Located on the Pajarito Plateau, on the eastern edge of the Jemez Mountains, Los Alamos is a small mountain town with a rich history. In fact, Los Alamos is best known as the home of the Los Alamos National Laboratory, where a group of physicists constructed the world’s first atomic bomb during World War II.
Los Alamos’ history lives on at the Bradbury Science Museum, Los Alamos Historical Museum, and the Fuller Lodge Art Center. The Bandelier National Monument blends history and nature, boasting ancient ruins and relics as well as scenic hiking trails.
Los Alamos offers a wide variety of recreational opportunities, with close proximity to a host of parks, trails, and sports complexes in addition to the vast Valles Caldera National Preserve. Los Alamos is also convenient to skiing and snowboarding adventures at Pajarito Mountain.
Situated in northern New Mexico, Los Alamos is about a 45-minute drive from Santa Fe. Los Alamos is within 45 miles of eight Indian Pueblos as well.
