Property Ratings at Deerwood
The property tricks you with friendly staff who support you through the leasing process - answering your calls and treating you friendly. The facility looks nice enough and the rental price is almost too good to be true. And so you sign your lease and happily move in to your new apartment with high ceilings, ample closet spaces, and large windows that let in lovely light. And you are happy with your decision. AND THEN... They no longer take your phone call because they are too busy. Everything, you find, is a facade...the bathtub isn't fresh white and clean - but rather painted white. There is sewage smell emitting from every pipe. You enter maintenance requests and it takes days - if not weeks before someone shows up and some maintenance staff talk to you with disrepsectful, scolding tones, and put bainaides on things that truly need serious attetion and repairs. AND THEN... Your water is shut of regularly because there is ALWAYS something wrong with the plumbing. And then your mail boxes are closed down for several months because they were broken in to and now you have to go to the psot office to get your mail. And your car is broken in to and the deadbolt to your storage locker is cut and creepy men are prowling around your property at night looking for something to steal. STAY AWAY AT ALL COSTS! This is a low income project, masquerading as a suburban "retreat". (that is their word choice - just check out their website - what a joke!)
We have lived at Deerwood Apartments in San DIego for the past three years. During that time, our sinks, tubs and toilets have been regularly clogged. Sewage has been in our home - covering floors, filling tubs and sinks, even blocking our front door - many times. We have regular visits from emergency plumbing companies at all hours of the night. Countless times our water has been shut off - for hours and hours at a time. You call the front office - and no one answers. In fact its their policy to not answer their phones. The office is only open on Tuesday through Saturdays, 10 am to 6 pm, and even on those days and times, you will often find the office doors locked. You will send emails to the office, and the often go completely unanswered - or perhaps answered - but in a dismissive way. You try contacting a "headquarters" office - and the dismiss you as well. You reach out to the "corporate" office in New York - and no one replies. If you are good with lack of water, and sewage in your home - if you are good with no customer service - then this place is for you.
My experience with this place wasn't all together bad, but my biggest gripe is with Deerwood's unethical business practices, and disrespectful treatment towards a disabled veteran. My advice would be to find another place to live, especially if you are looking for something long term. I can't fit everything I'd like to say about Deerwood in this limited review space, but I will highlight the key points. Deerwood's staff is very intrusive, they frequently (every month or 2) would notify us that they would be entering our apartment for random reasons, unprompted. They wait as long as possible before issuing a renewal offer, and regardless of how good you were as a tenant (paying rent on time, never having issues with neighbors or staff) they will increase rent to the max allowable by law. For me it was more than a $300 increase. They will take advantage of their position by charging for any perceived discrepancies post move out, no matter how immaculate you make the unit look after vacating it (nearly invisible scuffs on ceilings). After moving out I find out I will not be getting any deposit back, and they are actually looking to collect $180. After many months of disputes, and thinking they realized their mistake, I find that they turned me over to collections. Definition of "Taking Advantage"
It is almost always very quiet, the pool is very clean and there is an air conditioned gym room, and all cardio machines have TV attached to them. Overall I love this apartment complex and the main property manager always is reachable by email and replies quickly.
When we had to relocate from Las Vegas to San Diego, we searched for apartments to rent for a year before we buy a home. We needed a pet friendly place, and Deerwood is it. We see many breeds of dogs ranging from very small to quite large. There is a fee per pet (ups to 3 pets). I went online and found Deerwood Apartments in the Rancho Bernardo area of San Diego. We thought by the pictures that the kitchen was tiny, but it's much larger than the photos indicated. The buildings are nice, grounds are well maintained. The staff has been exceptional, everyone in the office and the maintenance staff has gone out of their way to make us feel welcome. The complex is located very near a lot of shopping as well as a large number of high-tech companies doing business in the area. The pool area is really nice, with a large jacuzzi and two newly installed gas grills. There is a nice gym with enough equipment to satisfy needs of residents. The only drawback is it's a touch pricey, but given the area, that is to be expected. All in all, a very nice place, I recommend it.
I could not be more happy with where I live! It's more of a small community then an apartment building. For what I can afford to pay I hit the jackpot with finding my place! The appliances are new, I have hardwood/carpet flooring. Lots of natural light and even a washer/dryer in my unit! Not to mention the great amenities, pool and fitness center that are always kept nice and clean. The management and staff are all nice and helpful. If you have a maintenance request it's simple and easy to request online and they come in about 24 hours. Simple fast and easy to pay rent online. I can't say enough good things about this place! Definitely happy to call this place home!
