Property Ratings at 1840 Apartments
The building staff and maintenance are professional and awesome…. I have lived here 2 years and I don’t plan on leaving anytime soon… family oriented neighborhood… No the building isn’t perfect but it’s always clean and the main maintenance man has been working here for over 20 years….. All utilities are included except for internet and cable…..You won’t find a better apartment for the $$$$$ pests or CRIME have never been a problem for me while living here…
Building is dirty, smells awful and its always hot.
I really liked living here until it was the summer and my apartment was over taken by a colony of roaches. Management was made aware of the problem 8 months ago. We have had to completely move out of our kitchen at least five or six times since that time and yet we still see roaches. They come in and spray and then the roach problem gets worse. They do not supply us with new traps so we need to purchase them on our own and when we have made them aware of major concerns such as having roaches in our oven and dishwasher they don't really seem to care. There was also a leak in the apartment above us and even though we notified them of the damage that we saw they didn't do a lot to follow up and the week of us persisted for months resulting in mold. I really like the other tenants here and the staff is actually somewhat nice most of the time but it really seems that the management company does not care about their tenants. We had a parking pass stolen from our car resulting in our car being towed costing us almost $300 and when we inform the rental office of this issue all they could tell us what was that we owe them $75 for a replacement pass. They really don't seem to care about their tenants at all. The laundry room sorry and really poor repair. I do not recommend living here unless you want to deal with persistent problems and having to move out of the spaces that you pay for frequently in order to treat the apartment for the major pest infestation.
The noise level has gone up. There is a mouse problem that started back in 2017. You use to just see them when it got cold, and maintenance would come and put sticky pads and traps down. The mice ignored it. Also, there was the “period of roaches.” We had a tenant move in that brought roaches. Before that, we had no problems with roaches. Currently, you still see a roach now and then crawling under your front door or in the kitchen in the wee mornings. Maintenance is still good at responding in a reasonable time

This apartment works for us. There are no pest problems, at least not in our apartment -- have never seen any roaches, mice, nothing, and that's a big deal. The price is right and the community I think is nice. Lots of natural light, great walking trail behind the building. Maintenance is very responsive and easy to get things done. Cons: It is not luxury; hallways are ugly, units are just an OK size.

They only care about if you can pay or not. It is not as clean as before. The floors have been vacuumed once since taking over completely in August and that is because the inspectors were coming to check the fire alarms. Yes, there is a mouse and roach problem, and they have the upper hand now. It use to be if you see a roach, they would spray the connecting apartments. Now they spray one apartment, after you have complained, and run the roaches to the next apartment.

Was excellent two years ago and the old staff were actually working and problem solved. Now since 1840 took over, pest, mice are abundant. Locked out of your apartment? Call a lock smith they say. Parking is non- existent. If you don’t get a parking spot before 11pm forget about it. There’s people here parking multiple cars, one family here has 4 cars taking up spots. There was a reason the old crew kept each household to a minimum to park on the lot, to leave space for the residents. I have to park on the street where cars are broken into. Packages are sometimes left outside the door of the office and at night I would see opened packages in the stairwells. One couple in car approached me and asked about the apartments and I told them what I’m saying here. STAY AWAY.

