Located less than an hour from Baltimore, DC, and Gettysburg, Frederick sits between the Catoctin Mountains and the Monocacy River in Central Maryland. Frederick is Maryland’s second largest city and home of Fort Detrick, the town’s largest employer. With a prominent Civil War past and a spot on the I-270 tech corridor, Frederick blends history and technology for a uniquely modern experience.
A small town with convenience to major cities, Frederick offers something for everyone. History buffs rejoice in the National Museum of Civil War Medicine and proximity to Monocacy, Gettysburg, and Antietam National Battlefields. Art lovers savor public murals, private galleries, and Maryland Ensemble Theatre performances in addition to exhibits and classes at Delaplaine Arts Center. Outdoor enthusiasts relish the ample recreational opportunities at local parks such as Carroll Creek Park and Gambrill State Park.

Property Ratings at Apartments at Sunset
We have been living here since July 2021 now, and have had a great experience. If anything is ever needed Derek heads right over and fixes it. Josh in the lease office is always there as well if anything is ever needed too. Quiet and comfortable. Highly recommend, especially in an area with such high rent costs at other complexes.
I lived in the Apartments at Sunset from 2017 to 2019. My experience there was almost entirely positive. These are luxury apartments, so you will naturally pay more to live here. The perks are worth the cost if you ask me. Living on the bottom floor often comes with noise problems, but not here. Either my upstairs neighbor was unusually quiet, or these buildings are extremely well insulated for sound. This complex was lightening-fast at making repairs. My heater gave out one time in the dead of winter. After calling the office as soon as they opened, it was repaired and working within less than half an hour! Who could ask for better maintenance? The one significant complaint I have about this apartment complex is the way they nickel-and-dime their residents to death. They charge for every utility including trash pick-up. They require you to have renters' insurance. If you lose your key to the exercise room, they charge you an outrageous fee to replace it. Even if you are on a month-to-month lease, they require you to give a whopping SIXTY DAYS notice before moving out.

Horrible. Neighbors constantly smoked weed and management would just put letters on the door but never did any more to resolve the situation. We also had bed bugs in that apartment and have never had those before. Please reconsider where you are going to live if you are thinking about this place. It was a nightmare.
MY PERSONAL PROS: 24/7 gym access, kind/approachable management, relatively quiet, reasonable rent, location, extermination services (with the exception of moths), quick to make technical repairs. MY PERSONAL CONS: not allowed to view apartment before move-in day, cigarette burn holes in our carpet on move-in day, cigarette odor on move-in day, strong marijuana odor that would come and go (smoking neighbors), relatively slow reaction to a bedbug problem, failure to exterminate surrounding neighbors’ apartments after we experienced bedbugs, not non-smoking*, refusal to end our lease early even after persistent issue of marijuana odor. Your experience will likely be dependent upon the building that you are in. My friend lived there for around 8 years with few issues. You get what you pay for.
After living here for ~2.5 years, I can honestly say that this is a nice place to live. As for the apartments themselves, they are nice. I live in a remodeled one, so that might make a difference. I would recommend moving into one of these over a non-remodeled unit, as I believe the most of the older ones haven't been updated since the late 80s. Paint jobs are nice and I had new carpet installed in my unit, which was nice. I do live on the third floor, so it can get warm in the summer. However, the heating/cooling systems are really efficient and work well year-round, so you shouldn't encounter much of an issue with that. Some plugs can be a little loose and may not hold well, though maintenance has been more than willing to come by and fix the sockets in the past. All of the third floor apartments have vaulted ceilings, a nice addition you're free to install light fixtures/ceiling fans into a pre-wired socket. (I have a ceiling fan and it's great in the warm months). Closets and pantries are large and the inclusion of a washer/dryer in each unit is a huge plus. The decks/balconies are quite spacious and many offer nice views, so that's a plus. The grounds are nice for the most part. Buildings are well lit, more so on the side with the green roofs, but still nice either way. Grass/bushes are well maintained, though buildings on the green roofed side seem to be cleaner/in better condition, versus ones on 9th street with the yellow siding/grey roofs. Hopefully they will remodel the outsides of the 9th street end soon. Office staff and maintenance are very kind. used to be rude, though this all changed last year when the new staff joined. Bryan/the others are amazing and more than welcoming. They have helped me with any questions/issues you might have and seem as though they genuinely care for everyone who lives in the complex. Maintenance staff is generally fast and attentive. And please, remember that you're living in an apartment complex. You will hear your neighbors at times and there will be signs that you're not the only one living on the property. That's life, and no matter where you rent, that will occur. If you're not willing to settle on that, apartment life is probably not for you. One last suggestion: I'd walk through the different available units before you sign anything. That way, you can get a feel for each and decide what'd be best for you. (When doing so, factor in age/unit status/carpet and paint condition/the view).
Horrible experience! After we had moved out, the management office said they never received our payment and instead of contacting us they turned us into collections! When we contacted them about this(which no one would return any of my calls when I was calling from the number they had on file. Brian finally spoke to us once we used a different number) they said they never received the check and we would need to cancel the check and write a new one. I paid to have the check cancelled and the next day we went to take a new check and much to our surprise the check they said they "never received" had been cashed by them!! I have tried to contact Sunset to see how they all of a sudden found the check; however after calling 3 times and leaving my number with someone, no one has contacted me back. Absolutely the worst experience with an apartment complex ever!!
I have been living here since 2014 and I miss the previous office staff. They were so nice and responsivense. I always got a call back when to make sure everything was fixed or got an status update. I recently had an issue with my AC. I had to call the office 8 times. Each time I spoke to someone new. It was either Bryan, Rachel, or Heather. They had no clue what was going on and was no help to me at all. After 3 1/2 weeks of no AC, I decided to find someone from maintenance to find out when my AC will be fixed. It turned out that they didn't even know I had an issue. The new office team is horrible and I will not be renewing my lease.
I moved in here in mid May 2015 and enjoy the location immensely. When I was looking for an apartment to rent I looked at many areas to move to. When I came across the Apartments at Sunset on apt.com I was taken by the pictures of the complex and had to give it a look in person. The young lady (Judy) I met with was very friendly and made me feel at home from the first visit. Judy showed me around and told me that the maintenance personnel/office personnel both live on site for fast response in case of emergency. I have had a few incidences that I have had to to contact the office and they were very quick to respond to my needs. I am already thinking that I will be here for many years. All of the neighbors I have met have been nice and welcomed me to the area.
These apartments earn 4 out of 5 stars for me. These stars are for the central location, community commodities, pet friendliness and the 24 hour maintenance crew who are always prompt and fair. They don't get the 5th star from me because the apartments themselves are constructed with no care; my baseboards don't square up with each other at corners in the bathroom and as a result we have a mold problem. The hardware is cheap and the drywall and paint jobs were done hastily. It's pretty clean though, and they even have a huge dog park! It is also a short walk from downtown and Hood College. Altogether I enjoy living here and would recommend it.
Sunset is a pretty good place to start out, buildings are old and a bit dated but maintenance responds fast and friendly to any call! Only complaint would be the pool not being available when you would like and the door to the gym is often broken. Hood college students live here as well and can tend to be loud and lessen the professional setting.
