One of Detroit's popular inner-ring suburbs, Southfield delivers a distinctly urban atmosphere uncommon to communities of its size. The city holds a place as one of the most important commercial centers in Lower Michigan – the large Southfield Town Center business complex (also known as the “Golden Triangle”) serves as the daily workplace for thousands and hosts conferences year-round. The community is popular for folks who work in the local business sector, but with downtown Detroit just fifteen miles away, Southfield is a convenient option for commuters as well.
The city offers extensive facilities for both indoor and outdoor sports from golf to ice hockey, giving folks ample opportunities to stay active year-round. The city’s art scene largely revolves around Park West Gallery, a first-rate venue that houses a diverse selection of exhibits and frequently hosts art auctions as well.

Property Ratings at 42 West
Do yourself a favor and look elsewhere. The management is completely awful. I mean downright awful. The walls are so thin that you can hear full conversations happening. Packages get lost and or stolen all the time. Not to mention, I've talked to several other residents, former and current, who say they were either tricked into signing or just given a really bad deal overall. Look around and you will find things that are a lot more affordable for better quality and run by people who actually care. When I moved here, I spent a lot of nights crying over the bad decision I made. Thankfully, it's no longer an issue for me. Don't be fooled. It's not a nice place to live and the people behind it will absolutely leave you hanging. Not disgruntled or angry, I just want to warn people in the way I wish someone had warned me. Don't move here. Good luck.

This complex is branded is if its a luxury spot, but is anything, but. It's extremely overpriced for what you get and aesthetically, it leaves a ton to be desired. Parking is a disaster. There's limited space, then expensive garages are blocked by people who don't follow the rules, which aren't enforced. The walls are paper thin. You can hear phone calls, conversation, etc. from your neighbors unit. Trash is often left to pile up along the dumpsters. They will only be nice to you when you are going through the onboarding process. Once you make the mistake of signing on, you are given the cold shoulder and avoided. The package system is chaotic, and on top of that, there's a real problem when it comes to maintaining a sense of class or any kind of standard within the property community. You will be rushed into signing a lease and won't be able to think clearly, but I admonish you to do your research and find something else. The price for what you get, is nothing short of an insult.

I rented here because I liked the location and apartment unit, but I have found the people are the best part of living here. My neighbors are friendly and the staff is cheerful and helpful, going out of their way to make the place home. I highly recommend 42 West.

We recently moved out and thankfully we did. We hated every minute of living there. You can hear everything that goes on in the other apartments, and I mean everything. It's never quiet, between hearing doors slamming, cabinets slamming, pounding on walls, neighbors stomping around, people yelling in the hallways, kids screaming, late night parties, and everything else.... Living there was a total nightmare! The hallways are filthy dirty and constantly smell like smoke. Neighbors are always smoking cigarettes and pot, which blew right into our unit and filled our apartment with smoke. My husband and I were constantly getting dizzy and headaches from all the pot and cigarette smoke. They moved us into a unit with pretty much everything already broken. Management is the worst, they didn't even respond to complaints. Village Green doesn't care about their tenants at all. In fact, my husband called corporate multiple times and they never even responded. They couldn't keep an employee in the office for more than a few weeks it seemed, there are always new property managers coming and going. There was some super shady characters that were always driving driving through the parking lot, I didn't feel safe going outside by myself at night. And seriously, who builds a new building without an elevator, or at least a freight elevator? We had family in from out of town a few times who couldn't even visit, because they couldn't walk all the stairs. Way overpriced, severely mismanaged, loud, smoky, and not worth the money at all.

The management here is very friendly and the amenities are amazing! Apartment is very good looking as well. Unfortunately my roommate and I have to leave early due to a job relocation. Very disappointing because this place has ideal location to downtown Detroit, Royal Oak or other surrounding cities. LOVE the kitchen and tall ceilings, plus a heated garage for the Michigan winters, 10/10 would recommend.

If you are living in the Metro detroit area and looking for rentals, I highly recommend you checking out 42 W Apartments. For one, the complex is just one year shy of being perfectly new. The complex has a nice outdoor pool along with fitness center and locker rooms. The balconies are very nice, and location is perfect - just a few minutes from Birmingham and Royal Oak. The maintenance is always done promptly, and the management staff has always been understanding and kind. I am very happy with my stay at 42W and have recently renewed my lease, regardless of my eagerness to finally buy. It is just a very comfortable and young professional-friendly type of complex.

Village Green’s website states, “designed to create a new paradigm of luxury, 42 West blends sophistication, convenience, and world-class hospitality.” The only thing 42 West designed is a new paradigm of false advertising, because nothing could be further from the truth.... Upon moving in, I noticed a cracked hole in the bathtub. As if I wouldn't notice a quarter size, extremely sharp, jagged hole at the bottom of a steel bathtub? My brand new unit also came furnished with a broken hot water tank, water damage across the ceiling, and a very loud punching noise in the walls; due to the builder forgetting to screw down multiple valves on the roof. One day, it actually rained inside my apartment, because the builder also forgot to seal the windows. The balcony took over 3 months to complete and it was finished with a very thin piece of rotting wood that they just painted over. One morning, I went outside to find the windows on my car blown out and everything inside was stolen. My auto insurance went up $2,500 since moving in. Multiple cars in this community have been vandalized, broken into and stolen. No security whatsoever. The walls are paper thin, so you can hear everything that goes on in neighboring apartments. There is no closing mechanism on the big wooden doors, which most tenants let slam. The alarm box on the main entrance door has been broken for over a year, which makes a loud high pitched beeping noise constantly. The common hallways are absolutely filthy, they smell like nasty food, spider webs throughout, the walls are destroyed, the stairs are covered in sticky garbage juice, and the carpet is stained. For the past month and a half, my apartment has been infested with flies; they say it’s from a neighbor's apartment but nothing has been done to date. The community grounds are covered in cigarette butts and dog poop. The fitness room hasn’t been cleaned in over a year, the weights and treadmills are caked in dried sweat. The pool area is not locked, weekends are packed with young people who don’t even live in this community. Some neighbors are extremely loud and disrespectful, police have been here on a few occasions. Neighbors smoke pot and cigarettes constantly, which impedes neighboring units. They've been through at least 6 different property managers since I moved in. The most overpriced, volatile, stressful, uncomfortable living environment I’ve ever experienced in 20 years. Awful is an understatement!

