Property Ratings at Brookside
The plumbing is terrible and you are constantly told that it is because the building is old. Maintenance also chipped our overly re-enameled tub when they came to unclog the shower, too. We had issues where the air conditioners leaked and any time it rained there were puddles on the floor. Rain would seep down through the window sills and mold would grow. They cut down a bunch of trees and were doing "upgrades" to some apartments where they were actually installing venting grates in the basements (I use the term install lightly as it looks like they were placed in the holes that the plywood used to cover but multiple times you would see them falling out of the holes and on the ground...) They never installed grates or provided any ventilation in our unit...ever since then the humidity in our apartment was unbearable. I went through countless damp-rids, humidifiers, fans, etc and we had mold growing in the closets. There's no ventilation in the kitchen or the bathroom. If you like to cook, expect to have a thin layer of grease go over everything, no matter how much you clean...it's disgusting. We had ants that no matter how clean you were or how many traps you set would always just be present....even in the bathroom! It was insane. There are cracks in the walls that really look to be structural that are covered up repeatedly by spackle. After Ida, we noticed that our bedroom floor was starting to shift. We lived on the second floor. We put in a service request to let them know of the issue. No one came. The shift became about a 6 inch hump in our bedroom. My husband fell and hit his head pretty hard because of the hump. We called and sent in more requests and no one ever came until on Veteran's day, unscheduled, at 7:40am I answered constant banging and ringing of our doorbell. When COVID first came about and the state was shutting down, we received notices about how they expect rent paid in full and on time.no direction of resources. But that's nothing to how they treated the poor residents who were severely impacted by Ida. No communication, they failed to evacuate apartments when the gas and electrical boxes were compromised, they posted notices on people's doors that their belongings were going to be removed with very little care at all. We also had to be evacuated the day before Christmas Eve last year due to a gas leak and did not receive any credits towards rent

Roaches and ants. You will be battling even if your home is immaculate. Not enough parking especially in the winter time. There is no vent above the oven or fan in the bathroom which is odd because that causes mold.

My family and I have been here two years almost three.. If you think your moving to a quite nice apartment complex you are wrong. Lots go on especially on Mercer street; people wielding guns, drug dealers and murders living under families. And the icing of it all is they say you can transfer for safety and etc and tell you once thing of information but then slap you with a bill that is uncalled for! They don’t care about your safety or anything just money; so again if you want to move we’re crime and stuff doesn’t happen or you see cop cars constantly Brookside that the place. The other complaint is the condition some apartments are in when you move in for the price.. is terrible not worth the money they charge!! Also they are terrible at snow removal that we had to email the mayor of town in order to get dug out durning the huge snow storms; again think twice before moving in!

I've lived here for almost two years and have submitted over 18 maintenance requests, mostly for my own unit. The tub clogs every other month (facilities manager says I should just expect that to happen because of how old the plumbing is), I've had heavy leaks that have taken over a week to fix, and the laundry rooms are absolutely disgusting. We got a couple inches of snow yesterday and it was over before 5pm. Today I walked out to my car and none of the walkways or the parking lot had been cleared or salted. There are also paths that the didn't bother shoveling at all. Even in the best weather conditions, walkways at brookside garden aren't much more than rubble and mud, even though before I moved in I was told they were being re-paved. If it weren't for the pandemic, I would've been gone by now.

Absolutely the worst place I've ever lived in. Bed Bugs, paint chipping, busted heaters, flooded lawns, terrible parking. It's the worst and I wouldn't recommend it to anyone.
I lived here for a year last year and was not happy with the experience. What I liked: The leasing office ladies were very nice and professional and responsive. The location is phenomenal, lots to do close by, lots of restaurants, you’re super close to the mall, everything you need is close by, post office shoprite, so many awesome shops are like a 4 minute drive. Some utilities covered. The winters were cozy here, it felt like a sauna all year round but it was really nice in the winter. What I didn’t like: Very old dilapidated kitchen and appliances. These places are not kept well or maintained properly. The stove tops are almost impossible to clean and their solution is to repaint it. Plumbing wasn’t great and it took a little while for water to drain from the sinks or bathtub. No attention to detail- everything was either repainted or refinished clearly in a rush because there would be hairs or dirt in the finished surfaces. My bathroom wall was not painted fresh when I moved in, which was noted during inspection. Once I was finally settled I asked them to come paint it and they refused. Bugs bugs bugs, centipedes silver fish spiders on a regular basis. You will definitely have to call pest control regularly. My apartment was across the street from the high school, so our parking lot would be jam packed every Friday/Saturday night during football season. And you would literally be boxed in by people attending the game, they do not care. Police were called several times, but to no avail, they acted like there was nothing that could be done. The most management does is have the school announce not to park there which accomplishes nothing. They also close off the street during games which makes coming and going a pain. The kids that drive to school used our parking lot all the time. Be prepared to squeeze your car onto the walkway to park on the grass. They kept most of my security deposit to paint the walls and wash the carpet. They said every tenant has to pay for that when they leave. I would not recommend living here to anyone. Maybe higher priced units or different locations are better but AVOID any unit near the high school, I.e. west orchard st. The only reason I moved in here was because I submitted an application to a few places, but this place required a deposit. During the tour they said you have 72 hours from the time you get the approval email to change your mind and receive your deposit back. I asked her TWICE to confirm this.

