With its wide-open spaces and endless sky, Hempstead embodies everything you'd want in a small Texas town. It even offers the Western-style downtown shopping area, filled with shops and restaurants. Hempstead's claim to fame is its watermelons. Until around 1940, it was the nation's biggest watermelon producer, and the town still holds a Watermelon Festival every July. The festival includes a car show, a parade, live music, BBQ cook-offs, and more. During December, the Festival of Lights includes vendors, a parade, live entertainment, and a tree-decorating contest.
