Uptown is where renters choose to live if they love entertainment. Throughout the neighborhood you’ll find everything from walking tours highlighting the hangouts of Chicago gangsters to the city's hottest nightclubs and theaters to the best shops and restaurants around. Uptown Chicago stretches along Lake Michigan and includes the popular summer hotspot Montrose Beach. For those moving to Chicago with a pet, Montrose Dog Beach is also a very popular destination. In winter, Cricket Hill is one of the city's favorite sledding spots.
What is it like to live in Uptown? It’s historic, walkable, and distinctive. Uptown is home to some fantastic landmarks, such as Aragon Ballroom. The ballroom opened in 1926, and legends about secret tunnels and Al Capone abound. During the Big Band era, the ballroom hosted some of the biggest names in music, including Glenn Miller, Lawrence Welk, Guy Lombardo, Benny Goodman, and Duke Ellington.

Property Ratings at 930 W. Winona
Lived here for 2 years during medical school and I was very content. The management is excellent and very responsive - i always felt like i was respected and my concerns were heard and consistently responded to. Its an older building but overall well maintained and you can definitely tell the owners care about the quality of this property. The AC unit was not that effective and the top floor studio i was in was hot almost year-round, but in the winter it was okay. Parking was also kind of challenging because the 3 alleyways are all very narrow entrances and exits and getting in/out was sometimes a puzzle. The proximity to the nearby grocery store and Foster beach was really awesome. Overall i was very happy with my studio and how much i paid for it.
I moved here in 2019 and loved my studio. It was on the ground level and was right by the lobby, laundry room and parking garage. Super close to the beach, Andersonville and Edgewater. Bus Lines right out your door and a Mariano's directly across the street. Jim and Ethna the landlords are just fantastic. Very responsive to any requests you may have and always keep the common area's clean and tidy. It was hard to say goodbye to 930 Winona. It was such a warm and welcoming home my entire stay :)
My husband and I commited to an apartment for one year in the city to be near our daughter. This was the perfect place and it was so much fun to be here. The location was great for us: near the beach, Mariano's, bus lines, and all the shops and restaurants in Andersonville. The landlord and staff were responsive and friendly. The lobby was always kept clean and the laundry room was terrific. A great experience for us!
Great landlords! This was my first apartment in Chicago. We lived there for two years, and we moved out for personal reasons if not we would’ve stayed. We didn’t have a car, so the grocery store nearby and the 147 was super helpful. If I would do it all over again, I would move here again.
Old and squeaky apartment. The first week I stayed here, I was so scared that people walking in the above apartment are actually walking in my apartment. All the appliances are old, dusty exhaust that throws in a lot of dust into the bathroom, torn bug mesh, rusty cupboards, old fashioned crooked blinds. Its high time renovate
The landlords are wonderful and very friendly. The complex is well-maintained. Plenty of space in the one-bedroom so you don't feel like your neighbors are all on top of you. Plus, it's very close to the lake front and grocery store. Overall, I'd recommend it to anyone.
I have lived here for 4 years and have loved it. I'm moving for personal reasons, otherwise I would still be staying. Jim, Ethna, and Alberto all work really hard to keep this building clean, in working order, and well decorated seasonally. They are all very friendly, as were most of the neighbors. Any time I had maintenance issues, they were taken seriously and most often fixed within 1 day of submitting my request. Grocery stores and public transit very close by as well as easy access to Lake Shore Dr by car. Foster Beach is quarter mile away and a great neighborhood to walk in.
My husband and I lived at 930 W Winona Street for more than 10 years, and only moved when we purchased our condo. The Byrnes are the best Landlords on the North Side and they take care of this impeccable building and its tenants. The units are clean, spacious and quiet. We loved our one bedroom with its street-side view, renovated kitchen and spacious accommodation. Whenever we needed anything, The Byrnes took care of it quickly. Our neighbors are a diverse group of ages and backgrounds and we never had issues with noise or discontent. The location is also top-rate, within walking distance of Mariano’s, the Foster Beach and numerous restaurants. We loved living there!
Before moving to a distant state two months ago, I'd lived in the 930 W. Winona building for over 20 years. The building changed ownership two or three times during my first several years there. When Winona Management took over the building approximately 15 years ago , things really improved. The lobby and hallways were renovated and redecorated. I believe that many apartments were also renovated or updated when WM took over. Overall, the whole building just became a much more pleasant place to live. The building managers, Jim and Ethna, are just terrific. They are friendly, quick to respond, and reliable. The apartment itself was nice, but I really loved the location. The Red Line and several bus lines are short walks away. An entrance onto Lake Shore Drive is about a block away. One supermarket is a very short walk away, and another is just a few blocks further. On nice days, Wrigley Field is a long but pleasant walk. That block of Winona is a nice, quiet, residential street, but finding parking there is often difficult. If you'll have a car, you should look into leasing a parking space along with the apartment.
