Situated at the foothills of the Blue Ridge Mountains in Central Virginia, Charlottesville is a fiercely modern city with a reverence for the past. Two United States presidents called Charlottesville home, Thomas Jefferson and James Monroe. Thomas Jefferson designed Monticello and the University of Virginia, both of which are now UNESCO World Heritage Sites. Adjacent to Thomas Jefferson’s Monticello is James Monroe’s Ash Lawn-Highland, which is listed on the National Register of Historic Places.
Charlottesville also houses the largest collection of Aboriginal art outside of Australia, the Kluge-Ruhe Aboriginal Art Collection at the University of Virginia. The Jefferson Theater, the Paramount Theater, and a number of music venues in the downtown area host regular performances in Charlottesville, adding to the rich arts and cultural scene.

Property Ratings at Barracks West
I was told that two apartments meeting my budget and needs were becoming available this month, and I scheduled a tour of one of the available two bedrooms to get an idea of the property. When I showed up they were very dismissive, and told me that the apartments described weren't available until September, and I wasn't even given a tour. The woman didn't even introduce herself. She barely addressed me. Worst experience I've ever had with a leasing office.

don't live here! The place is infected with cockroaches, the neighbors are scandalous, you will see the patrols every day, people smoking marijuana in laundromats and children's parks, the worst place

worst place i have ever lived. bugs. ticks, mosquitoes, ants, roaches, and wasps. all in your house. maintenance issues never fixed. house is obviously in need of major repairs with a stain on the ceiling creeping along the longer we live here. management is a joke. don’t expect anything to get done for you. the farther you travel into the neighbourhood the worse it gets. trash absolutely everywhere. do not come here.
Awful apartments and worse management. Good luck getting anything repaired or replaced. Broken AC, not looked at for months. Caving in ceiling, called in March, didn't look at my apartment until I moved out in August. Complex is crime ridden. Neighbors and tenants throwing glass bottles out of car windows, parties every weekend, and drugs being sold in plain view. Do not move here. Look elsewhere.
I currently live here since last year and hate it! Management doesn’t respond in a timely matter, if they even respond, all the buildings are infested with roaches, pest control doesn’t come. Management doesn’t pay bills properly so the complex is run down and full of troublesome neighbors, no good parking spaces! My toilet leaked for 2 weeks before it got replaced, neighborhood trash wasn’t dumped for 2 weeks straight! Literally no changes have been made for years now as promised. I’ve asked for corporates contact to report issues and they never sent it. If you wanna break your lease you’re looking at w/e months you have left +2. Save your time/money before thinking of moving here please!!
Within the past 6 months there has been a significant change in the operations of the leasing office with an all new office staff. The environment of the office is more organized and professional, and it is evident that the new staff members are doing their best to clean up what was left behind. Unfortunately change does not happen over night, but I do see the changes slowly and surely coming along. Maintenance tends to be behind schedule recently, but according to the front office, this is due to a recent passing of one of their staff members; the loss put things behind schedule and they are working to keep up with the demands of an older and larger property while training new members of their team. As a resident here, I cannot debate some of the negative reviews that you can find online, but if I had to, I would argue that the majority of the negativity surrounding this neighborhood was due to the poor staffing/management that was in place. Again, I see changes happening and they all seem to be for the overall improvement and raised standard for the community.

You can't believe how bad the management is WITH dirty neighbors. Skipping through..... Its A very dirty place to live in. It should be called trash west instead of barracks west apartments.
Ok so I've been living here like 6 months and so much has gone wrong, or started off wrong. When we moved in, none of the light bulbs in the kitchen worked and when when we called maintenance to come and fix them, they made us pay the for the $45 replacement bulbs then we had to replace them. Also, one day I came home and the ceiling fan in the dining room fell right out of the ceiling. We've been requesting someone to come and fix it, but it's been almost three months and no one's come to fix it. They claim the electrician doesn't like cats, so if you happen to have cats, don't expect any electrical help anytime soon. There are very few electrical outlets and the floors are extremely uneven. The layout of the complex is pretty large, but there are several blind areas on the road where there is no way to see who or what is coming. I've almost been hit several times. Pet fees are ridiculous and as a college student, the initial is more than my monthly utilities and the monthly is more then I spend on food a week. So I have to buy cat food, litter, and now an additional 25. The walls in the apartments and in the buildings are very thin. I can often hear arguing or music from neighboring units and you can hear even more if you're just in the building's stairwell. I haven't had an issue with bugs, but it is very difficult to keep the apartment a single temperature. Perhaps it's the thin walls.
I love the apartment but it is to expensive that Im not even able to pay to school having some help with my rent will open many opportunists for me so i can go back to school with i really want to
People litter quite a bit, and drive slow because the kids in the neighborhood play football and ride their bikes in the road pretty often during the summer months. There's alot of electrical problems I'm starting to notice more and more of in my particular apartment as time goes by. Theres alot of random bugs that get in from who knows where with these cheap plain apartments, especially centipedes. One building found bats in the walls, which I believe is true because I've found bats in the grass around the perimeters of the complex before. The people are great and the pool is nice, and the kids have a great bus stop for school. However the rent is a little high for the amount of stress you deal with when anything goes wrong.. and trust me, something will go wrong.
I currently live here and they tried to tow my car the first few days we moved here. Also they switched the tenant parking passes and since we didn't know we almost got the cars towed again.
I recently gave them a termination letter as my lease would automatically terminate at the end of the term. There is a stipulation in the lease that a 6 week notice to vacate is necessary prior to termination of the lease; however, it does not stipulate that a termination fee of another months rent is necessary in the event that a 6 week notice is not given. Sooo.. after almost 5 years as a tenant (not to mention the amount of money that I have already given these people) they expect for me to give them another months rent because I am 4 days short of 6 weeks on my letter of intent to vacate as I had not made a definite decision to move prior to that. I have watched management/ownership change twice, entire staffs have been fired, the maintenance crew has completely changed, some the fired have been rehired, I have picked up trash behind some of the detesting neighbors who have absolutely no respect for the property and finally seen the play area that was promised over 4 years manifest itself. They have moved all of the old equipment from downstairs to upstairs and added a new treadmill to try to convince potential residents that they are truly offering an upgraded gym when in fact they have just created a new area for the old equipment. They have; in fact, completely remodeled the recreation room, but, the catch is that for a small fee of $125 or greater you will be allowed entry to the wonderful ambiance of the guest house. Other wise, it remains locked and there is no tenant access unless accompanied by a staff member during business hours. Only two guests per household may use the pool at one time, so inevitably, hardly any one uses the pool. So, don't invite your family over to swim.
The new management take this place to the fall. i hate this apartment because of the acts of the bad manager. everything is bad now, i am leaving.
