Located about a mile directly south of Downtown Rochester, South Wedge is one of the city’s oldest neighborhoods. South Wedge is home to two historic districts and was once home to several historical figures including Frederick Douglass and jazz legend Cab Calloway. Today, South Wedge is one of Rochester’s trendiest enclaves. South Wedge merges the old and new with condos in renovated school buildings, brownstone apartments, modern townhomes, and colorful Edwardian and Victorian houses. The unique mixture of rental options is complemented by South Wedge’s vibrant murals and other forms of art (the area has the most public art in the city outside of the Neighborhood of the Arts).
South Wedge is also known for its strong sense of community. South Wedge has two neighborhood newspapers and several neighborhood organizations that hold popular events every year like Third Thursday Concerts and Night of the Living Wedge, a costume contest and pub crawl.
