Chicago’s Near North Side has earned a reputation as one of the most desirable communities in the city for renters. Residents generally recognize the Near North Side as the area below North Avenue between Lake Michigan and the Chicago River. This large waterfront section of the city incorporates several smaller neighborhoods, including River North, Old Town, and Gold Coast. You’ll find the area’s most popular attractions along the famous Michigan Avenue (AKA “The Magnificent Mile”), a swanky shopping corridor that also incorporates high-end restaurants, trendy nightclubs, and performance venues.
So, what is it like to live in Near North Side? The magnificent Victorian architecture intermingles with the modern skyscrapers, creating a distinctive and timeless atmosphere. This section of the city is also home to a vast array of art galleries, displaying everything from the classical to the contemporary.

Property Ratings at 1036 N. Dearborn
Elevator out of service. The apartment is the worst literally you can here everything from the other apartment because of the pool walls they have, it’s like you live with them. Every time someone closes the door it will hit the wall so hard even you gonna feel like your wall moved because of how hard the doors close at this horrible building. The lobby + elevator smell so bad I have sent an email about it no one replied back. 2-3 out of washers don’t work since I moved here. Garbages always full sometime I have to leave the bag next to it because there is no place for it. They have a mailroom but the packages they never take them there. They’d just leave it in lobby! So you have something maybe expensive it’ll be in middle of the stinky lobby. Back elevator at least 150 years old with two doors! Yes two doors one of them like the zipper so if you have something in the hand or moving things in you have to use hands and feet just to get in. The next apartment and you are playing the same movie at the same time? You don’t have to turn the volume on you’ll hear it! Don’t worry! You have white clothes? Put them in the dryer they’ll come out blue!! Not kidding! The bathroom with no ventilator fan!! Taking hot shower? Leave the door opened or the window! First day I moved here the toilet was broken they did fix it so fast! By putting that white glue!! . I hope you can find a better place to call it home. You’ll get windows in the appartment but they’re so dirty from the outside, even you can’t see well because of the dirt!
It will be non-stop headaches if you choose to live here. From constant cockroach problems( despite being reported to management numerous times), to washing machines that are continually broken, rude and unhelpful staff, appliances that don’t work (you won’t be able to get anybody out to fix them either), missing packages, paper thin walls you can hear your neighbors at all times, this place is not worth it at all.
My boyfriend and I have been living in a BJB apartment for almost a year now and its been fabulous. We are very easy going individuals and in order for us to work in Chicago we took a 400sq foot apartment for 975/month in Gold Coast so that we could work our part time jobs and save money. BJB is amazing in that it has all utilities included except for electric. Its super convenient. It also has a little fitness center. The management here is very nice and replies to any questions or inquiry in a very timely manner. They also fix things quickly. The location is perfect; that's what we are basically paying for. Being near to the most hoping places! Shopping & food is what its about. The only downside would be that the apartment we are living is the lack/none of natural light, slow internet, and condensation on the heater in winter. The natural light is definitely something we need when looking for our new apartment this October (:
I just moved in a month ago, but my experience has been positive so far. When I first moved in, many of my appliances weren't working, but when I alerted management to the issue, they responded promptly and cheerfully. I was very pleased with their assistance and look forward to the rest of my stay there.
