Wedged between Balboa Park on the east side and San Diego Airport to the west, Bankers Hill is a terrific location for those who like to travel, those who like nature, and those who want to be close to the city center – Downtown San Diego is directly south of Bankers Hill. It is named for the wealthier residents who first populated the area, which developed during the 1800s. Many of the elegant Victorian mansions still dominate the neighborhood, although many have been converted into bed and breakfasts and office suites.
Today, Bankers Hill is best known for its restaurants, which line Fifth Avenue. Residents from all over San Diego head here to enjoy hotspots like Evolution, Cucina Urbana, Café Bassam, Barrio Star, Mister A’s, and Azuki Sushi. The Maple Canyon Trail is a more hidden gem in the neighborhood – residents know about it, but few others are aware of this terrific hiking path that extends one mile through the center of the neighborhood.

Close to everything good!
Love my new place. Neighbors are friendly and rent is low. Con: No Parking!

Bed bugs
Rent is good, but you'll come to find the building has bed bugs. The building manager won't tell you when you move in, instead he'll wait for you to complain so he can force treatments that don't work because it's not your unit that's infested. You'll lose sleep, sanity, your health, and thousands of dollars replacing destroyed and infested property, and then he'll scream, demean, and threaten to evict you for complaining because "other people don't mind the bed bugs" and it's "not a big deal" and "other tenants make much more money than you and don't complain". Also, be warned if you're disabled. Not only will he harass you, he won't disclose pesticide information and will attempt to force dangerous (and ineffective) chemical treatments the CDC confirms can be lethal to certain people, especially those suffering from asthma or seizures. When you decline the chemical treatment for medical reasons and request reasonable accommodations, he'll bang on your door for hours and serve you multiple notices to move out at once. Cons: Bed bugs, building manager, the elevator is seemingly always broken, you'll never find parking, they won't turn on the heat, not very safe area. Pros: Low rent, close to Balboa, close to public transportation and highway, decent views in some units.
