Curved along a bend in the Columbia River with Mount Hood National Forest to the south, The Dalles provides spectacular views of the mountains and the river. The Dalles is rich with history -- this was the town where the Oregon Trail ended. The Dalles incorporated in 1857, and today is the largest city in Wasco County and the county seat. The area is a major producer of sweet cherries, with more than 6,000 acres of the city containing cherry trees.
The Dalles' historic downtown is a truly inspiring place to shop or dine. With its historical Western architecture, brick-paved sidewalks, and mountain views, you'll want to spend the afternoon window-shopping. In August, you'll want to head downtown to enjoy the Wasco County Fair and Rodeo, an event held since 1885. Another great destination, the Fort Dalles Museum and Anderson Homestead, contains the former fort's Surgeon's Quarters, built in 1856. The museum first opened in 1905, making it one of the oldest museums in the state.
