As one of Richmond's oldest neighborhoods, Shockoe Valley dates back to 1737 and is listed on the National Register of Historic Places. Shockoe Valley contains several smaller neighborhoods, including Upper Shockoe Valley. Upper Shockoe Valley begins along East Broad Street, directly north of Shockoe Slip and Shockoe Bottom. It borders the MCV Campus Virginia Commonwealth University and I-95 on its east side, with North 18th Street to the west. The Virginia State Capitol is adjacent to the neighborhood, just south of Broad Street.
Being on the east side of Downtown Richmond, Upper Shockoe Valley apartments are often within walking distance of all things downtown, including the Richmond Coliseum, the Greater Richmond Convention Center, the Dominion Arts Center, and the National. Within the neighborhood, you'll find shops and restaurants along 18th Street, including Shockoe Valley Market and the popular Shockoe Valley Pizza & Bar.

Property Ratings at Cedar Broad
I have lived here for a while now, but since management changed, it has gone downhill. There is no communication. They also didn’t tell me they lost my unit key, so i don’t even think they did regular mai thence checks I. My apartment for a while like air filters and sprinklers. They didn’t say anything until I had to send 100 messages for them to respond. Also unfortunately the complex is very dirty. From dog pee in the stairwells and elevators all the time to half eaten burgers just randomly in the hallways. My unit also constantly smells like cigarettes. Not worth renewing my lease again.
Great property. I would absolutely recommend to anyone looking for a new home.

Hi Jewel. Welcome and thank you for your five-star rating! We look forward to living and working with you! -Jackie Rumsey, Community Director
I moved in October 2020 and I couldn't be happier. I have a great view of the park and trees. The location is perfect. Richmond Main Street Station (Amtrak) has access to free bus lines and many restaurants and bars within walking distance. VCU hospital and the state capital is within a 5-10 minute walk. There is a park across the street and an easy 7-minute walk to the canal. The apartment comes with free trash pickup, a weekly building cleaning crew, and a wonderful staff. Parking is the only issue for someone who is new to the building. There are limited spaces, but that's due to the number of spots. I do feel safe and there are cameras all around the building. The rooftop area is one of the best features compared to other apartments in the area.

Where’s the worst place you’ve ever lived? Because this one tops my list. They exploit the location appeal by making sure rent is absurdly high for the quality of the location that you live (is very close to the hospital so many of the medical staff and students choose it because of its close proximity). For just a few examples: They’re running an AirB&B on the first floor, allowing for no accountability in who comes in and out of the apartment complex. ALL THE TIME your packages will get stolen (or even more fun is the packages ripped open and the box left behind with the contents taken out) from the mail room - but don’t worry, they won’t care. They willingly on multiple occasions came into my apartment without 24 hour notice. Vomit in the elevators, drug dealing and fights on the first floor, people keying your door, people side swiping your car in the parking lot, MULTIPLE random people entering and stealing from your apartment (once even a cop trying to come into my apartment, who I caught on camera, still nothing the apartment felt they wanted to do about it). Let me tell you, after 4 years and over 72,000 dollars I’ve paid them, they still wouldn’t let my lease end 15 days earlier despite FOUR MONTHS HEADS UP and are trying to charge 700 dollars for the final 15 days despite me leaving the place over 3 weeks before the end of the lease. There’s no way I’m getting any of my security deposit or pet deposit back and I’m certain they’ll try to charge me more even with the WAY ahead vacating notice, so even with the thousands they’ve gotten from me, they will always be willing to charge more. In summary, this place is basically college dorm room with CONSTANT noise and partying and weed smell everywhere. So you want money to be thrown away, you’ve found the right place

When I walked into cedar broad apartments after touring around Shockoe Bottom I immediately felt comfortable in the building. Beyond my initial comfort I learned there is a police officer on call in the building in case we ever have concerns so that’s a huge additional plus for me. The apartments are modern, any maintenance requests are fixed by the next day, the gym is great for simple workouts, and the roof has one of the best views around of sunsets over the city. As a student I love having the conference room and free coffee/tea available to me to get my work done at home. The leasing staff is incredible, they all know my name and immediately address any questions or concerns I have. I have lived here a year now and have resigned for another and I have recommended the building to many friends. Yes, the walls are thin, but I haven’t been too bothered by that thus far.