From reading the reviews it looks I am not the only returner :) I lived here for a short bit and then moved out of state and when I returned contacted Jim to see if there were any openings. I love living here. Jim/Ethna take care of the building, are personable, and respond back quickly to any issues. I have gotten to know all my neighbors and even cat sit for now one of my friends. The location is great. Close to 4 bus lines and the Red line. Marianos is only a 5 min walk and Whole Foods is not that far on bus. About a 10 min walk to the lakefront, beach, park and the building is situated on a tree lined street. Tons of yummy restaurants close by. Highly recommend.
I like this building and the landlords so much that I've lived here twice - before and after I moved to another state for a few years because of a job. I lived here for 5 years and when I had a chance to move back to Chicago, I was lucky to be able to get another unit here. The landlords keep the building and the apartments very well-maintained and they are really personable.
Old, squeaky, thin floors means lots of noise above your head at any given time of day. You will hear footsteps and you will hear voices. Beware.
I moved into the building in 2010.And handled the annual selling "fair" that we held. I liked my neighbors, and in fact I babysat for a neighbor's birds and it was educational, and fun. They recognized me! Jim works hard on the building. I parked my car on the lot under the building, and I was actually the person who handled the selling fair on the street. I made solid friends with the 20th Police District, too. There are a lot of neat buildings to look at. And, I like Mariano's. I moved in late 2016 to a seniors highrise...THAT was a mistake. I had numerous friends there at 930 Winona and I liked my apt. OK, enough, I guess AK
Out of my 8 years spent in the city, they have been my favorite management company by far. They're incredibly responsive to maintenance requests, very approachable in person, and respective of privacy. There was even this one time I lost my keys in the suburbs, emailed them, and had a replacement key waiting for me when I got back to the city that SAME DAY! Only reason I'm moving is because I really want a dog, and this building does not allow them, otherwise I'd renew!
Jim and Ethna are AWESOME landlords. I've never seen management of a large building care so much about the property, safety, and community guidelines. The owners know everyone's names and consistently enforce lease and building guidelines, such as noise levels and Covid-19 precautions. They are on site nearly every day, personally performing and supervising upkeep of the building and units. My unit has hardwood floors and is incredibly spacious for the price. The common areas are incredibly clean and tastefully decorated during holiday seasons. I'm so thankful to have found this apartment!
At 930 W. Winona I have had my best apartment experience and I would highly recommend this apartment building. The owners care deeply about their residents and go out of the way to make sure the building is well maintained and managed. I am able to easily reach the owners and if I ever have a question or need their assistance (which does not happen often) they respond very promptly. On snowy days the owners are at the property at all hours removing the snow and making sure our walkways and parking lot are safe and accessible. They even gave us a small Christmas card and treat around the holidays! The apartments themselves are well maintained and when I moved into my apartment the room was thoroughly cleaned and spotless! The common areas are cleaned daily by the owners and the building is very safe. The lake, train, grocery store, etc are all within walking distance making 930 W Winona a perfect Chicago location!
Location is excellent! Walking distance to the beach, Mariano's is close by. Trains and buses are just walks away. The landlord and landlady are very accommodating and extremely helpful. The main concern everyone will notice in this place is noise and the occasional smell of weed from other tenants apartment.
My wife and I just moved out after 3 years of living here, and we absolutely loved it. The rent is very reasonable, the landloard who owns the property and his team are very kind, prompt, and keep the building well-maintained and clean. He handled all of our maintenance concerns within 24 hrs of us contacting him throughout our 3 year stay. Street is also beautiful, with Mariano's grocery just 1 block away, as well as an express bus that runs directly downtown also only 1 block away. We met other happy tenants who had lived here for 9 years, and we certainly can see why. We would have continued living here if it wasn't our need to move for work! Loved this place and will miss it, highly recommended by my wife and I (physician and attorney).
I have been living here for 10 years and have never had any sort of complaint. The management company, a husband and wife, that run the building are great. They are always keeping the building in working order, lobby maintenance, weekly vacuuming in the hallways, regular quarterly pest control, any issues that need looked after are resolved as soon as possible, giving more then sufficient (and legal) notice to building issues (ie; water being turned off, elevator maintenance, entering apartments, etc), I could go on and on. I feel extremely fortunate to have lived in this building for so long. One downside to the building itself is that sound travels quite well among the units, if you are sensitive to the sounds of daily activities, proceed with caution. However I think the fact that the Winona Management Company, and everything else about the building fully makes up for that one blemish.
