Somerville underwent a colossal transformation around the turn of the 21st century. A huge revitalization effort began in the 1990s, and by 2006 Somerville was recognized as the best-run city in Massachusetts. Nowadays, the city is better known for its thriving artistic community and constant self-improvement efforts by citizens and government alike.
There is heavy emphasis on local businesses, which are spread around Somerville in various commercial squares rather than a centralized downtown—this gives folks lots of options when selecting an apartment. Much of the arts and leisure activity is centered around Davis Square, well known for its dining, nightlife, and music venues.
The community is generally quite walkable, and MBTA service makes it exceptionally easy to get to nearby downtown Boston. With the campuses of Harvard, MIT, and Tufts surrounding the city, Somerville is within arm’s reach of some of America’s finest universities.

Property Ratings at 175 Beacon Street
Look, I get it. It's a new-ish (built in the 80s or 90s?) building in Somerville, which is a rarity. Unfortunately, management at this apartment complex are crooks. Maintenance at the apartment covers small items. Any big fixes they will avoid, even when rain is coming in through your window, soiling your carpet and your downstairs neighbors ceiling. The move out process could not be worse. They rent for the highest prices in the area, requiring DOZENS of visits from leasing agents, and prospective tenants taking tours. Most people who visit say, "nice...but not worth the price." We literally had dozens of people coming in our apartment. When I called to complain, the manager swore at me saying I had no right "to keep [him] from renting for as much as he could." When I said the number of visits were excessive his response was "Tough sh*t. This is what life is like as a renter." No it's not. It's only life when you're landlord is a greedy maniac, who drives a Maserati. After we moved out we find the landlord withheld $1300 from the security deposit as a charge for "leasing agents". Meaning he charged $1300 to hire a leasing agent to get the next tenant. This is absurd and illegal and we have hired a lawyer to dispute this amount. Tales of mis-management abound, from non-working appliances to laundry machines that don't work. Residents have an active facebook group where we discuss how badly we are treated, the lack of maintenance and are considering a class action lawsuit. This is a nice building, but in a few it will be destroyed as management cares only about extracting as much as it can from tenants.
