Property Ratings at Bigelow Commons
The community looks very beautiful and the buildings have a nice charm to them, but that’s about the only thing that is nice about living in Bigelow Commons. Safety/security did not seem to be a priority for the complex. The exterior doors to the building that I lived in either had the locks jammed so you could not open them or the locks were broken and anyone could just come into the building. Packages were frequently stolen unless you were home at the time of delivery and immediately went on the hunt for it. It didn’t matter if it got delivered to the mail area of a building or to the “secure” package room, they would often get taken. The package room was even broken into a few days before Christmas this past year. Maintenance was also an issue. Each ticket that I put in took at least a week to get attention, including when wasps were coming inside my apartment. The walls between the units are also incredibly thin. You can hear absolutely everything that your neighbors are doing, it’s almost as if you are in the same room. The apartment I had also had only one small air vent in it, so I needed a dehumidifier and 2 large fans to make the air livable in the summer. The complex and the apartments are beautiful, but I do not recommend living there. Had I not moved in site unseen from out of state I would not have lived here.

We just moved in a week ago but so far so good! Maintenance and office staff are very responsive and have the tenants best interest at heart. Due to corona the pool is closed mon/tues and amenity times have shortened which kind of stinks but totally understandable in these unprecedented times. They are doing a great job and we are excited to continue living here in our cozy new home. Also the community is beautiful! And the pool is resort like. There is also an option to transfer your lease if your job moves and also heat and AC is included which is a game changer. Thanks bigelow!!

Bigelow is great! I have lived here for two years and sadly have to move due to getting a job in Maine. I have loved my time here. The leasing office is very helpful and gets back to you right away. Heat and AC included with is a game changer. If you work in the western mass or even central CT I highly recommend!

This place is awful! For the high amount of money I pay, I have had mice and issues with the hot water. Not to mention an awful smell and frigid coldness in the hallways. Along with the noisiness of neighbors who let their children run rampant in the hallways (they ride bikes, leave trash and shoes outside of their doors) and off leash dogs who poop everywhere.

I was introduced to this complex by my father who lived here back in 1993 and recommended I take a look at what they have to offer. Having lived there for four years let me just say that it was a complete joy for me. First, Shirley and the rest of the staff are the best. Always super friendly and personable. Second, the amenities are second to none. Though one could argue that it is a bit pricey, one mustn't forget what you're getting for that price. Also, it's in close proximity to just about everything in town, so if you had to walk to get groceries, you could do so. My apartment was a studio -- a very large studio. Space was never an issue. You're provided with storage space outside of your apartment as well. Anytime I had an issue, maintenance seemed to take care of it before it became a nuisance. Gym was just updated (with super nice equipment) and the indoor pool is always open and clean. I should state that the neighborhood adjacent to the complex isn't the greatest. I have run through the streets at night without ever having problems; however, running past needles and drug paraphernalia wasn't a rare occurrence. The good news is that Bigelow Commons does a great job of sequestering itself from the rest of the neighborhood, similar to how a resort does. I have never had my car robbed or vandalized nor have I gotten into a physical or verbal confrontation. In summary, Bigelow Commons is a solid complex. Before deeming it too expensive, calculate what your expenses would be elsewhere where you're paying for heat, air conditioning, gym, etc. If you find somewhere cheaper, it's probably too good to be true.

While the view of the Connecticut River is nice and the exposed brick is really cool, you should know a few things before renting here. I had two major ceiling leaks while here. The first took two full months to fix, while the second caused my entire living room floor to get soaked and remains unfixed. Their "emergency" maintenance took a full day to respond to my call. The staff allows themselves and maintenance to enter your apartment at any time without your permission. Once the staff learns you will be vacating, they pester you nonstop with attempts to show your apartment to other people. Again, they show the apartment without your permission. I once made the mistake of leaving my bedside lamp on and my windows open (although screened!) when I went out at night for a few hours. I came home to find the wall above my lamp completely covered in fruit flies. My windows have been securely closed ever since. Overall, do not live here if you value your security and privacy. The neighbors are mostly cool but everyone else I know has been moving out because, in the words of one resident, "this place has really gone downhill." Definitely not worth the extremely over-priced rent for continuous leaks, unresponsive maintenance, and unannounced visitors barging into your unit.

Thank you very much for sharing these comments, we agree that Bigelow has the best views and very stylish features. You're opinion of your experience is something we take seriously, though, we'd like to discuss some of the details. Please call myself or another associate in our office to speak at a time that is convenient to you. Thank you, Mindy 860.741.3501
I lived in Bigelow Commons for a year with my girlfriend. It is a great place with friendly staff and the rooms are a good size. The property is well maintained and spacious enough to have friends or family over to swim in the outdoor pool or use the grill. I am disappointed by many of the reviewers here as they are not being genuine to how good Bigelow Commons is and I am glad that I choose to stay here. The area is safe and nice, I have never had any or have seen any issue with anyone here and many times I and my girlfriend separately have walked outside in the early morning after work or drinks and have never felt unsafe. Bigelow has great security with locking doors and many great neighbors looking out as well. The maintenance staff are great answering emergencies in less than 12 hours like a clogged toilet. I was disappointed to hear one maintenance staff member cursing my girlfriends name while he unclogged the toilet not knowing she was in the apartment sick from work. All the other maintenance staff are great so I really would only put this as a small rare instance. The apartment is nicely furnished and you have everything you need, shower is HOOOOT and never runs out of heat (Free water too!!). Bigelow was a great experience. I know mnay people complain about the gym, but really they are being Diva's about it. The fact is its free which is a plus, you have weight room and cardio machines and a pool. It's not Planet Fitness, but cmon its free and you do have everything you need to workout.
At first we thought this complex was great, rent was not bad everything seemed great. However they have control when the AC gets turned off and the heat is turned on. If you live on the second, third, or fourth level you will have to deal with 100 degree heat for at least 3 weeks and the management will not do anything about it. Were extremely rude when notified about the conditions. Also there is no rent control. On average you rent will go up between 200 to 700$ depending of you re sign a month to month lease or 12 month. It is more than any apartment I've ever lived in. Also if you have a little dog you do no want to rent hear. There are very large dogs living hear and are very mean and Bigelow does nothing to regulate it. And I've seen a lot of issues with the large dogs going after smaller ones! So please re think Bigelow and rent somewhere else because you do no want to live here
Stayed in a two bedroom for one year, couldn't wait to leave. Poorly insulated we could hear everything above and below us. Neighbors had no consideration and staff did nothing to help.
