Property Ratings at College Towne Apartments
This place is infested with cockroaches. Do not move here because 9/10 you will be living with cockroaches. This apartment complex has been infested for over a year and they dont make people aware. Will rent you and apartment then tell you they evict you for wanting out your lease. Do not move here it will be the worst mistake you ever made.
Property Manager at College Towne Apartments, Responded To This Review
Yikes! Are you sure you have the correct community? We're quite proud of the clean and welcoming environment we've established here over the years, hence our confusion. Please contact our leasing office soon so we can get to the bottom of this misunderstanding. Thank you, and be well.
This is by far the worst apartment complex you can find. Look up the news articles from people moving in summer of 2022. Do your research. You will hear every word your neighbors say through the walls, if something breaks it won’t get fixed, and you’ll get the run around from everyone in the office. Nobody is here to help you. They only care about collecting your money & will not hold up their end of the bargain. On top of that, the roads are completely ruined so hopefully you don’t pop a tire as you pull into your home. Trust me, avoid this place at all costs.
I lived in these apartments for one year and the security deposit is currently over one month past the "maximum time it will take to receive your deposit back." I have called many times and all that they can tell me is "I don't know what to tell you that is someone else job." Their office being extremely slow to get stuff done and respond was a common theme while living here.
Constant noise and screaming. Shootings. They refuse to do anything about the crime whatsoever. Management is rude
Management makes this place way worse than what it already is. People in the office are rude, they will charge you random late fees, close access to the amenities, and do administration changes without telling you. Do not live here. You’re better off living under a bridge.
This place was actually pretty okay when DTN was still in charge. Everything went bad when new management took over. Since re-signing my lease for 2020-21 in 2019, the following has happened: Two shootings, worst of which resulted in 5 people getting injured and 12 cars (mostly residents’) in the lot getting damaged by stray bullets. Zero acknowledgement of the issue by management, aside from an increased “security” presence for about 2 months around move-out/ move-in. Probably to make parents feel good. When I’ve called off hours security in the past, the person answering hadn’t even heard of this complex. Cool. There have been plenty of other times I’ve seen a large police presence outside of other buildings. Also exterior doors don’t lock, which was pretty scary to think about while the shootings were taking place. When management switched over they also changed online rent payment... right before rent was due and without telling anyone that they wouldn’t be able to pay online that month. This was also during lockdown last spring, so many people were gone and had to scramble to send a check. Of course I was still charged a late fee. These units are old and it shows. Kitchen renovation looks nice but upon closer inspection was clearly done on an budget and poorly at that. Gaps in the walls and holes where pipes come through let bugs into my unit (not roaches thank god). They’ve now made themselves at home under my refrigerator eating spilled dog food leftover from the previous tenant. Alerted maintenance of the issue. 2 weeks later pest control was let into my apartment to place traps. No notice that they would be coming. Woke up to bug traps in my kitchen and feeling creeped out that strangers were there, during a pandemic, without my knowledge. Now I’m nervous whenever I hear strange voices in the hall, worried it’s someone else about to enter my apartment without alerting me first. Since management switched, nobody comes around to clean common spaces anymore. I genuinely don’t think the hallways have been vacuumed since lockdown last spring. They’re disgusting. No wonder there’s a bug problem. Lastly the floor in my unit is sagging so bad that the sliding door leading to the balcony doesn’t close anymore and the lock on the door doesn’t even line up anymore. Security concern number 3 for anyone keeping track. Do yourself a favor and don’t bother with this place. The rent is too high to make any of this okay.
Management will hang up on you and refuses to work with you on anything. They refuse to up security, and still raise rent every year. Charged a late fee because they switched payment platforms without telling us. There’s been an empty unit for months because they can’t get people in here. They also write fake reviews of themselves. Do not live here. We’re leaving come July along with a ton of other people, management is entirely to blame, but they brought it on themselves.
This location used to be good, but is now rampant with serious crimes. There have been at least two shooting incidents, and countless instances of theft. Our own packages were stolen from outside the apartment door multiple times, and today our car rims were stolen! If there is a textbook example of a bad neighborhood, this is it. It's not a safe place to live, and the management couldn't care less. So much for their "increased security" on the premises.
This is an area of higher crime, shootings, consistent fights and break ins. Management knows about all of it and refuses to up the security here. They ignore any ideas on making it more safe and more secure. If you decide to live here, make sure you having nothing valuable because it could be stolen.
