City Park is only five miles from the bustling and historic French Quarter District in New Orleans. Its namesake park is sprawling with grassy lawns, outdoor recreation, and cool NOLA attractions. The park area takes up almost the entire neighborhood and at approximately 1,300 acres, it’s larger than Central Park in NYC.
The park was founded in 1854 as a dueling destination, and holds the world’s largest collection of mature oak trees. Duels were often held between the two “Dueling Oaks” during that time – today, only one oak out of the two survived. Offerings at the park now include a dog run, gondola rides on Big Lake, kid-friendly museums and gardens, athletic facilities, and four unique cafes and restaurants.
Residents of Forest Park are not only in walking distance of the park, but also Delgado Community College, the Blue Oak BBQ restaurant, and Storyland, a whimsical outdoor children’s play area. Travel with ease through the city by streetcar or Interstate 610.
