What began as a resort getaway for the Low Country elite in the 19th century has blossomed into a thriving community on the outer edge of the Charleston area. Countless buildings in town have been added to the National Register of Historic Places, so the local architecture definitely contributes to the charming atmosphere.
The town has experienced massive growth since the 1980s, meaning many of the apartments and homes are fairly new, and the cost of living is very affordable compared to many places closer to the city. Only about 30 minutes to downtown Charleston via I-26, it’s a great place for commuters to call home. Parents will appreciate the terrific local schools and family-friendly events like the annual Flowertown Festival.

Property Ratings at Colonial Park I
I remember when a one bedroom was $375 a month and now they are just ripping off people. They are jumping on the Summerville growth explosion and taking peoples money. No way would I pay what they want for a one bedroom now. Sooner or later people are going to start leaving the area, no one can afford to live here anymore.
I lived here for 10 months and I hated it so bad. Please do not trust these people at all. As soon as they get your money. They won't have anything else to do with you. It takes weeks for maintenance issues, the apartments haven't been updated since the 1970's, and they can't keep a good cleaning crew and maintenance crew so you are on your own. Some people never have gotten things fixed in there apartment because the company wants people who were living here when the weather's were in charge to move to another apartment and charge them higher rent. It was much better when the weather's were in charge. They cared more about people than money. They never answer there phone and if you tell them about drugs, disrespectful neighbors, noise or domestic violence then they consider you complaining and you get on there bad side. They want to charge you for any and everything and treat you any kind of way and expect you to be quiet and put up with there mess. On top of all that, I only had running hot water for 5 minutes to take a shower and I payed a 100 dollars out of my pocket to steam clean the carpet and now they want to sue me for over a thousand dollars because they claim I broke my lease. I gave them plenty of notice, a legit excuse and they signed the document for me to leave. I was also told in the beginning of my least that if I had to go just give them 60 day notice and I'll be fine but when the time came they got amnesia and now want to sue me. Lots of people here are unhappy and ready to leave. The proper authorities need to get involved.
This is a cheap, low-end starter apartment. If you move into this place with any expectations higher than that, you're going to be very disappointed. With realistic expectations (and a short lease), you at least won't hate living here, hopefully. To start, the apartments were built in the early 1970s, and it shows. Paneling, rickety floors, cracked walls, doors that don't shut properly, wires running through odd places, dated heating and air systems, all things you would expect from an aging apartment. The kitchen is tiny, with only one drawer and limited cabinet space, but the other rooms are spacious enough. The bedroom includes a walk-in closet, though most of the space is taken up by a water heater. The appliances look relatively new but only work some of the time, which wouldn't be as big of an issue if the leasing company actually had an office on-site. The office is actually on the other side of Summerville, in another sketchy-looking apartment complex, making it hard to get ahold of anyone. Getting them to repair anything is quite the challenge, which is not ideal when you're living in an older apartment. This is all bearable, but it's the community itself that makes this such a difficult place to live in. For every one or two decent tenants, there's five or six rowdy, strung-out, creepy ones who stink up the buildings with cigarettes and weed and are just generally inconsiderate. Flashing blue lights and loud arguments are not uncommon sights and sounds. I feel uncomfortable leaving my wife at home by herself because of the kinds of people I've seen lurking around this place. Even for a lower-end apartment, it's pretty rough. The convenience of living in the middle of Summerville is overshadowed by, well, living in the middle of Summerville. The commerce of the nearby shopping centers is quite loud and distracting, and of course the traffic on nearby Main Street and Berlin G. Myers Parkway is frustrating. But I will admit, having spent so much time living in a small town, having so many things within a few minutes away is quite nice. I wouldn't recommend living here for any longer than necessary. It's reasonable if you're trying to save up for something better, but I wouldn't make this place your target if your price range can go a bit higher. Spend a little more to find a place that can offer you more.
