Jacksonville’s close proximity to Camp Lejeune and Marine Corps Air Station New River makes it a popular area for military personnel and civilian D.O.D. employees to find off-base housing; as a result, the local culture is heavily focused on the military.
The city’s nightlife scene and shopping centers like the Jacksonville Mall are popular hangouts. The area surrounding Riverwalk Park is full of historic brick buildings and quaint storefronts, giving the area a sense of rustic charm – it’s the perfect place to find your new favorite coffee shop.
For weekend trips, folks in Jacksonville enjoy easy access to large nature preserves like Hofmann Forest and the beaches of Emerald Isle. With an exceptionally low cost of living, apartments and rental houses are available to fit any budget.

Property Ratings at Cardinal Village
My husband and I lived here for a little over 3 years while he was stationed at Camp Lejeune. We initially moved in thinking that we would find a home after the first year, but following Hurricane Florence we just decided to stay put. The Maintenance team is great, and often comes at 8am on the dot (often surprising me in my pjs!). Shelly and everyone else at the property is so kind, and I literally never had an issue with any of them. That being said, the apartments themselves are older. Many layers of peeling paint in the kitchen cabinets, the carpeting left a lot to be desired, and the rooms would get moldy with the humidity. I would say about 85% of my issues would have been solved had the cabinets been fixed up a bit and the carpet been replaced with tile, linoleum, or wood of some sort. But that's just me! If you want somewhere to live that is cost effective with large apartments and staff that cares, Cardinal Village is your spot. But if you're looking for upgrades and bells and whistles, you might be better served elsewhere.
The apartment itself is fine. Its old and there’s no in apartment amenities like a dishwasher but it’s fine. Management and maintenance are the worst. Actually trying to get anything fixed out here is like pulling teeth. My ceiling is caving in from water damage and has been doing so for almost a month. Two people have come out to look at it in that time but no one has actually done anything to fix the problem. And now there’s just tiny streams of water running down the wall. This apartment costs far too much for how complacent the management here is, as soon as I can find out who the owner is I’ll be talking with them directly about breaking the lease. Problems happen in any apartment, but at least most complexes have the decency to actually fix the problem instead of ignoring it and then blaming the tenant. If you are desperate then sure go ahead, however there are far better options out here.
Don’t sign a lease here. The deal on the rent is not worth the horrible management. They are lazy, and if you ever have a problem you’re better off solving it on your own. They come into your apartment without letting you know first too. If you’re looking to save some money I’d say pick another option. My house reeked like cigarettes when I moved in and was completely filthy and disgusting. RUN.
I love these apartments. The staff is extremly friendly and are willing to talk to you and listen to you if you have any problems with the unit you have. The environment is beautiful and vey peaceful. Maintenance is fast and friendly unlike other apartment complexes. I love this place and plan on staying here for a while :)
