Famous for its ties to American history, Alexandria today remains a popular city — not just for tourists but also for those who work for the government. Located southwest of Washington, D.C., the west end Alexandria neighborhood of Landmark/Van Dorn has become a culturally diverse place for commuters to live.
Landmark/Van Dorn sits 5 miles due west of the downtown Alexandria waterfront, making a walk along the Potomac River only 15 minutes away. With the neighborhood outside of Old Towne, the close Metro line makes going downtown simple, yet residents can enjoy their local parks and restaurants without the influx of tourists.
Known for its luxury car dealerships, high-end rentals in Cameron Station, parks and diverse grocery stores, Van Dorn benefits from being a part of a community that, with over 900 acres of protected open space and a commitment to be biker and pedestrian friendly, makes Alexandria well worth the investment to live in.

Property Ratings at Broadstone Van Dorn
This building should be condemned. This is by far the worst apartment building I have ever stayed in my entire life. From the first month living here I’ve had major upstairs water leaks ruining my furniture, which has happened on multiple occasions during my year here. A ROACH, MICE AND RAT infestation that they refuse to do anything meaningful about… per pest control because they’re afraid the rats will die in the wall and leave a smell. If that wasn’t enough, they sell you on the unit having a washer and dryer but they been waiting on the equipment for over two years! So you have to go to the disgusting laundry room that they NEVER clean with clear mice holes and roaches everywhere just to PAY for laundry. In fact they recently raised the cost. I won’t even get started on the evil-hearted rental agents that have no customer service skills, who either do nothing to improve the lives of the tenants or actively make it worse. I will be filing complaints with both the city and state housing authorities.
Property Manager at Broadstone Van Dorn, Responded To This Review
We are sorry to hear about your negative experience. We take all concerns seriously and would like to address them as soon as possible. We apologize if there was any miscommunication with our pest control team. We also understand the frustration with the washer and dryer situation and are actively working to resolve it. We take pride in our customer service and will investigate any reports of unprofessional behavior from our rental agents. We encourage you to reach out to our management team to discuss your concerns further and find a solution.
Moved in two years ago, and about a month into living there they put washer and dryers into my unit. They were never hooked up and just took up space. I never had any problems with mice but there were a lot of roaches. The carpeting is stained in the hallways. Maintenance takes forever to get back to you. Wont fix most of the problems anyway. Management never responds and there are always some kind of meeting they are in. Packages get stolen, peoples cars get broken in to. It’s not a very safe community. Just moved out and I’m being charged $2k to have the floors replaced because one board was broken and the company they go through doesn’t have that flooring anymore. The parking lot has been worked on for awhile now and wasn’t fixed when I left. AC barely works, and they have this huge machine that takes up parking spaces to run the AC. You can find much better apartments for around the same price.
I would like to give you my experience here living at this apartment complex. I wanted to show you what you might expect living here and advise that you not renew your lease here. There more affordable and safer places to live elsewhere close by. Here is just a list of random problems I have noticed while living here: 0. My car was broken into and now it’s going to cost 3000$ to fix and replace the stollen parts. 1. The horrible roach and mouse infestation. 2. The leaky pipes that randomly flood the apartments. These must be replaced to turn these apartments into class A types. 3. The fact you falsely advertise that your units that have washing machines in them. Yet the building does not have the adequate power supply to power these units and never will. 4. The parking a lot is STILL NOT FINISHED being repainted and cracks in the lot filled. 5. The invasive contractors that will invade your apartment and disrupt everything in them. 6. The lack of response when trying to any service request. There is STILL a hole in my bathroom after putting in multiple maintenance requests. (They just fixed it when I sent them this letter.) 7. The Zero security policy when it comes to homeless people sleeping and hiding their robbed goods under the coaches. 8. Fees like 500$ to change to any apartment. Even if my lease has come to an end. 9. The fact that if you call the cops around here, they will not respond. 10. There is a pick-up in the amount of shooting outside hitting windows, package thieves, and drug attics roaming the halls at night. 11. The elevators are not certified, years out of a safety check, and I wouldn’t recommend using them. At your own risk. 12. Instantly loud cars drive by all hours of the day and night. Alarms, fire trucks, police sirens, and people yelling in the middle of the night. 13. Rent have gone up by 300$.
Im doing my 2nd review. And I needed some time. But I cant give this a good review. My apartment has been getting a uptick or roaches and the appliances arent even in yet. So I have huge space behind the walls with plenty of easy accessing points for these German Roaches. They dont die easy, not even close, I see about 4 on a low day and near 10 on some other days. I found one underneath the sheets and woke me up. Got sick for a week and missed work. Paid for another exterminator because the one that management got was too busy doing all the other units in the building. Im stressed I feel...
Happy to see the building has been undergoing improvements over the past year, but improvements are a minor benefit if the customer service isn't up to par. Your business is the customer, so when their requests for assistance are not dealt with in an efficient/effective manner, there is a problem in management and leadership.
Roaches. Mice. Trash overflowing weekly. Rude office staff and shady maintenance people
This place is a great fit for those seeking a great location, adjacent shopping, and various amenties.
The location, amenities, price, and overall value of Broadstone Van Dorn cannot be beat in the Alexandria area.
I would only recommend that people stay away from Broadstone as management is terrible and you always smell people smoking cigarettes and weed throughout the building. So glad I left that place.
Broadstone Van Dorn is the best apartment complex in the area when you compare location, price point, and overall value.