I had to move here due to a bad situation in my last apartment. I've been living here since January 2018 and I absolutely love it. Any issues I've had (minor as they were) were handled quickly and without incident. The staff is friendly and helpful. The facilities are maintained and updated as needed. I can actually see myself staying here for a while. I have seen zero evidence of pests or have had any issues with any of the staff. The added benefit of having convenient laundry facilities, a complex pool, and a fitness center has made me so happy that I'm here. Just a note, I am writing this of my own free will and not being paid or given any incentives to write this review.
The apartment management came into my apartment without any notice. Then sent me an email that said sorry as if this email would do any justice. I feel really violated and I am really upset. If it is emergency case, I totally understand. But it was changing a filter that it changed last fall, so they could wait till tomorrow with the proper procedure. I am not sure how I can trust them from now on. DO NOT MOVE IN HERE.. NO PRIVACY !!!!!
I'm a college student on a budget. Suburban Hill is everything I could have ever wanted and more. My little studio is comfortable, the appliances and heating work great, it was in perfect condition when I moved in, and every time I needed a fix, the in-house maintenance service was quick to show up. It's a quiet apartment with little to no excessive noise from other tenants. Walls are a little thin but I never lose sleep over it. The people at the front desk are really nice, and there's always a space for my car in the parking lot, no matter how late it is. The area is quiet and there's plenty of lighting in the parking lot at night. I feel safe here and recommend it 100%.
Suburban Hill isn't fancy. It's an older building and the appliances are kind of cheap, but the units are kept in good condition and it does offer some amenities such as a pool and small gym. I've been here for around six months and I've had no problems with either the unit, other tenants or staff. The main draw for me was affordability and the overwhelmingly positive reviews I found online, and it's lived up to them.
The front desk staff are nice. A lot of the management lives on the property. If feels like they put more care into handling issues than any other apartment. They even hold events for those who live in the complex. Only issues are parking passes and office hours. But that's it! The services and amenities outweigh the 2 negatives!
Suburban Hill is a wonderful complex. It's affordable, safe and friendly. The tenants range from young intern, student types to families. People actually say hello to you and "have a good day," and they actually mean it. That's a very rare thing. The office staff really helped me acclimate to the complex. I have worked with Robert, Cindy and Charlie, and they have all been incredible Robert especially has gone above and beyond to help me out. I know some of the other reviewers complained about him, but I honestly have no idea why. He is no-nonsense, but he is extremely friendly and helpful! Sometimes, I just drop by to chat with him and Cindy. I currently live in a two-bedroom, but Robert helped me secure an efficiency in the building. I wanted to live alone, but I didn't want to have to leave. Personally, I preferred the 1-bedroom junior apartments, which is amazing, but it wasn't available. However, the studio is perfect for a young, single adult or couple, especially students or young professionals. It's also cheaper than the other places and has better reviews. The apartments themselves are amazing. The walls are white, and the floors are a beautiful hardwood. Since the building is older, the closets are also huge. There is a small gym in the basement, laundry on-site, a clean pool with an ever-present lifeguard and community parties. I really can't say enough about how great it is. If you are concerned about the neighborhood, I will admit it's not the safest place to walk alone at night. However, the complex is very safe, and I have never felt, as a young woman, unsafe there. Cameras also watch the entrances for suspicious activity. Overall, there is a reason I chose to stay with Suburban Hill. I tried going to other places, but I couldn't beat the square footage, the people, the closeness to 495 or the price. And I really did the research and went out and looked. This place is a steal.
Suburan is unfair when it comes for approval of an apartment The credit rating is too strict for hard working people who have good jobs and been working for a siginifant amount of years and also have been paying rent faithfully from previous landlords. Due to the unstable economy people couldnt afford to make payments on time to creditors Sububuran should reevaluate the process of credit approval for applicants applying for apartments.
Was greatly disappointed to view 2 apartments occupied by friends, coworkers. Dining area too small for normal table and china cabinet in 2BR unit. However price is high in competition with other apartment properties offering more space. Absence of balcony, and 1bath for 2BR units make Suburban Hill extremely undesirable. The building has not undergone much update since my Mother-in-Law lived there in the 80's other than cosmetic fixup. Plus an old rat-ty storage room has been renovated into a very tiny workout gym with limited equipment. Definitely NOT worth the price they are renting!
Property Manager at 1840 Apartments, Responded To This Review
I posted a review that as of now, hasn't gone live yet, but it's worth noting that the entire building is currently undergoing cosmetic changes. The old black and white tiles have been changed to a pretty sand-colored wood paneling, and the carpet changed to. There was some back and forth about what colors, but the ones they settled on are awesome. It will certainly update that old look it used to have.
