the bank.
While more residential than its college town neighbor, Westover offers a variety of shops and restaurants along Holland Avenue and Fairmont Road. Just outside of Westover off Fairmont Road, Morgantown Mall offers popular department stores, restaurants, and an AMC Theater.
