Crystal is a suburban city located on the northwest side of Minneapolis, with fast access to downtown just seven miles away. Heavily wooded and dotted with lakes, Crystal is as scenic as it is convenient. The city's 27 parks include John Grogan Park, home of the popular Crystal Community Center and the Crystal Grove Aquatic Center.
While it's true that apartments in Crystal will provide fast access to nearby Minneapolis, this convenient location features an airport as well as fast access to I-94 and I-694. The beautiful lakes and emerald green landscape have made Crystal a popular Minneapolis suburb, and its growing economic landscape have earned it a "Minnesota Star City" designation.

Property Ratings at Sumter Green Apartments
Where to begin. The management/maintenance staff respond to requests for items needing to be fixed fairly quickly. If you are renting anything other than a top floor unit you WILL have sound issues. I lived at Sumter Green almost 2 years and have had multiple residents move in and out above me. The units had sound issues when I first moved in, but when they upgraded the apartment above me with all vinyl wood floors and removed all carpet it got much worse. You can hear EVERY footstep. You can even hear a cat running around all across the ceiling. Every single thing the person above you does you WILL hear. The sound proofing is so bad you can actually make out what people are saying above you. The apartment's finishes were decent... but the complete lack of peace and quiet totally ruined my time here. I had to have fans and an air purifier running at night to try to drown out the noise so I could sleep. Unless you are renting a top floor apartment.. I highly suggest to avoid this place. There are better options out there for the rent they are charging. I have rented from over 7 different apartment complexes over the years and this has by far been the LOUDEST I've ever had. Secondary issue.. There have been multiple sketchy situations at the building including cops being called over to intervene. There are always random vehicles pulling up in the middle of the night with loud bass parked out front for periods of time. Not sure what that's been about. They don't allow burning CANDLES! This was a "fix" to combat the constant smell of weed in the hallways. Fun fact... it still smells like weed in the hallways.
When we first moved in, there were maggots coming in through the vents from another unit. The walls and ceilings are super thin. You can hear everything. A couple moved in above us with their husky and they would pound & stomp all the time, jump and play with their dog between the hours of 6am-midnight every single day. The husky would sit on their balcony most days and bark at everyone that walked by, which was on the parking lot side of the building. We complained to management 3 times and confronted the couple twice and the only thing management did about it was tell us to document it and offered a mediation as if that would really change anything. There’s a lot of car break-ins if you’re not parked in a garage - which costs $60. When you get a garage neighbor, your garage key will start malfunctioning and management doesn’t communicate anything to you. When that happened to us, the garage wouldn’t open at all. Luckily, we were just getting home rather than trying to leave when it happened otherwise our car would’ve been stuck inside of the garage all weekend and there would be nothing we could do about it until maintenance finally comes and opens it on their own time. We witnessed a hit & run one night by a drunk driver when there was a car parked in the street. There’s always police sirens, power outages, and internet outages. The hallways are always dirty and always stink. The paint on the bathroom walls peel every time we showered because there isn’t enough ventilation, even with the door opened. Management will renovate units for 2 months straight without any warning and that made it hard to work from home when it was constantly noisy. Packages are always stolen. There’s a smoke-free policy but everyone smokes in there anyways. I had to always cover my face when I walked through the hallways due to my lung condition. Management doesn’t care about its residents. There’s no professionalism or communication from them and no one is ever available at the office. This place is over-priced and they continue to raise rent and separate utilities. They’ll always find a reason to take the security deposit even when the apartment is move-in ready. You can find way better quality for the amount they charge in rent and utilities which, by the way, includes internet that isn’t optional.
The worst APT complex ever. Onsite management just wants your money. The laundry room smells. The whole place is super dirty. Staff dont do much to improve the quality of this place. They just rip you off, please be careful.
