It's where music, theater, bars, restaurants, and sports merge in Durham. The one-million-square-foot American Tobacco District is considered Durham's entertainment district, and it's all here -- restaurants, bars, the Durham Performing Arts Center, and the Durham Stadium, home of the Durham Bulls. The American Tobacco Historic District is listed on the National Register of Historic Places -- the tobacco factory was first built in 1874. Today, the district contains 14 historic buildings. It is a trendy community that features its own events, like concerts and art shows.
American Tobacco is located downtown, directly north of the Durham Freeway and extending north to Pettigrew Street. The walkable district contains a variety of loft apartments in historic warehouses, along with office space to create a vibrant live-work-play community. Some local hotspots in the neighborhood include the Bull Durham Beer Company, Saladelia Café, and Basan Bull City Sushi.

Property Ratings at American Tobacco Apartments (Old Bull/Noell)
Living in a historic landmark is impressive, but the benefits don't stop there! Location, view, and an amazing management team builds on this great location. But wait, there's more! The community here really stands out. The building tenants not only know each other, but like each other. I honestly enjoy bumping into neighbors in the elevator and catching up. TL;DR Stop looking. Move here.
While American Tobacco was one of the original "nice" apartments to live in downtown Durham, it comes with almost no amenities. There is no pool, there is no gym, there are no covered common areas. The management has recently lost sight of this (and the increased competition) and has implemented a series of policies that are no longer friendly to tenants. As a result, some of the long-time tenants are trying to terminate their leases to move to cheaper high-quality apartments with better amenities. Do yourself a favor and look elsewhere.
Property Manager at American Tobacco Apartments (Old Bull/Noell), Responded To This Review
We are sorry you feel this way and certainly value all our residents. We do have a full-service YMCA branch on property but not included in rent. Our policy for dog owners simply requires dogs on leash in the courtyard and only after repeated issues of dog owners not cleaning up after their dogs. We value the cleanliness of our property and this unfortunately has come at a cost of a bad review.
Want to live close to downtown? Feel like you’re in a big city? In one of Durham’s the oldest (it may be the oldest...) buildings? These apartments are amazing and uniquely Durham. All the h it’s are different with loft like open spaces, and there are units in the Noell Building with private rooftop terraces. Amazing place!
We moved here with the intention of building a house and this being a temporary stay. After a few months, we realized this is a really great place to call home! We've been here five years with no intention of leaving any time soon. We're down to one car; walk everywhere. Our home doesn't feel like an apartment - it feels like a home. High ceilings and brick walls are the highlights for us. Great resident events provide a way to meet neighbors. Needless to say anyone familiar with the American Tobacco Campus knows the property is meticulously cared for. Highly recommend.
We moved here last year and have had a really great experience. It is a beautiful apartment with new appliances, beautiful wood floors, and high ceilings. The location in downtown Durham is fantastic. It is very easy to be part of the action (only a couple minute walk to restaurants, bars, etc.) but the apartment itself is quiet and calm. We have only had one maintenance issue and it was addressed very promptly. It's a great place to live!
This place is the best! The space is beautiful and the apartments are great. It has been wonderful to live downtown and we have especially enjoyed our proximity to DPAC and the athletic park. The maintenance staff has been incredibly responsive and helpful and the management is terrific. For anyone interested in being downtown, I can't imagine a better place to live.
The apartment units themselves are very unique compared to most other places in the area. Great location, can walk to most places and near bus stops as well. Management is flexible and accommodating to individual situations which is a huge plus as resident. Highly recommend.
My Fiance and I have lived in Old Bull for about two years and have no immediate plans to leave. We knew we wanted to be downtown so we looked at all apartment options. Despite not having a pool or gym I have no regrets about our decision to live here. The location and history of the building are incredible and there is a great community feel Old Bull has that I don't believe would be easy to replicate at one of the larger apartments. We love it, our dog loves it, we all highly recommend.
I’ve been living at ATC since 2015 and have loved living here this entire time! It is the most stress-free place I’ve ever lived and that is invaluable :)
Amazing place to live. Historic building with charm, modern finishes and unbeatable location. Nowhere better in Downtown Durham.