The rating is a lie DO NOT LIVE HERE. Water damage and mold on walls for a year. Ant infestation during Covid lockdown. Laundry facilities not operational. Spoke to maintenance about concerns nothing was done

horrific place. shut it down. save up your money and go somewhere else.
I have never not gotten most of my security deposit back from an apartment. Until I lived here. I take good care of where I live and never thought that I would have a problem despite all of the negative reviews of this place. They tried to charge me well over what I should owe. They also are extremely poor at responding to maintenance requests. I put in 3 for an issue that ultimately was never resolved. I moved out due to this issue.
They will cut all your deposits amount without any reason. They will take your deposit amount and renovate their old apartment. Don’t come here.
When I was looking for affordable one bedroom apartments in Somerville, the options were pretty limited but I chose Brookside since it was one of the few where I would have a private entrance. I was still a bit hesitant due to the bad reviews out there, but I'm glad that I did and I enjoyed my one-year stay very much. Every single staff member I interacted with was extremely helpful and friendly, from the leasing consultants to the maintenance people, and they all seemed really eager to improve my experience any way they could. Also, any time there was a maintenance issue - no matter the day or time - I just called and someone came almost immediately to fix it which was great and stress-free for me. I also really liked my apartment itself - it was a cute and sunny one-bedroom that was a great size for one person. My issues with the apartment really started and ended when I first moved in. When I did move in, there were a lot of issues that still needed to be addressed, such as lights out, no temperatures on the oven knobs, a broken railing and other problems, the biggest being that fleas were in the apartment which had to be exterminated. However, maintenance staff fixed these all for me ASAP and I had a great experience overall and would recommend Brookside to anyone interested in the area and on a budget.
This apartment complex has been nothing but AWFUL. It is not even worth staying here to save money because at the end of your lease I guarantee they will nickel and dime you until they take your entire security deposit for normal wear and tear...which for us meant literally tac holes that we spakled beforehand. honestly it's not worth the headaches or the poor responses from management. Also the pavement was so poorly done that my husband tripped outside and got really hurt froma pothole. The laundry stopped working halfway through our lease. I could go on for days...We regret every second of signing our lease and wish we never lived there.
I came to visit my cousin two weekends ago and got very lost in this community. My cousin was not answering her phone but knew her address. I stopped in to get directions at the kiosk station and was helped by a young lady Ray. She helped me navigate to my cousins apartment in time for her surprise party. Ray was very kind. 2 thumbs up for her!
These apartments are OLD, and EVERYTHING BREAKS, including the CEILING and CABINETS. Do yourself a favor and shell out more money for peace of mind. Several times throughout our stay the bathroom ceiling has literally fallen apart and dripped dirty water on us while we're brushing our teeth. Same goes while we were watching TV in our living room. Management doesn't care to do long-term fixes to anything and literally patches over holes. Like. Every. Other. Month. The neighbors above us are loud and smoke weed every other day, and yell for no reason. I've gotten my car dented several times in their third-world of a parking lot. DON'T DO IT
DO NOT LIVE HERE!! This place does not even deserve one star. I was there for one year and hated every second of it. The grounds are not well maintained, especially in the winter. They claim "upgraded appliances" but those upgrades occurred in 1980. The attached image is my bathroom 2 weeks after I moved in. I had 3 more leaks just like that while living there. The rent was increased twice and I couldn't do anything about it because the leases says they can do that. Parking is awful and for the entire year I lived there they did not fix a single pothole. Most potholes should be categorized as sinkholes at this point.
Noisy AC, thin walls, old construction and crocodiles in rental office. They charge you even if you step in their office (not literally but yea they charge you for everything and with big margin). No option for 0 which is even high for these apartments, -1 would be somewhat better. When leaving apartment forget your deposit and they will ask for more money and get new carpet. Within few miles I found better apartment 90$ less 5 times better than brookside apartments.
