West Bde Maka Ska, once known as West Calhoun, is one of Minneapolis’ best neighborhoods. The neighborhood voted to change the name from West Calhoun to West Maka Ska in 2020. Between its natural beauty, family-friendly atmosphere, great schools, and excellent location, it’s not hard to see why so many renters are attracted to West Bde Maka Ska. The community is nestled along the western shore of Bde Maka Ska, the largest lake in Minneapolis. Anchored by Minikahda Club, a lush private golf course, West Maka Ska is south of Cedar Lake and Lake of the Isles and north of Lake Harriet. With easy access to four lakes and waterfront green space, West Maka Ska residents have plenty of opportunities for outdoor recreation. Go swimming at Thomas Beach, take a stroll along the Grand Rounds trail, or see a concert at the Lake Harriet Bandshell Park. Along with natural beauty, West Maka Ska has restaurants, grocers, and stores in the neighborhood.

Property Ratings at Axon Green
I never lived on this property, but I did apply in spring 2023. Our leasing agent was perfectly lovely, but know that there are some financial catches that come with applying. The application costs the usual $55 or so to submit. Then, before you even sign the lease, they take $150 from your card for "administrative fees" and the $300 security deposit. If you change your mind and decide not to sign the lease, as my friend and I did, you do NOT get any of that money back. This information is buried deep in the application agreement, so make sure you keep an eye out for it.

I had an amazing experience living at the Calhoun Greenway, where I lived for almost 5 years (spent at least a year in each of the three CG buildings: East, West and Be). Maintenance requests were dealt with quickly - via an online portal, so it was easy to submit them whenever - and communication with residents was great. Rent was a little high, but it is Minneapolis, after all! And as other reviewers have mentioned, buildings are definitely a little old, but renovations help them feel newer. Location was perfect-- very close to the lakes, Whole Foods/Chipotle/Noodles/Caribou/Wakame, and the 12 & 17 bus lines. I moved out because I needed a little more space at a little lower rent, but will miss it tremendously.
I was suckered in a year ago by its amazing location and the amenities that were shown to me during the tour. For the price, the amenities are actually pretty nice. The location is phenomenal and parking is easy enough to come by, even during the winter. The pool (indoor & outdoor) are nice and usually available. And the gym has just enough equipment. My negative experience has much to do with the age of the flooring in between floors in this apartment. It is an older complex that has been painted over time and time again to look nice. You can tell they have put significant effort into making this place appear nice, but I assure that it is all cosmetic. I suspect the flooring in between units is quite old, nailed down instead of screwed. Thus, EVERY TIME somebody so much as tip toes upstairs, you WILL hear an ear piercing creak. Go ahead and try ear plugs, loud fans, pillows over your head.... Nothing will dampen it enough. I have attempted to contact management on several occasions about the noise, and they are generally unresponsive, perhaps issuing a warning to my upstairs tenant. And what really can they do? It's not like they are going to tear the floor apart and make an upgrade like that, it is not even my upstairs tenants fault, they pay the same price I do and have the right to be a night owl. It is my fault that I did not test to see what the flooring would be like above my head. I HIGHLY RECOMMEND going upstairs and walking around, you will immediately notice how creaky the flooring is. The apartment itself is quite spacious for the price. Those white cabinets look so nice when you are doing a quick tour, but upon further inspection you can easily see that they are old cabinets that have just been painted, i'm surprised mine are still hanging on the wall. There is dust everywhere. If you have any sort of allergy, look out. No amount of vacuuming seems to remedy the allergies I have obtained since moving in. Also be wary of the air conditioning units on the walls. I do not know the last time mine was cleaned, but when I peered into the vents I was alarmed by the coating of black mold. I recommend cleaning that ASAP. All in all, if you love the location then maybe it is worth it to you. But I am now convinced more than ever, that I will have to sacrifice either location or price in order to get a good night sleep, remain allergy free, and have at least some resemblance of a peaceful living situation.

Thank you, Jordan E., The Calhoun Greenway
Calhoun Greenway is a nice residence for someone looking to be in near Uptown and enjoy the fun of Lake Calhoun. The apartment buildings are a little old (40-50 yrs or so), and they show some wear tear, but the apartments have been renovated so everything still feels new. Management is receptive to maintenance issues, but slow to react. The rent here is a little cheaper than similar places in the Calhoun area, so all in all the pros definitely outweigh the few cons.
I found this apartment on apartments.com before traveling out to Minnesota. The staff was very helpful and nice when I came for my tour and I immediately knew this was the place for me. You cannot beat the amenities or prices you have at this complex nor can you beat the location with a mix of city and suburban lifestyles. Great restaurants and shopping are literally across the street and uptown is a quick 3 minute drive. At the same time the greenway is tucked away to give that nice quite suburban feel. I highly recommend this complex!
