The community of Chatham (officially known as Chatham Borough) is an upscale suburb positioned fifteen miles west of Newark and about thirty miles from Manhattan. Primarily a residential community, the downtown district around the corner of Main and Passaic features a cluster of charming storefronts housing locally-owned shops, restaurants, and other small businesses in a walkable layout. Just east of town, the Mall at Short Hills is one of the region’s most popular shopping centers, with the Canoe Brook Country Club right next door.
Several large parks and nature preserves can be found both in town and nearby, including the spectacular South Mountain Reservation and Watching Reservation. The terrific local schools and low crime rate make the borough quite popular with folks raising families, and the easy access to NJ Transit rail service as well as the Expressway makes it a great option for commuters.

Property Ratings at Chatham Arms
Three years in this apartment complex and I truly love it here so much. The location is great, the town is safe, quaint, and walking distance to the train station/town is a big bonus. Amazing open floor plan, clean, upgraded... What you get here and don’t most other places is GREAT management. They treat you with the upmost respect, very responsive to any apartment related needs or complaints if any, the list goes on. Dog friendly to boot! Never loved an apartment more to be honest. We all look out for each other here!
I lived here for 2 years, and NEVER feel compelled to write reviews. But this building is unique/and perfect for those looking in the area. Location: It's like a 1 minute walk to the New York train and downtown Chatham. Also extremely close to Summit, the Mall at Short Hills. And easily accessible to Morristown and other useful areas. Architecture/Interiors: Not your standard garden style apartment. I think this was an old hotel, and the apartments have some beautiful details. High ceilings, big crown moldings. The team has also done a first rate job in updating the apartments to new condition. If you're into design, these are nicely chosen finishes, appliances, etc. And laid out smart. I'm an interior designer and thought the apartment was beautiful/wouldn't have changed a thing. Neighbors: Were all very pleasant when I was there. Respectful. Not a noisy building at all. I also believe the building has double insulated partitions between apartments for sound proofing. This is a real plus. Management: Extremely responsive and extremely nice people. Very accommodating and will get back to you right away... First class all the way. Best of luck in your search, but this is probably as good as it gets in the area.
Fast and easy leasing process with very hands-on owners/landlords. Onsite superintendent made the resolution of any issue timely and flexible with the occupant's schedule. Great location and great people make this the best rental location in Chatham.
This building is so awesome. I moved to the area from Michigan and didn't really know what to expect of NJ. Any time I need something with my apartment, management is extremely quick to respond (usually within the hour). Steve, the super, is always around cleaning and helping with things in the building. My AC unit was making a funny noise when I first moved in and Steve spent a few hours one day cleaning and tightening it to make it as good as new (which, the units are pretty much brand new). I have not met an unfriendly face in the building, or the whole town. Everyone is smiley and happy and eager to say hello. A very dog friendly building, my dog always got proper pets and smiles as we walked around town and in and out of the building. I would highly recommend anyone to live in Chatham, and especially in Chatham Arms. The best property I have ever lived in (and that's with 5 out of state moves in 4 years).
My wife and I are so sad to be leaving Chatham Arms. It was our first apartment together, where we called home when we got engaged and when we finally got married. Lots of really great memories there. Its a great location in walking distance to great restaurants and all downtown Chatham has to offer. Right near the train station for the commuters or for those just looking for a looking for a night out in the city. Such a safe neighborhood and an absolutely lovely community. We'll miss Jake and Steve who always made us feel welcome and were super responsive to any questions or requests that we had. Had to leave due to my job relocating, but will definitely miss our time at Chatham Arms!
I was lucky enough to move into Chatham Arms two years ago right after the new owners took control. The extent to which the building and community has developed in such a short time is astounding. Everyone has been incredibly friendly and helpful from the ownership to the super. The apartment was beautifully renovated with hard wood flooring, new appliances, and an excellent paint job. I've really enjoyed spending an afternoon in. The neighbors are friendly and quiet, everyone is helpful and very respectful. Consider renting here if you enjoy an easy walk to the train station, shops or restaurants. Conveniently located near Madison Area YMCA and The Mall at Short Hills.
We are sad to be saying goodbye to Chatham Arms, as our jobs are taking us elsewhere. The unit itself was extremely spacious, had beautiful hardwood floors, brand new appliances, and lots of closets/storage. The location is perfect, as you can walk to many different restaurants and shops on Main St. Commuting into the city everyday was a breeze, as you are a short walk away from the train station. The owners are amazing and truly care about maintaining the property and the residents' happiness. They even added in a fitness center which was super convenient. From scheduling the initial tour, to scheduling our move out, they were so helpful and easy to work with throughout. The live in super is one of the nicest people around. All of our neighbors were so friendly and welcoming, which made Chatham Arms a wonderful place to call home.
I lived here for a year with my boyfriend, and I can't say enough good things about this place! First, the place is totally renovated so everything is brand new. Not only does it look great inside, but we never had to worry about anything not working. Also, our apartment felt really spacious. We specifically loved having a big open kitchen to cook in, and a large living room space that we could host guests in. Second, you can't beat this location. Not only were we located right in downtown Chatham, but also I could walk to the train station in two 2 minutes and be on a direct ride to NYC. Finally, the landlords were very welcoming and took care of all of our needs in a very timely manner. Like I said, I can't say enough good things about this place, and was sad to have had to leave!
Chatham Arms is a place I called home for the last three years. I had a pick of great restaurants and the train station all within 5 minute walk from the Apartment. As close as it was to the train station, it was extremely quiet. My neighbors were great - they were always respectful of other tenants and willing to lend a helping hand. Owners and the Superintendent were extremely responsive which was important to me. Apartment complex was always clean and units I’ve visited were all renovated. I had to leave for personal reasons but will always be fond of my time at Chatham Arms!
Chatham Arms is located in the heart of downtown Chatham. Walking distance to the train station and many great restaurants, the apartment building is located in a safe neighborhood and has many great tenants. I've spent 7 years in the apartment complex and the recent management change has been great. The owners and management company are very professional and responsive. In addition, the building has a live-in superintendent who is kind, trustworthy, and very helpful! This truly is a great place to call home.