Only cons: - Worst leasing office. No courtesy for tenents. People in leasing office thinks they are bosses and just impose things on tenents. Rude at times.. Ashley who got promoted as manager is rude, obstinate to people.. Not sure how she became manager. Now all the members working in her team are following her footsteps. - For many new tenents who doesnt know about much of the flaws the moment they move in they are asked to provide positive feedback about them on 'apartment websites'. If you see some positive comments mentioning name of a person, dont be fooled by that. - Laundromat is perennially doesnt work. when you try by putting in quarters it goes into black hole though the machine is in working condition. Several feedback attempts to get it working goes to deaf ears - Gardening, maintenance work start early in the morning with no courtesy for people who are sleeping in the morning. The noise just wakes everyone early - The moment you say you want to vacate, be prepared to get bill for all possible charges from nowhere.. No questions entertained. Just imposed on you - MAJOR issue- in summer all possible insects creep into your house. Got twice centepede at my house. Again call to the leasing office went into deaf ears. The response i got was that its common in summer. Had to take care of myself by not putting leg on the floor often. You never know wat will bite you. - Too much rent for an old shady apartment. The rent only goes up. As mentioned they find a reason to charge you.. If you are thinking of moving in.. Please stay away...... Doesnt worth it.. There are many apts around which comes in the same price range..
If you want to be disappointed in the place you live, you've picked the right complex. I lived here with my fiancé for over 18 months and I was so lucky to get a new job that let us break our lease. When we moved in, the floors were totally warped because the they hadn't been sealed correctly and it hadn't been ventilated properly. Within 4 months of living there, we started to have issues with our shower. For the remainder of the time we lived there, maintenance was called once a month to fix it because they are incompetent and have no plumbing knowledge. Of course, they were never available during the weekend so we had to adjust our work schedules to be home when they could do the work. Despite saying that people weren't allowed in without notifying us, on five different occasions, I would randomly find a maintenance worker inside my residence. This didn't change until my third call to corporate because the on site office is staffed by people with no brain power. I can not suggest enough that you should look somewhere else when trying to find a new residence.
This Apartment is ok, But problem comes when it comes about security deposit. They will cut almost all of your security money without reason . Be aware if you are depositing security money. I lost my 90% amount .
I was definitely put off by some of the reviews I read about Brookside Gardens – but I went through with it and got an apartment with them. I have had no huge issues and my experience has been very positive overall. I’ve only had the occasionally hiccup that comes with renting, which was always taken care of. Anyway my experience: Leasing office: I have nothing but good things to say about the leasing office. From start to finish they have been very nice, reasonable, and accommodating. I got an apartment with the things I wanted and when it came to move out they have made everything so easy for me. Maintenance: I used maintenance a few time. They were prompt every time and usually had whatever request I’d put in done the next day. Living Space: I had a bright and sunny 1- bedroom second floor apartment. My only complaint is that I wish I splurged for a unit with a separate dining room to give me some more space. It was cute and charming. The kitchen could have been more updated—it was still cute and big enough to hold all my kitchen gadgets. The bathroom was in good shape and had a new cabinet and vanity. The bedroom was very spacious. Heating is free and is radiator heating –when the weather is funky (hot and cold temperature swings) the radiators turn on and off, but they do take a while to cool down. If it got hot in my apartment I opened a few windows and it cooled down pretty easily – especially because I got a good cross breeze with all the windows I had. I had a garden view and my apartment in general is very quiet. I had no issues with my living space, it was very nice for the price! Laundry: I never liked the laundry facilities here, so I always used the laundry down the street (spin city). Parking: I either parked on the street or in one of two lots directly across from my unit. I was never without a parking space. Location: Let’s face it – I chose this place to live because the apartments were nice, close to work, and close to restaurants and things to do! I’m going to miss it.
If I could give it a zero star I will. The building is very old and way too expensive. One most important thing to remember before you rent, and I believe it was mentioned in many reviews that they will deduct a lot of money from your security deposit after you move out!!! The amount is just not large enough for you to go to court with them but large enough to make you very annoyed!!! 200 dollar here and 200 dollars there, even though all seems to be good reasons, the number is always way to expensive to justify the so called "damage". I would not recommended it for anybody. There are plenty of apartment for rent in the area. Avoid this place as much as you can. Don't be fooled by their move-in deals, first month for free? It was all priced into your rent from the rest of your lease.
It's in terrible condition and I'm trying to move. Having a hard time finding another apt because of the prices out here.
The apartments are falling apart the walls are cracking nothing is painted correctly don't keep up with anything. yes the people in the leasing office are nice but that's the only good thing about this place