I had to deal with a massive german roach infestation. I sent in two different maintenance requests and didn't get an exterminator in until a month later and only after I went to the leasing office in person. Over the course of that month I spent over 50 dollars on roach poison, baits, and traps to try to curb the problem. Three sticky traps turned up over 70 roaches over the course of a week. They infested my kuerig 2.0, which I had just purchased last year, to the point that I was getting roach droppings and sometimes entire roaches in any cup of tea I made and causing me to become ill and miss work after I unknowingly drank it. I have had to throw out that keurig and buy a new machine, which I have not set up yet because we are still seeing roaches. The boric acid I purchased has cut down on the problem, but it also made our cat sick causing him to suffer from vomiting and diarrhea. Our pantry was completely unusable as it had several roach egg cases and they got into all the food we had stored in there, so I had to spray it with boric acid. This has made using the kitchen extremely difficult as we have lost nearly a third of our cabinet space. Additionally, the apartment below us has suffered 3 leaks from the pipes in ours, which led to DTN ripping out all of the sink and cabinets for three days, and ripping out the sink in our bathroom twice for a total of five days with one less bathroom. After an additional three weeks of back and forth management has decided that I will not be receiving any form of compensation for this. Needless to say, I am very unhappy with management. It sucks because otherwise I really like this place, but management doesn't care about the residents at all.
The most incompetent and unorganized office is at College Towne. I first applied to sublease in late April, with the intention of moving-in in May. The entire reason I agreed to take the sublease was because an employee told me that July would be a half payment because the lease was up halfway through the month. We'll get to that. After turning in all my paperwork, and not hearing anything for a week, I called. The clerk on the phone said they found my paperwork and put it on their boss' desk for approval. 4 more days pass. I call again. This time, the clerk lets me know that the woman who was handling my application has been let go and I have to resubmit everything and wait AGAIN. Finally I'm approved. It is now early May. I go in to sign the sublease with the friends I'm leasing from. They had a pet who would be moving with them, and the office assured us the pet fee would be removed. Come June, it still had not been and it took them over a week to remove it from the bill. Here's July. They are charging me for the full month, despite the fact my lease is up halfway through, and despite what THEIR employee told me. The office manager insist that the employee would never have told me that. I leave the office and call the friends I'm leasing from. They both agree that we were absolutely told that July would be half off. The disorganization, attitude, and poor communication of this office is harmful to the leasers.
The staff doesn't know what they're doing; each person provides a different answer. The managers are ignorant, unwilling to help and are condescending when you are trying to understand the random charges on your account. There is such a high turnover rate that the complex hires whomever is willing to take the job. The complex is not very safe. I have had multiple friends' cars get broken into and had property stolen at different locations in the complex. In addition to that, there was a man who violently had his head bashed in right outside of my building, leaving blood stains on the concrete sidewalk. Collegetowne did nothing for that. There are drive-by shootings and often robberies at the townehomes. They hire "security" but it's nothing more than a rent-a-cop who spends most of their time parked in a lot on their phone. For the money, you can live in a more desirable location like downtown East Lansing with upgraded appliances and updated living. There is hardly any light, my AC didn't work - I tried having maintenance come fix it for months - and it is not central. There was a constant loud banging coming from the pipes in my apartment that would wake me up in the middle of the night because it was so loud and aggressive, but Collegetowne never tried to fix it. They told me that I'll get used to it. There were ants in my apartment, everywhere. I did not leave food out nor keep a messy apartment, so I had them sprayed. It was spot sprayed so the ants didn't go away. I know people in other buildings who had roaches. Maintenance will come inside your apartment whenever they feel, without a 24-hour notice. As a woman living by herself, this is scary and uncomfortable. DO not come near this hellish, waste-of-money space. Their staff is so uneducated, unknowledgeable, and unhelpful that it's like talking to a brick wall when you need something. It's because of them I had to hire a lawyer to get me back money they claimed to not have. This is the worst place I have ever lived, I wouldn't recommend it to anyone. The reviews are all quite similar, do your research on multiple websites. I should've listened.
They will hit you with unexpected fees, maintenance takes weeks to show up and they do not fully fix the problem, and the staff in their office has a terrible attitude and gives fake answers to get rid of you. The actual apartment is nice. However, The college towne leasing office employees are incredibly stupid and do not care about their residents. They are truly rude and that seems to be consistent with every employee I have spoken with. If you live at college towne, just hope that everything goes perfectly, because if not, you will have to deal with either a jerk or someone who says “like I don’t know actually, That’s just how it is”.
I was living in a 4 bedroom apartments from March--July 2017, so less than 5 months total. I moved into an apartment that was already occupied with 3 other roommates. The bedrooms in this style are very small. Consider living in a room where 80% of the room is filled with the bed and drawer. There is only a walkway left to get to the bed. After I moved out from this apartment, I received a charge for carpet replacement. The thing is the carpet was already a few years old. The carpet area where you walk to your bed got worn out after years, and they had to replace it anyway. But their policy is to find a way to charge you for the carpet, even though they had to replace it for the age of the carpet. So all four of us in the apartment got $70 charge for carpet replacement throughout the apartment, because it was stained. The law says that if carpet is stained, the landlord must first try to wash the stained area (free of charge), but if it did not work, then they can bring professional cleaner to remove the stains and charge the tenants. However, they just replaced the carpet and used the stain to charge the tenants.