Wonderful place to live. Very clean if you are someone who values cleanliness and maintains that attitude. The maintenance team is professional and gets the job done immediately. The facilities are constantly being cleaned. The residents are kind. No major issues. I recommend this place to all my friends.
The service here is so friendly and Ive always had a response to any maintenance concerns within 24 hours. Very efficient staff!
Pleasant area that feels safe and close to businesses and food, convenient.
Weve been living in Broadstone for about 2 years now. Honestly all I can say is its a relief to come home everyday. The community here is great and the staff is even better. Weve never had any issues and anytime anything did happen they were always quick to address any and all concerns we had. I grew up in Alexandria and have struggled with many apartments in the past from terrible staffing to everything breaking down in a week. Im glad to say that has almost never been an issue here. With the renovations in the works I cant wait to see how much the quality of living will improve that much more. Im glad to call Broadstone home!
Broadstone’s incompetent management, noisy roads, and overpriced rent deter me from ever stepping foot in the building again. It’s a polished piece of crap; granite countertops and stainless steel appliances are not worth the terrible management, cheap floors, and rundown nature of everything in the building besides the lobby. Save your self some stress, and look elsewhere. Pros: granite counter tops, room size, large windows, prompt maintenance Cons: - extremely poor management and lack of communication within staff. my rims and tires were stolen from my car while parked on the property, not broadstone’s fault, but as an additive precaution, a staff member told me to park in one of the handicap spaces close to a camera, and since the property wasn’t towing, I would be fine. a couple months later, I get towed and broadstone does not see how they should be held responsible for the bill. - this may be dependent on the apt, but my cheap laminate floors would stick and pop while walking on them. - hallway smells like trash, the trash shoot must have poor ventilation, even with a mask on its disgusting - no staff ever in office. - flies make it inside closed windows.... constantly - about 2 months of the year temp wise will be unbearable. AC won’t turn on until about may or june and will be cut off around september, regardless of the temp outside. - cockroaches/bugs in lobby - road noise... any time of the day or night, loud obnoxious cars speeding by are super annoying. even on the top floor, windows shut, the noise is bad
Is the worst place ever i was in apartment 911 believe me i stayed 2 days and i left breaking the lease i killed over 50 roaches in one night they are infested of roaches i asked others peoples i believed was only my unit but no they even ha e mice too is terrible over 50 in one night they were all over my apartments kitchen bathroom bedroom i left my bed who coast me 1200$ because they went in is the most crazy experience i had.
This place used to be much nicer until Michelle moved in. She has created so many problems here, and she does not solve any of them. Any time you go into the office you can count on her scrolling through her phone, completely oblivious to the fact that the apartment complex is infested with roaches (many tenants also say mice, luckily my floor does not have any), and her "upgrades" just take money from dealing with real issues like getting an air conditioning system that works. This place seems too good to be true due to the low price, but you get what you pay for and this is no exception.
RUN AWAY UNLESS YOU WANT TO LIVE WITH ROACHES AND RATS. there are so many thing wrong with this apartment. I really regret my decision to move here and wish i have picked somewhere else to live. I live at 8th floor, and my apt has roaches problem ever since i move. Clearly the apt has major roaches and rats issue. I killed 3-4 roaches every day!!! And to make thing even worse, the management only said "it's normal to have increase activity of roaches after treatment", the treatment was done more than a week and they just keep saying the same thing. Seriously disgusting apartment. Listen to me and move somewhere else.
This place is infested with mice! I would not recommend living here. The apartment managers have no urgency to fix the issue and merely blame the rodent problem on being close to the woods. I've been living with mice for months and even when treated, I still hear mice in my apartment throughout the night. The apartment building is also very old and smells.
I currently rent a small studio apartment from Broadstone Van Dorn. I only been there for 9 months. It's gotten a lot better. They now have screens in the Windows so you can open it. The area is nice. I recommend it. I just prefer garden style instead of a building.
I love how they have a media room, silent library, and storage space for residents. Plus bills are included in the rent except the lights of course. Plus it's a nice high rise building that's not easily accessible after a certain hour
Management Staff/Maintenance: The biggest draw of this place is the staff. They are genuinely good people that treat you fairly. There were complications with my cable installation when I first moved, which prevented me from working from home. They refunded me some of the money, which was a good gesture. Additionally, their maintenance team is top notch. One of the employees even offered to help me install something on his day off. Facility: The grounds are okay. For the fact that it is a remodeled old hotel, they've done an okay job at modernizing the public spaces. It helps that it is usually quite clean, although there have been a few times I've seen dead bugs lying around which can be expected in the summer. (Dragon flies, not the hard to get rid of pests like the dreaded roach). They also have a great gym that is never crowded. The laundry room washers however leave much to be desired. Interiors: the apartments themselves are only okay. The walls are old and dated. Texturized like back in the 70s and 80s. The linoleum wooden floors are hard to keep clean. The kitchens are great as far as appliances go, but I don't think they cleaned well enough before they installed them. There's some kind of dirt or grime or some other gross nondescript thing along the wall and the side of the bottom oven drawer that I cannot get to which makes me cringe. Additionally the windows are old and quite awful. They didn't even have screens in at first. Rent: the major plus here is the rent. It's quite cheap for the location.
Broadstone is a very convenient complex in Alexandria and priced well. You are on 2 major bus routes to Metro and have easy access to 395. The staff is great and service requests are handled in good time.