BAD PLACE TO RENT!!!! READ CAREFULLY!!!! The administration on the building is pretty bad you can request something from them and they will never get back to you.. we asked for information about the extra storage that they had assigned in the basement floor and they could never get a decent answer.. same as when we tried to rent one of the outdoor garages, same thing.. we called the office 3 times and never good an answer.. the last time the lady while talking to me got other call and just rushed me over the phone saying.. " i'll get back to you after i check if we have any garages available" an as the other times.. that call never came. And finally when we decided to move out to a better place the lame excuse they put to deduct "Cleaning chargers" was totally ridiculous. we left the apartment ready for the next people ready to move in.. but you can see that they want to keep any of your money since is a complex that is loosing a lot of tenants maybe because of the same reasons that people notice the bad administration. The place is ok.. but they don't invest on things that are more important for the tenants on out building the top floor where we use to live had only 1 washer and 1 dryer machine for the entire floor.. the mid floor 2 and 2 and the bottom floor 1 and 1 and you are allowed to used them from 8 am to 10 pm... so if you look on line that is the only complex building in the area with all that many empty apartments available, that proofs how people we are leaving that place for other that is really worth what you pay for. I can warranty you that if you look on line around that complex, you'll find other building for the same rent that might have storage, elevator or underground parking included. Anyway.. just HEADS UP... rent there on your own risk!!!
Sumter Green is an okay deal for what you pay, but there is one outstanding issue drove me to move after a 12 month lease. The building is not sound proof in any way. Every footstep, voice, and song can be heard from neighboring apartments. Luckily I was top floor, but this meant that my neighbors would pound on the ceiling whenever I walked from the bedroom to the kitchen. I didn't feel like I was able to exist in my own home, it completely ruined my time here.
I started to live during the transition to the new ownership of the complex. The new features are very good with guest suite, lounge, gym, pool etc. Maintenance is onsite with just a online form fill up. The place is safe and the management listens to the tenant carefully to fix any issue. I will recommend this complex for high class living.
The apartments and the grounds are kept up decently well, with everything being clean and maintained as such. The office staff, though, are less than satisfactory. They rarely are available in the office or by phone by 8am (the time which they open at on weekdays), which is an obvious issue if there is something urgent that needs attention. This is exacerbated by the fact that you cannot contact maintenance directly, so you are stuck waiting around for someone to get to the office or call you back. Additionally, they are not proactive in their communication of noted on-going issues. For example, the garage doors (garages are $60/mo. for a single space, by the way) are notorious for not staying closed. This is quite common when the weather is cold or there is snow - the garage door will go all the way to the ground and bounce back up. It's common to see several garage doors open at night due to this issue. This happened to one of the other tenants in my building, and his car broken into b/c of it. In my opinion, it would have been courteous and professional for the office to send an email, at least, or a memo out stating that they were aware of the garage door issue and that tenants leasing garages should make sure that the doors remain down when closed. No such email/memo was sent, and it seems they are ignoring the issue. There are several more instances of similar circumstances. All in all, the apartments are nice, relatively spacious and tenants, as a whole, are friendly. The office staff, however, do not uphold their website's claim, "Crystal Village is professionally managed, with on-site staff."
I cannot say enough good things about this apartment complex. I was a little nervous about renting at first because of some of the reviews. The office staff has always been prompt and up front with me. I truly can't find anything to complain about. I had to break my lease early because of work relocating me and they were very accommodating. The people here are friendly. I have never felt unsafe and have had no problems. Can't say enough good things. Thanks Crystal Village.
Property Manager at Sumter Green Apartments, Responded To This Review
Thank you so much for this phenomenal feedback! We're so very glad to see that the entirety of your stay here at Crystal Village was definitively positive. Our team works hard to provide our residents with the best possible stay in our community, so it's wonderful to see that their efforts contributed to making this a place you were happy to call home. It was a joy having you in the community, and while we're sad that you had to leave the neighborhood, we sincerely wish you the best in all your future endeavors. Thank you, Crystal Village Staff
Renovated apartments are beautiful and spacious. I really did love my apartment and the home I created. However, over time I felt increasingly less safe. Be very aware of your surroundings and stay alert. I smelled marijuana often. Before I moved out I saw dumpster divers. I heard stories of people’s cars being broken into. Ultimately I left because I felt personally targeted, and no longer felt safe in my environment and home. I was not the only person to feel this way. I sincerely hope that Crystal Village takes strides to make their residents more safe.
