Bordering Washington Park to the East, Hyde Park is a popular and culturally diverse South Side community. Lush, spacious parks and the University of Chicago campus dominate the neighborhood. Although there is a wide selection of luxury communities, there are many apartments and rental houses that are surprisingly affordable, attracting students, faculty, staff, and any renters looking for a good deal.
This small park-like neighborhood is rich with history. Hyde Park is home to one of Chicago’s most famous landmarks: The Museum of Science and Industry, the largest science museum in the Western Hemisphere. Hyde Park was also home to the 1893 World’s Columbian Exposition, several Nobel Prize winners, and former President Barack Obama. The neighborhood is surrounded by beautiful green spaces, lush foliage, and lakefront parks with small beaches. Midway Plaisance Park is a long stretch of parkland with sports facilities and an outdoor skating rink.

Property Ratings at 5550 S Dorchester
The onsight staff are great. However public ammenities that need replaced with new products (like our treadmills which have been broken for 7 months and cannot turn on) are ignored. When paying for a building with ammenities you would expect they woild continue to be offered. The management company has not responded to any emails on the subject nor addressed the issue.
There’s are pests, weird smells in the hallways, plumbing neverrrrrrrrr works. People steal packages. I was on the phone with maintenance and they hung up on me about an issue that I’ve been having since the summer.
We have package theft all the time, but management doesn't care. Also, you can see roaches everywhere. The laundry connection is lost for 6 months. There's no one in management office even though the office hour is from 9 to 5. The only great thing here is maintenance team. But you will never be able to contact management team... I'm tired of this situation so ready to move out definitely.
Trust me my friend, if you ever chose to live in 5550, you would be in regret in the rest of your life. Theft, Burglaries, ... you tell me. Never ever rent to live in this place, unless you want endless suffering and insecurity. I even wonder if this place is cursed
Pros: - Good location with respect to UChicago (they seem to think this is enough to justify the high apartment prices) - Nice living next to other student peers Cons: - When I arrived, there were dead bugs on the floor of my apartment... - No package sorting at all, good luck finding your stuff in a pile of 14 floors worth of other peoples stuff - Employees enter your apartment without much notice - Laundry machine's credit card swiping has been broken the entire time I have lived here, and the normal laundry card machine has a 10% chance of accepting your $5+ bills only (get ready to spam swipe/insert bills just to clean your clothes) - Management doesn't respond to emails of criticism (0/4 so far) In summary, proximity to campus barely, barely outweighs all these negatives.
The location is extremely convenient, as it is equidistant from the Metra line, the UChicago campus, and the primary grocery stores (Kimbark and Hyde Park Plazas). The 55 bus to the green or red lines is only a block away, and there are a flurry of restaurants a block south on 57th. University students comprise a small portion of the total residents and the noise level is typically very low. The maintenance staff is friendly and quick to respond to any needs. The apartments themselves are some of the few in Hyde Park that are carpeted and since most other complexes are only three stories, any room on the fourth floor or above offers an excellent view of the surrounding neighborhood, as well as a glimpse of the downtown skyline. The kitchens are maintained nicely with an array of wall and base cabinets, and the stove is of a brand nicer than those in most other apartments. The laundry room is located in the basement, which can be accessed from the elevator. A garbage chute in the stairwell offers a nice convenience as you can avoid exiting the building to throw bags in a dumpster. The residents are all friendly pleasant.
