In many ways, Arlington’s Clarendon/Courthouse neighborhood leads a double life. On the one hand, the mix of upscale single-family homes and swanky apartments combined with the super-convenient access to Washington (just a mile away and served by multiple Metro stops) make this an ideal location for DC-area commuters seeking a more suburban home environment. The abundance of parks and playgrounds reflects the family-friendly nature of the community, and the local public schools are among the best in the region. Parts of the neighborhood also contain several corporate high-rises, giving many folks the option of walking to work.
However, Clarendon/Courthouse also has a lively, fun side. The neighborhood is generally known as the nightlife capital of Arlington – the robust bar and club scene along Clarendon Avenue attracts partiers from across the DC area on weekends.

Property Ratings at Barton House
Used to be a good value because utilities, parking, and even cable!! were included ... not anymore. Now you pay way more money in rent and get way less. The building doesn't have the same amenities as most other similarly priced buildings in the area. The units don't even have in-unit laundry or control over A/C and heat!!! That was fine when I wasn't paying utilities and paying a lower cost in rent... but not anymore. Also, stuff is broken a LOT... elevators, garage door, etc. I'd go with one of the more established or reputable companies in the area and avoid Akelius.

The Barton House used to be a great place to live. Akelius management has absolutely ruined it. They do not care about the building or residents and do not have the same regard for service that the previous company did. The concierge team and the maintenance teams continue to be WONDERFUL, but the corporate staff is absolutely terrible and incompetent. They are disrespectful and lazy. Do yourself a favor and look elsewhere! It's not what it used to be.

My husband and I have toured and lived at many buildings in the Rosslyn-Ballston coordinator. This is by far the best building we have lived in. We lived in the building for over four years, starting first in a larger studio. The price of the apartment is the best deal in Arlington for everything included- gym, utilities, underground parking spot, cable, front desk/package acceptance. The location cannot be beat, with easy access to the metro and guest parking in the above ground lot. The staff goes above and beyond for the tenants. While the units are older, they are very well maintained and we rarely had issues. When we moved in, we had brand new appliances and flooring. When something did need to be fixed, it was addressed very quickly, often same day or the next day. The front desk staff gets to know you and is always friendly. When the pandemic happened and we both needed to work from home, they found us a one bedroom to move into in the building and were flexible about the timing of us moving our furniture. After the initial one year lease, you are able to go month-to-month with no cost increase and rent increases are extremely minimal, with some years no increase in rent. While we left the building due to buying a place, we cannot recommend Barton House enough!
This building has the friendliest, most understanding, outstanding staff I have ever seen. The building is extremely clean, the apartments are spacious, and the amenities are some of the best I have seen in this area. Ruth, the owner of the building, can always be contacted and is always willing to help in any way she, or any of the other staff can. I will recommend this building to anyone I can, and all I can say is this is the best building in Arlington, VA.
Excellent staff, spacious apartments with balconies, great amenities. I highly recommend this place. It is walking distance to Clarendon and Courthouse, so you don’t need a car. The utilities are included and there is only a one time pet fee! The owner is excellent, overall a very great apartment. My only negatives are that it is a 10 minute walk to the metro and it’s a bit of an older building.
clean, efficient, outstanding staff and front desk personnel, lots of amenities, close to everything. nice ( quiet) neighbors, cannot say enough good things about TBH.
Have lived in this apartment for going on 4 years. I have lived in the sudio units and 1 bedroom units. The amount of space you get for the rent you pay is unbeatable in the Arlington area. With just a 0.5 mile walk to the metro, the location is ideal. And all utilities/parking are included in the rent. The staff is very helpful, especially the resident manager. There is a pool, fitness room (small but adequate), door clerk who signs for packages (they stay at the desk even late at night), and covered parking. Barton house has been the best experience for me, I'll be sad to leave when I do.
This is the perfect building for those who want a short walk to either Clarendon or Courthouse metro, but without the high cost. Rent prices include utilities and are extremely competitive for this area. The building and apartments are very well maintained, with the carpet, paint and appliances being replaced after each tenant moves out. The staff are incredibly friendly and helpful, and quick to sort out any maintenance issues that may arise. There is a small pool on the roof with a separate sun deck. The only down side to these apartments is the fact that the laundry rooms are on each floor, as opposed to having a washer/dryer in the actual apartments, but this can easily be overlooked when paying these prices
The Barton House is located between the Clarendon and Courthouse metro stations, just a 10 minute walk to each. Set just off of route 50, you have easy access to many locations! The building avoids the busy main streets of Clarendon, but is close enough to enjoy all that the area has to offer. The building is privately owned and run, giving it a very friendly feel. Employees are extremely helpful and laid back, leaving you feeling very comfortable in the building, and as though you are in the company of friends rather than a commercial company. The apartments themselves are very spacious with tons of storage space too! With all utilities included in the monthly rent, The Barton House is still cheaper than similar buildings in the area. The price and value for money really cannot be beat here. The residents really are quite varied - from young couples and families to the older generation. Everyone that lives within this building is very friendly and you will never hear loud music or anything else at unreasonable hours - the managers make it clear that this is not a building that welcomes that behaviour. After being recommended this building by friends in the area who previously lived here, myself and my husband could not be happier with our choice for our first home together! Initially looking to rent for a year or so, we now do not see ourselves moving for a very long time! I really cannot recommended this building enough
