Established in 1942 by the United States Government, Oak Ridge was formed to be the site of the Manhattan Project—the secret World War II program that developed the atomic bomb—and the home base for the tens of thousands who worked on the project, along with their families. Oak Ridge, sometimes referred to as “The Secret City” and “The Atomic City,” became an independent city in 1959. Oak Ridge honors its past with the Manhattan Project National Historical Park, the American Museum of Science and Energy, and the annual Secret City Festival held each June.
Located in the foothills of the Smoky Mountains, Oak Ridge offers residents plenty of options for outdoor recreation. The 173-mile-long Melton Hill Lake is a popular destination for rowing, boating, and fishing. Oak Ridge’s 12 scenic greenways and 16 beautiful parks offer ample space for a broad range of land-based activities. Quick access to I-40, I-75, and the Oak Ridge Turnpike connects the city to nearby Knoxville and beyond.

Property Ratings at British Woods
When I moved to British Woods 2 years ago, I was downsizing from a house to an apartment. The washer/dryer hook-up was a big draw for me (no dragging your laundry back & forth). The 2/2 (surprisingly) has quite a bit of storage space - large bedroom closets, bathroom/linen closets, and several additional hall/coat closets. Love the fireplace. And the pool was definitely a deciding point for me...clean, accessible & well-maintained! Pets allowed, which is hard to find these days. The apartment complex is located within walking distance of a grocery store & gas station. With good schools nearby and sittting on the edge of a well-kept neighborhood, the apartment complex is clean & quiet. The management staff are always courteous, professional & quick to respond. After years of homeownership & the responsibilities that that entails, British Woods is stress-free living!
I am so happy I am living here at British Woods! I've been here only a short while, but it definitely feels like I have come home. I love my cozy apartment on this lovely, quiet property with real, established trees -- I love my covered deck -- I love that the staff strives to create a real sense of community here. The complex is conveniently situated in Oak Ridge -- close to everything -- and management has done so much to help make my move to this town-- a very frenzied time--go smoothly, which I deeply appreciate. I would recommend British Woods to anyone who wants to come home to a restful, peaceful place at the end of their day!
I have lived here for a little over 3 years, and my time here has been good, but management has not. They have improved, but there is still work needed!
Property Manager at British Woods, Responded To This Review
Thank you so much for taking the time to review your living experience at British Woods. The new management at British Woods has worked countless hours to make this the best place to call home in Oak Ridge. We have made so many improvements to the community; and the feedback has been amazing from most of the residents here. Please contact me so that we can set aside a time to meet as I want to know why you are unhappy with the new management here. Thank you and I look forward to hearing from you.
I have lived all over the country and this is the ONLY complex where the manager cares what's going on. I've lived here 6 years now and don't ever plan on leaving! The maintenance staff has had a lot of issues, but the manager will make sure your problem is taken care of. I'm so glad she enforces the rules - I don't have to worry about riff-raff moving in and ruining our wonderful community.
I really don’t know how anyone gets rented to at these apartments. The office manager says apartments are available but yet when you try to come in to attempt filing out an application for one to get one, she says you just missed the rental within hours and then says the next available apartment needed is unavailable for another long estimate of months that she comes up with. This happened to me twice within 8 months trying to get an apartment. I was supposed to be on a call list for the next available apartment and I didn’t even get a call. I had to call the office back once I saw it available online. I even had someone else call later in the day and the availability date for the same apartment was a different answer than what I was told. I will no longer call to try to rent from there and after reading the reviews it doesn’t seem that I’ll be missing much. Very disappointed.
Overbearing property manager always citing the lease. Makes living there like living in jail all the while promoting home this, this is your home that. Pool closed in hottest part of the summer. Crazy rule about speed limit on property, which mostly applies to folks not well favored. Which is everyone! Blatenly lies on residents citing lease violation and threats of eviction. Slow to fix maintenance issues on property. Buildings on property need to be pressure washed on the outside. The property is office is always closed but property manager is frequently seen out walking the dog or something else. Probably spying on residents in violation of the lease.
Property Manager at British Woods, Responded To This Review
When lease violations are an issue, I'd prefer that the resident know and understand what they're being cited for. We all have to live by the rules - regardless of where we are. The pool was open all but 1 day in the 2016 summer season. As for the speed limit - we've got a lot of children, families and dog walkers on property; I'd prefer all are safe at all times. We've got an AMAZING maintenance staff as of May 2016; so our maintenance issues have been addressed. The office is NOT always closed; however, it is closed due to sickness or doctors appointments. On those occasions, I am forced to walk my dog as I do not want her to potty in the house. I've tried to improve the property; it's a continual learning opportunity - each day teaches all of us new things.
Property Manager at British Woods, Responded To This Review
First, the reason the lease is referenced is because it’s a signed, legal document in which residents agree to adhere to specific policies. Second, the pool was open every day summer of 2016; save two days. Regarding the speed limit; every person entering property is expected to abide by the speed limit. However, our staff does not have enough time to run down each violator. The maintenance personnel issue has been resolved and the team we have now is extraordinary. The office is open 9-5 Monday – Friday; closed for lunch (corresponding to the availability of free time). The rare occasions in which the office is closed for an appointment or illness, the manager is at home or the appointment and has other people walking the dogs. It’s unfortunate that your view of the property is so jaded you insist on scaring its reputation.
