Property Ratings at 218 S Bassett St
I lived at this location for 2 years. It served its purpose. Pros: - At the time, it was cheap. Main reason I stayed 2 years. Sounds like rent has hiked significantly, though. - Management was very responsive and easy to work with. - Surprisingly quiet. Neighbors were respectful, rarely heard people above me/to the sides. - Great location Cons: - This place was not cleaned prior to my moving in, which was incredibly inconvenient. - This place is actively falling apart. On moving in, I had to fix the kitchen drawer and the garbage disposal myself. Toilet requires several flushes (even just for TP). Drywall on the ceiling was constantly falling down, leaving lots of "sand" like material all over the place. Paired with the gross carpeting, the vacuum cleaner got a major workout. - Our heat did not work. At all. Maintenance was aware of the issue but it wasn't fixed. That was not a huge issue being on an upper floor, but still got chilly in the winter! Ice actually built up on the windowsills a bit. - A/C worked, but was incredibly noisy, so be warned there. - We had no hot water about 50% of the time during the winter. I assume the boiler system couldn't handle both hot water and heat? - Garage is difficult to navigate and park in. Additionally, the grade of the driveway makes it difficult to exit the garage in the winter when there is ice. - Elevator feels like a horror movie. Tiny and very slow, also a million degrees in the summer. Door somewhat frequently gets stuck, which is spooky. - Hallways have no emergency lights. Power went out and without any windows the hallways were pitch black. Not super safe. - Not sure how often they clean hallways and things? Garbage scattered about, watched one receipt lay on the floor in a common space for months. Also, so many spiders/bugs in the hallways and stairwells - Apartment is not level so none of the cupboards would stay shut? Had to add velcro. - Paint peeling off bathroom walls made it difficult to clean. Had to sweep up paint flakes frequently.
Starting with some of the red flags I wish I would've seen when touring. - Extremely poor external sound proofing. Located by a very busy street, if you get a road-facing window, you will hear every car, passing pedestrian, and utility vehicle at all hours of the day. - No direct sunlight after 9AM - AC unit is very noisy when on. Fan by itself isn't too bad, but AC will be loud. - When the heater is turned on (out of your control, mind you) it will keep the room at a boiling temp. Seriously, upwards of 90F during the fall. Only way I lowered it was to stuff blankets underneath the radiator to stop air re-uptake. - Also when the heat is turned on, I subsequently lost hot water anywhere from 1-3 days a week. Called for maintenance, didn't do anything. Emailed the management company in October 2021 (as of writing December 2021) about it, no response since then. - Oven is tilted, one heating element is broken. Refrigerator squeaks but WD-40 seems to fix it. - Outlets were loose, opted to just replace them myself. I will mention some of the decent aspects. - Furniture and bathroom are in good condition. Decent enough storage space. - Parking is good price for underground. - The sound proofing between apartments is at least good. Rarely, if ever, hear neighbors. - Your checks will certainly be cashed on time. Suffice it to say, it has been a terrible living here. I really wouldn't be writing this review if I could at least have consistent hot water. If you're looking at this apartment, please consider elsewhere. The price is not worth it.
