Property Ratings at Back Bay Tower
Poor Management. Property is poorly maintained. This is far from a luxury property.
I have lived in Back Bay Tower for 3 years, and appreciate all it has to offer. Located in downtown Portland, you are able to walk to nearby restaurants, movies, theaters, stores, all within a mile or less. It is a safe city with good public transportation. All bus lines are easily reached from Back Bay Towers. The building has a clean and new laundry facility, exercise room, pool, and terrace. Those who work at the building are friendly, helpful, and maintain a secure building with maintenance needs attend to rapidly.
My husband, I and our 2 cats lived in the Back Bay Tower for 3 yrs. It's a beautiful building and the staff takes security seriously. They lock all the doors, have security cameras and a security guard who knows his stuff. People move in and out, and the front doors need to be open occasionally, but it's a testament to how popular the Tower is. Portland is a generally safe city and Mainers are good people. There are some homeless shelters nearby, however, Portland has a homeless population because it has more homeless rights than most cities. That's a good thing! Portland cares about people and the Back Bay Tower cares about its residents. The Tower is 2 blocks away from Congress St and minutes from all the Portland attractions. Portland is a serious foodie city and you can walk to over 200 restaurants! We walked all over the city and never had problems with anyone. The Tower has a beautiful indoor pool and a 24 hr gym. There's a huge shared patio, with tables, grills and a ton of flower and herb planters. We grew catnip for our cats, basil for us and our neighbors planted flowers, tomatoes, peas, mint, chives and so much more. At times there are even patio yoga classes! The Tower has a 24 hr laundry room and hookups in each apt. The parking garage is a huge plus! On street parking is so difficult. Garage parking is a dream, especially in Portland. There aren't many rentals in the city that allow pets, and the Back Bay Tower is a sweet relief. Our pets were happy, healthy and safe in the Back Bay Tower. If you have to travel and need a pet sitter, there are residents that offer that service. Needs a grocery delivery or help with errands? There are residents that offer that too. Just look at the bulletin board in the foyer! The Back Bay Tower staff are amazing people. Most of them live in the building and want it to be as safe, clean and enjoyable as you do. The staff are friendly and trustworthy. If you don't believe me, ask the resident dogs. The staff know most of the resident pets by name and are known to have treats in their office. Every pet that we met in the Tower was very sweet. We never once encountered a dog that wasn't happy to greet us in the elevator. We always felt safe and whose day isn't improved by a happy dog or cat? Even though it's a pet friendly building, the staff do an excellent job of keeping the building very clean. We loved living at the Back Bay Tower and would definitely do it again if we moved back into the city. Thank you!
I've lived in many different apartment in Portland and none of them compare to the ease and comfort of Back Bay Tower. My previous apartments have been owned by property management companies around the city and landlords that live out of state. The companies have been buying up more properties to manage in the past few years, taking advantage of the influx of people looking to live in Portland. It was terribly slow getting a response anytime I needed anything fixed or had questions. The same was the case for the distant landlords. However at Back Bay Tower I've been promptly attended to by the ladies in the office and maintenance workers. I get to see them when I leave and come home from work every day and they always make time for concerns or just a friendly chat. There's even been instances when during off business hours they've been able to help. They are so friendly and make me feel at home. They've become like family.
If you are one of the unfortunate ones who get stuck in a lease at this place, good luck with that. Unprofessional and disorganized staff take care of issues slower than the ice caps are melting. Love seeing the front doors locked open as people move out, at alarming regular intervals, while the staff are no where to be found. Yeah, that's great security, especially one block from the homeless shelter. Get ready for high utility bills and "shared" water bills - cause you wanted to pay for your neighbors water use, right? As your lease nears its end, get ready for the laughable 30% rent increase. But hey, that's the price you pay for the "luxury" of rude and inept staff in an already falling apart high rise. Not to self: look up the new Portland definition of luxury since it isn't anything here.
Property Manager at Back Bay Tower, Responded To This Review
I am so sorry to hear of your experience living at Back Bay Tower. Our staff has been very short handed since one of our maintenance men was very seriously injured, but we have recently done some hiring and the building is back up and running smoothly! Thank you for your understanding during this time. We are very cautious of insuring we always have a staff member in close proximity while tenants are moving in/out. The building is monitored day and night by cameras as well as security at the desk in the front lobby overnight. As for the water billing, each unit is billed based on square footage, and number of occupancy in said unit. This is a system set up to be as fair as possible to each and every tenant - it is a common and legal way to distribute common area billing in the state of Maine. The current rent increases in this past year have placed our units at market value. After much market research and building renovations, the owners and asset managers have finally got each unit at market value. With the apartments now equal to others in the city of Portland, the rents will no longer be on the rise. I'm sorry for the way you feel about all of our recent changes as we are working hard to keep the building running smoothly and keep our tenants happy! -Back Bay Tower Management
Back Bay Towers is one of the tallest buildings in Portland with views of the Back Bay, Mt Washington, Portland and the Old Port there is something for everyone. Walking distance from downtown and all of its award winning restaurants, wine bars and night life you can't help but stay entertained. If sports is your passion, just think how many games you can see with all three of Portland's teams stadiums just a short walk away. Buy all the fresh veggies you want at the Farmers Market in Deering Park just across the street or if you would rather exercise your green thumb, there are areas on Back Bay Towers back terrace that you can try your luck at growing your own! Then grill them on the grills supplied by the management for tenant use. Back Bay Towers has 1,2 and 3 bedroom apartments most with screened in balconies and their own unique views. It also has an exercise room with all the equipment needed for a great workout, a heated pool and his and hers sauna for those sore and achy muscles. If travel is what you like Back Bay Towers is five minutes from both the train/bus terminal and the Portland Jet Port. If you would rather drive I-295 is a block away and from there it's a two hour drive to Boston or the mountains for some of the best skiing in New England. Oh by the way if you do have a car there is a two story garage under the terrace that along with the rest of the building is secure and being watched by cameras and on site security, the tenants safety is taken very seriously at Back Bay Towers. But who needs a car when your within walking distance of three major grocery stores including Trader Joe's and Whole Foods. The staff will bend over backwards to accommodate tenants. If there is a problem, all you have to do is stop by Amy's office let here know and the problem will be addressed in short order.