I've been living here for over an year, and so far it's been great. All my visitors are impressed when they walk in to the apartment. It's in a central location with lots of restaurants and major stores nearby - many within a 10 minute walk. Everything in the complex is new, hence clean. The apartments are very spacious, and there's plenty of parking close to the entrance of each building. So far there has been nothing about the complex that would make me consider moving elsewhere. Any problems I've had were handled well by the management. The management organizes social events to meet our neighbors. Everyone I've met has been friendly, although many residents keep to themselves compared to other places I've lived. On the down side, the walls/ceilings don't block sound too well so I can sometimes hear my neighbors or people in the hallway. But in general my immediate neighbors are quiet and respectful with the exception of an occasional party now and then, which is reasonable. The paint on the walls isn't the best - even a slight touch leaves a mark. It's the same paint in the bathroom and kitchen, so even water marks are easily visible. They increased my rent this year with no room for negotiation, to the same level as any new resident. So basically there's no benefit for having lived here longer than anybody else. My rent increases with other apartment complexes in the past have been such that my rent remained lower than the rate for new residents. There's also no way to pay the rent online without a fee (I believe it's a $8 fee) - in 2017 this is crazy for an online transaction. Comcast has a monopoly with the internet service, so we have no choice with respect to quality/price. There are no trash-chutes, so we have to walk all around the complex to the dumpsters. The management has changed multiple times within the past year I've been here, which hasn't had any direct impact on me but it seems very odd. Overall, it's a nice, stress-free place to live with some minor inconveniences.

Hello, Sanchit, and thank you for sharing your experience with 42 West. We are absolutely thrilled to have you as a resident with us! We truly appreciate your kind compliments to our team and community, and we are so happy to know you have been enjoying your apartment home and all the wonderful amenities and conveniences our community offers. We do want to take this opportunity to thank you for sharing your concerns with us, and allowing our team to follow up with you personally to address and resolve these concerns. Per our previous chats, we have scheduled re-painting for your apartment home next week, and we are looking into moving one of the trash compactors closer to your building to help alleviate the trash issue. We do apologize for any inconvenience you may have experienced with rental payment processing. Our residents are more than welcome to bring their rent to us at the office, and if you have any questions regarding this, we would be more than happy to follow up with you. While we unfortunately cannot change the cable company availability, we do have a point of contact we work with directly at Comcast, and if you have any questions or concerns, we would be more than happy to put you in touch with that representative. We do acknowledge our team has evolved over the past year, and we are committed to providing the same quality of customer service, and we do appreciate the patience all of our residents have shown during our time of growth. Again, we thank you for sharing your feedback with us, and we will continue to follow up with you as matters are resolved. If there is anything we can do for you in the mean-time, or if you have any additional questions or concerns, please, do not hesitate to reach out to us. We are available at your convenience at ftwpropmgr@villagegreen.com or 248-215-0887. Thank you, Rachel E., Property Manager
This may have been the worst apartment complex I’ve lived at in my 10 years of renting apartments, and the first time I ever felt the need to leave a review. To start, I was the first resident to ever live in my unit. Upon moving in, the following items were ALREADY broken: -Air Conditioning -External door lock -Dishwasher -Two outlets -Closet door handles My dishwasher broke two more times within a year, my heat broke twice, and my bathroom faucets began to leak. In a brand new apartment. The walls are so thin you can hear absolutely everything in the complex. I had to file 4 different noise complaints and management didn’t believe me that I was experiencing any kind of noise issue and nothing was done about the situation. In fact, the manager tried to tell me no other unit had noise issues, when clearly reading through these reviews, many people had noise issues. Their “solution” was for ME to move to a more expensive unit within the complex… Also the place is not well kept at all. While everything looked nice when I first moved here, the flooring started peeling up right away and the cheap paint left marks on the walls and chipped constantly. The hallways constantly smell like cigarette smoke and there is dog poop all over the grass and sidewalks. Then, to top it off, our car was stolen right from the parking lot. There are no cameras that watch the parking lot, no security whatsoever, and management didn’t feel the need to let the other residents know that a vehicle had been stolen where they live. There are people who don’t live here constantly congregating in the parking lots and loitering all the time because they know there is no security here. The only thing nice about this apartment is the granite countertops. They splurged and got beautiful granite, but then skimped on literally everything else putting in extremely cheap appliances, fixtures, security, etc. So unless you want to live somewhere where your appliances will break, your neighbors will keep you up all night, and your security and safety will be compromised, I would strongly suggest looking elsewhere. There were more than 4 different managers in my one year of living here. And just in case you think I’m over-exaggerating, the management here agreed to break my lease early with no fees because even they agreed it was a horrible living situation. Cheap, dirty, and poorly managed. Don’t waste your time or money here.
