The first settlers arrived around 1862. One of those settlers was a salt maker named William Galbraith. He knew of a salt company in Syracuse, New York, so he printed “Syracuse” on his salt bags. In 1887, another settler borrowed the name printed on the salt bags for his resort, the Syracuse Bathing Resort. Eventually, the city embraced the name. Syracuse remained a quiet farming community until the roadway was built to the state park. Today, it is a popular city with access to one of the state’s most beloved parks. Head to Antelope Island State Park to view the wildlife that includes bison, antelope, bighorn sheep, millions of birds, and more.
