Nestled next to the renowned Compton Heights, the Gate is one of the city’s historic neighborhoods. The history of the Gate stretches back to the 1800s, but the Gate is best known as the birthplace of Maya Angelou and is where the Pulitzer prize-winning author and activist lived for part of her childhood. The Gate is also known for housing part of the Saint Louis University Hospital along with several campus buildings and the SLU Medical Center Stadium. This quaint neighborhood has affordable and mid-range rentals available for rent, including cozy apartments in brick buildings and chic renovated flats. Conveniently, the Gate is also convenient to some of the most popular neighborhoods in South City including Shaw, Lafayette Square, and Compton Heights. Residents frequently flock to the Compton Hill Reservoir Park to visit the historic water tower, Lafayette Park for summer concerts, and Shaw for some ice cream before strolling through Tower Grove Park, a sprawling green space.

Property Ratings at 3145 Lafayette Ave
I lived here for a year from 2023-2024 and it was overall a great experience! The apartment is a decent size with a walk in closet and large bedroom. The layout of the kitchen/living room is a little funky, but nothing some rearrangement of furniture can’t fix. I think the best part of these apartments were how all utilities were included (even wifi!) besides electric. It made paydays so much easier so that I didn’t have to worry about a bunch of different accounts. There are also very thick walls so I was never able to hear neighbors. The property manager, Kasey, is awesome and was always very attentive of my needs and replied within a timely manner if I ever needed anything. My electricity kept going out to the point where all the food in my fridge ended up spoiling and she sent an electrician that day and reimbursed me for groceries. She really cares about her tenants which is important. The only downside of this apartment was that there were a couple break ins in the parking lot. Luckily I don’t think the situation was too bad, but just inserting a gate at the entrance would fix it up !
The apartment overall is great! The living room/kitchen area are a bit small and lacking in storage space, but the apartment is nice. The landlord is great and quick to respond to issues. Everything is updated and new. Overall I have had a great experience here.
Don't rent apartments here, cars keep getting stolen and broken into and wrecked but managment does nothing to stop it.