This is absolutely the worst place I have ever lived, and I have lived in many apartment complexes in 4 states and 2 countries. My apartment is full of roaches and other bugs that laid eggs and reproduced inside my keurig, get inside all of my food, and are impossible to get rid of without professional extermination. We have had an Orkin rep come out 3 times, and the complex won't do anything more than a spot spray, so the bugs never leave. Additionally, the management has decided to rip up the carpets throughout the entire building and leave us living in a trash dump for 2 weeks. Whoever they hired left the carpet tacking down and uncovered, so for two weeks we had to help our dogs go up and down the stairs so that they would not stab their paws (there are also small children in this building that could have been easily injured). Today, in the middle of finals, they have decided to put carpeting back in the building. So, if you would like to live in a construction zone during exams, this is your place. Please, please don't move in here. Please do not lock yourself in to a lease with this company. Buildings 17 and 18 are full of roaches, there was recently a shooting, and the quality of life is dismal.
This apartment complex is great! There is a wonderful lounge area called "The Spot" with a place to play pool, watch your favorite tv shows, as well as catching up on studying! Or you can relax by the beautiful pool!
My room mates and I are students for the local university. We have a 4 bed 2 bath. When we first began living there we had a lot of issues with how our apartment was unkept during the previous renters stay. The leasing office kinda dragged their feet on fixing the issues and did just an ok job fixing it. The bus system is pretty slow to get around it only comes every 35 minutes which can be pretty inconvenient when you're trying to get to class or anywhere for that matter. The apartments are spacious and the appliances are decent nothing cool or exciting. Overall it's a decent living experience something I would only reccomend for students.
The people in the front office a are always friendly but not always as knowledgeable or on top of things as they should be. When we signed our lease we agreed to pay on the 1st of the actual month we're paying for instead of a month ahead like many DTN complexes were set up at the time. A month before we move in I get a call saying my rent is overdue and etc. It ended up being worked out, but only once I went into the office myself to dispute the issue. I didn't appreciate the extra and unnecessary stress. The pools and hot tubs are also not always as maintained as they should be. Many people complain about maintenance but I've never had any serious issues. It's not immediate service but I've never had an emergency where they needed to come fix something ASAP. I plan on staying away from DTN for my next year. I've had to talk to corporate for a friend who lived in the complex and DTN corporate is unsympathetic, unprofessional, and rude. I'm disappointed that I have given, and will be giving more money to (due to my current lease), such an awful company.
I live in the 3 bedroom 3 bathroom apartments. They're okay. The kitchen sink was much smaller than expected, you can't really fit pans to wash them. On CollegeTowne itself, I've had ups and downs. The maintenance for me has never been too slow, usually always within the same day. However, CollegeTowne finds reasons to come into your apartment literally ALL the time. 'Inspecting fire alarms', 'painting balconies', 'mortgage inspector', whatever else. In the winter, they've even gone in apartments to put boxes chocolate on your kitchen table! (Nice but invasion of privacy)
Not always in the best condition, they replace the carpets with every new lease. Lowest cost apartments in the area. The people at the leasing office are all great!
Our two bedroom 1 1/2 bath townhouse is something we needed terribly. We have an 11 month old son that is everywhere and we needed the space without breaking our bank. The college town staff was so welcoming to our little family, and also when things went wrong they were so helpful in fixing it without huff and puff.
My roommates and I moved here for the first time. We are very happy with the appearance and area of this place, with its proximity to MSU's campus as well. We recommend this place because of the quality and the price!
This is our first apartment I and my roommates have moved into and we are extremely happy! This is a great place and they have a very welcoming staff at the complex! We are all very excited for the up coming year!!
Driving up to the clubhouse, the scene is welcoming with precision landscaping and a feeling of "this is the place." Once inside, you are greeted by a young professional staff that are very welcoming and knowledgeable. They will explain all the amenities: pools, workout facility, ample parking, good security, pet friendly, close commute to campus, and a timely maintenance crew. After signing the dotted line, you will begin to experience the College Towne difference. The difference being the workout facility is usually crowded, almost no covered parking spots, a sizable pet tax, and poorly made units. The maintenance crew is friendly and you will get to know them well as the construction of the apartments is cheap and you will notice immediately. College Towne certainly is not king but it will allow you to keep a few crowns in your pocket.