I had a fantastic experience living at Crystal Village. Leif helped me with getting my apartment remodeled. I love my new apartment. It looks fabulous! The staff is all very good. When there’s a problem they’re on it right away. I’ve lived here 22 years! They updated my place periodically before. Crystal Village wants to keep its tenants happy. It’s a great place to live!
I wouldn’t recommend this place at all! I went to go look at a one bedroom 3/3/18 and was told about the rent special where you can get half off your first months rent or get a garage for a year at no charge. I decided to continue with the process because of that. The next day when I went to do the application and pay for my deposit I was told that the promotion was over and that I should’ve applied the day before. Janet(the manager who told me this) gave me her supervisor number. I called him today and told him that online it shows the promotion I was told about and asked him would he honor it, he told me would call back. I have yet to hear from him and now I see that he changed the special online! I’m so happy that I didn’t sign a lease with a company that changes their mind in less than 24 hours and doesn’t have integrity enough to keep their word. GOOD LUCK PEOPLE!
I absolutely loved living here and was sad to go. I had a one bedroom apartment for one year and had plenty of space for a great price. The management staff was always helpful, kind, and quick to solve any problems I had.
We got notice of a 75 dollar rent increase 5 days before we needed to give notice to move out. That is not enough time to find a new apartment. They also prohibit people from moving out for 5 months of the year. Your lease will say that you cannot move out from October to March (I think) The apartment was comfortable and maintenance was done on time, but I encourage you to look elsewhere if possible. There is no reason to deal with such poor management.
They keep accusing me of having people live with me. Harassing anyone who comes visit me! It's ridiculous...Can't wait to move
Crystal Village is a well kept quiet complex. Maintenance is generally quick to respond, issues are addressed timely and there's a great pool to use throughout summer. I have lived here with my son for eight years and its we are now trying to find a dog friendly apartment.
Updated spacious apartment with walk-in closet space, outdoor pool and large courtyard and play area. Staff is courteous and respond quickly to maintenance requests.
I really Like the people who live in the apartments but the management and maintenance is horrible.
Our two-bedroom, one bathroom apartment has spacious rooms and cross-ventilation in both bedrooms. It has two air conditioners, one in the living room and the other in the master bedroom. It is carpeted, except in the entry, kitchen, dining area, and bathroom. The rental office staff is friendly and helpful, and maintenance requests are taken care of quickly. There is a large public green space and swimming pools. There are garages for rent, as well as free, unassigned open parking. City buses run nearby, but only on weekdays. We enjoy living here.
I moved into Crystal Village Apartments six years ago and I had a great experience with the property management and maintenance team. I decided to move back four months ago and now they have remodeled apartments that are beautiful. The caretakers do a great job on keeping the building and landscape clean. Maintenance gets done on a timely manner and the office staff really care about their residents. If your looking for a great place to live, I would recommend this one.
They are a really nice apartments the staff is great! they help in a timely manner if you need work done in you apartment.
Crystal Village Apartments are decent apartments with very resonance rent for what you are getting compared to other places in the area. The buildings aren't the newest, and the coin operated laundry is a bummer, but they are updating apartments so you can get an apartment with brand new alliances and cabinets for a great price. The buidling I live in is fairly quiet, the only issue are the potheads in the lower level who stink up the halls. Never had a problem with maintenance or the property manager, and things are fixed within a few days.
I liked it. Near to my office. Nice neighborhood. Good location. Good views.
I loved this place! The rooms were so adorable and I loved the layout. The whole place and outside looked nice as well. The overall place was amazing. I was planing to apply for an apartment but I waited too long and it got taken, I was so sad! They go fast! I would definitely recommend this place!
