Property Ratings at 10th Street Lofts
I rented a studio Apartment here before the pandemic and years after until mid 2023. Overall the Studio Apartment worked out really well. Spacious and felt like home. The large window is absolutely beautiful and location is very convenient to downtown. In addition, it’s a quieter stretch of downtown. Parking is not protected and will cost you extra. But overall for a downtown apartment, honestly was the best of both worlds of that balance you want out apartment life. Balanced meaning it’s downtown living and not the hassle of cumbersome parking, and fairly quiet. The drawback is that the quality of the property management has dropped during my stay. The old owners sold the properties to Altos and Altos cut their staff who managed the property recently. From 2019 through 2022, when staff was on site, things got taken care very quickly. 2023, right after the staff was cut, the management was not the same. So overall, great place to live. Take the management with a grain of salt as it’s now corporately owned, that cut their staff to save money, that in turn reduces the quality of service.
Historic 10th St. Loft living is amazing!! I am starting my 4th year and have no plans of making a change. We are now under new ownership that has mentioned some wonderful possibilities for this property making it an even "more" attractive reason to live at 10th St. Lofts. total excitement!! The loft styles allows you to decorate with your own design ideas and everything just works!! Mgmt. and maintenance are easy to work with and are always helpful. Working downtown is an easy walk/skywalk away; exciting dining options in immediate area; farmer's market several blocks away and bike trail connections and DART within close access. Being a pet friendly dwelling makes meeting new people easy. Come live at at 10th St. Lofts you'll be glad you did........I'd almost guarantee it!!
The location is amazing, walking distance to everything, but still feels like we're in our own cozy corner of downtown. The tenants all get along. The thick concrete walls keep my unit so quiet. Very safe and pet friendly. I've never seen a cleaner apartment building. The property manager Linda is so helpful too! Couldn't ask for a better place to call home.
I lived at 10th street lofts for 3 years and loved it. Great building with awesome management and exceptional maintenance. The location is great and the building is clean and the lofts have a very unique feel to them. It was a very easy and simple place to live. The structure of the apartments is great. Not to pricey and overall loved it. I would recommend 10th street lofts to anyone looking for a place to live in the downtown Des Moines area.
I lived at 10th Street Lofts for almost 3 years. Best renting experience I've ever had. Property management and maintenance really care about their tenants. Buildings and grounds are kept very clean. Great location downtown within walking distance to many things. Units are spacious and all very unique. I would recommend anyone wanting to move downtown to live here!
I regret living here for 2 years. They have some serious mold and water issues to address. The whole building is dusty. The owner is rude and doesn’t seem to be local. There are way better options in Des Moines.
Property Manager at 10th Street Lofts, Responded To This Review
Mallory, as you indicate, you lived at 10th Street Lofts for a period of approximately 2 years, ending about 2 years ago. Our historically designated buildings were completely gutted and converted to loft apartments in 2004 and opened in early 2005. We have large Low-E double pane windows. As you know, except for a minimal number of new sheet-rock walls, our interiors are open and constructed of concrete, brick, glass and metal. We have no carpeting, drapes or other soft materials. The “water” issues to which you refer was condensation. We have never had any “mold” outside what commonly exists in any/all living environments. How a tenant maintains their apartment greatly influences both. During the winter months some condensation may occur on the windows from activities within the unit which create humidity. For the most part, our tenants control the level of humidity, and thereby the condensation, by maintaining a constant temperature within their unit, running the bathroom exhaust during, and for several minutes after showering/bathing, and running a dehumidifier if necessary. In December of 2016, you made management aware of a condensation problem you were having with your windows. Upon visiting your unit the maintenance staff discovered, and you confirmed, that you shut off your furnace (heat) when you are not in the apartment. By doing so, on very cold days, you created a situation where any humidity in the apartment was immediately attracted to the cold windows thereby causing condensation. You then did not dry up the resulting water, leaving it to sit for we don’t know how long. As a consequence, you created somewhat of a mess. You can understand how this is troubling to our management. Rather than asking you to deal with the matter, our maintenance staff jumped in and cleaned it up. You were instructed how to avoid such issues in the future and I am unaware of any additional problems. You appeared to be grateful for our assistance at the time. We are always available to assist our tenants in dealing with these matters. You state that our building is dusty, I have to strongly disagree. We do not skimp on maintenance. Attending to our tenants and maintaining the property are our top priorities. We have 2 full time maintenance staff that clean and maintain our property continually. Our hallways and common spaces are cleaned and mopped at least 2 times a week. We are constantly complimented on our maintenance and believe our property is maintained to the highest standards. I apologize if you feel we have been rude. I/We strive to always remain understanding, patient, friendly and helpful despite the many issues faced daily. That is our mission. For your information, I was born and raised in southern Iowa and am a graduate of the University of Iowa. I do not live in Iowa now; however I communicate daily with our managers, maintenance staff and visit frequently. 10th Street Lofts – Ed Massman, Management
I've lived at 10th Street Lofts for a year and have had no complaints. The manager is friendly, attentive and great to communicate with; the maintenance staff is personable and quick to make repairs. I've never lived under management that knew me by name and took the time to get to know me. The best apartment living I've had and I will definitely recommend 10th Street Lofts to friends and family interested in living downtown Des Moines.
We have lived here about 3 years and have no complaints. We absolutely love the location-just a short walk to many great bars, restaraunts and other attractions. The management is very involved and committed to keeping the place in order and respectable. Also, maintenance is very timely and helpful.
Tenth Street Lofts is one of the best places to rent downtown. It is a short walk to Court Ave, the farmers market, and the sculptural park. The upside is its not too close where there is excessive traffic or noise. The building is kept clean and manager is attentive. Rent is reasonable, especially with the parking included. Would definitely recommend 10th Street Lofts to my friends.
