South Square is southwest of Downtown Durham, roughly halfway to Chapel Hill and about two miles south of Duke University. Many shopping centers line the streets, attracting consumers from all over the Triangle region. Movie theaters, bowling alleys, restaurants, dozens of large retail stores and small specialty shops provide a variety of options for ways to spend a day off.
In addition to commercial spaces, South Square provides a variety of housing, from tree-lined streets with single-family homes to modern apartment buildings and spacious townhomes. With easy access to Highway 501 and Durham-Chapel Hill Boulevard, commuting to either Durham or Chapel Hill is a breeze. Golfers appreciate the nearby Hope Valley Country Club, while nature lovers appreciate Duke Forest, a few minutes north of the neighborhood. The forest is home to the unique Duke Lemur Center, the world's largest lemur center.

Thank you so much for taking the time to leave us a great rating, Irfan - it's much appreciated!
Loved the actual apartment layout and floor plan. Plenty of storage as well as two bathrooms. The neighbors are extremely inconsiderate and screaming children are everywhere. We had to call security at least once a week for extreme noise complaint. They also took away valet trash which lead to trash everywhere. No formal rules on dogs running around off leash as well.

Everyone at the office is so helpful and friendly. My apt was great and ready when I moved in. You have the pool to yourself mostly during the weekdays!!! Neighbors are also nice and family oriented!

Kim thank you for the review! Customer satisfaction is our top priority at GSC, and we appreciate the opportunity to have exceeded your expectations!
A Disappointing Move-In Day: -Upon arrival, it was apparent that when the last resident left, they just kept everything as is. There were no “finishing touches” to welcome us as a new resident and it seemed like nothing was cleaned or polished when we entered. -There were dirty vents with garbage where the cool air and heat enters from. -The AC didn't work. -The front entrance was covered in cigarette butts, our valet trash can was still filled with rainwater when we arrived. They told us it would be emptied and cleaned out. -There were no screens on the windows, and they didn't lock. -It was exactly the way we saw it when we viewed the apartment and many promises were broken. Another One Bites the Dust: -Two electrical sockets were malfunctioned. -It turns out that ALL the windows did not have screens or locks on them. -Improper sealants on the doors. During our entire residence, rain water leaked into our apartment if it rained too hard. -There were no smoke/carbon monoxide detectors. -Cracks and blemishes were covered with botched paint jobs. -We weren’t surprised when the handle that determines if we want to take a shower or a bath failed. We could only take a shower.

Edward, we value all resident feedback and would welcome the opportunity to address any concerns you may have in greater detail. Please feel free to give our team a call at your earliest convenience. We hope to work together to improve your rating of our community.
I would give this place 2.5 stars. Pros: The management team was always available and responsive, as was the maintenance. I mentioned keeping the grounds cleaner and almost immediately I saw a major uptick in staff cleaning up the property. My apartment was pretty run of the mill - it was clean and had new carpet when I moved in. I also loved the diversity of my neighbors, lots of kids and family which made it feel safe. The pool is nice and not very busy, the location is pretty nice too - close by pretty much everything. Cons: The buildings are older so I constantly had trouble with it being too hot upstairs which is where the bedrooms are, so that was uncomfortable on hot days. It is a lower income demographic that lives there, so some things are to be expected. I never felt particularly unsafe even when I went to the gym at 6am and came home late some nights. Actually on two occasions a neighbor came by and let me know my interior car light was on. There was an armed robbery and shooting that took place in the building across the parking lot. We got a security system after that and I felt much better. In short - this is decent for the money, diverse neighborhood with lots of kids (an aspect I really enjoyed). If you're anxious about crime, you probably want to pass on this place and find a complex a bit further out from the city or in a slightly better neighborhood.

I have been here for 3 years now.... I have searched around for other apartments but i have found that colonial townhouse have everything I need. Spacious rooms, big kitchen, great location to banks, stores, restaurants, doctor office and my job!!! Management, staff and maintence are very nice and are on point when I need assistance with my apartment or other matters. I am so excited about the new renovations additions; new roof, doors, stainless steel kitchen applications, including front loader washer /dryer and more... Oh yea, I feel much safer ... security have increased 90% . love it!!
I have been there for almost 5 years. It is on the bus line and has stores in the immediate area. My building has a large courtyard in the back. Brand new playground for the children to play on. Very helpful staff to help with your concerns or needs.
I am not so happy about my current apartment because of it is a bit behind the times. I do understand that many people are going through harder times than myself in their apartments but we are way overdue for some simple upgrades. I love my neighborhood, but with the rising rent I think my complex doesn't do enough in regards to renovations.
Very spacious, nice neighborhood, pet friendly, lots of kids if you have a family. Staff are very friendly and assure you the all apartment issues will be repaired in a timely matter.
A VERY GOOD PLACE TO LIVE .I HAVE BEENING LIVEING HERE FOR ABOUT 3 YEARS .I AND LIKE IT.AND THE OFFFICE STAFF IS NICE.
This property is a slum. Don't be fooled by the pictures. If you don't have money, Durham, in general, is hard to live in. There are many other towns that are nicer, so if you can choose go to raleigh or chapel hill.
Service is horrible at the office and maintence...
