Westlake is a small, urban neighborhood named for its location on the western shores of Lake Union. A sizeable houseboat community calls Westlake home in addition to numerous condos, apartments, single-family homes, and office buildings. Lake Union provides Westlake residents with a host of outdoor activities, from boating to scuba diving and everything in between.
While Westlake touts a metropolitan atmosphere, most of the area’s popular restaurants and shops are located in nearby Queen Anne, Fremont, South Lake Union, and Eastlake. Situated just two miles north of Downtown Seattle, Westlake offers residents easy commutes and quick access to big-city amenities.

Property Ratings at Dexter Lake Union
I was extremely excited to move into this apartment complex in a central location but immediately found it to be overpriced with poor amenities and poorly designed/built apartments. The freshly-renovated unit had a broken laundry machine. It took 2 months for a replacement to arrive with no updates from management. After I complained, the then-Assistant Manager finally told me the building’s owner is cheap and wants multiple bids to pick the least expensive option. Other amenities (rooftop furniture and gym equipment/HVAC) remain broken/unusable for long periods of time. Gym HVAC stopped working during heatwave, and management did not notify residents or provide alternatives for cooling and safety/ Security issues are huge issue management doesn't address. My unit was broken into and robbed. On top of this, I personally incurred cleaning fees due to the burglary. While the building did move to me another unit, management made me pay a higher rent. This new unit also had severely outdated fixtures and appliances, making it grossly overpriced then and now. Ongoing issues include - The “gym” is poorly equipped and always reeks of body odor. - Package room not secure and in garage. Even with gate, people break in. A tenant could get hurt encountering a thief. Current management was unresponsive to my complaint in writing. - Units on the very top floors are only accessible by garage elevators, which is unsettling because of car break-ins. Rear elevators are often vandalized. - Poor window insulation everywhere, Aurora-facing apartments are especially noisy. The maintenance team, current manager and assistant manager have been reasonable and nice to chat with. That said, this doesn’t make up for the multitude of issues I encountered. I’m very excited and relieved that I finally managed to move out of this building.

I am compelled to express my profound dissatisfaction with the management and overall state of the apartment complex, which has significantly impacted my living experience here. One of the most pressing issues is the condition of the trash rooms. They are consistently neglected, overflowing, and unkempt, which not only detracts from the cleanliness of the complex but also poses health concerns. Additionally, there is a serious safety concern due to the frequent presence of homeless individuals in and around the building. This situation has made many residents, including myself, feel unsafe and uncomfortable. The lack of effective security measures and management's apparent indifference to addressing this issue is alarming. What is most frustrating, however, is the apparent lack of accountability from the office staff. Reports and complaints seem to go unheeded, with little to no action taken to rectify ongoing issues. Requests for assistance or intervention are often met with apathy, leaving residents feeling ignored and undervalued. This experience has been deeply disappointing, and I urge potential renters to consider these serious issues when making their housing decisions. Management's failure to maintain basic standards of cleanliness and security, combined with their overall unresponsiveness, makes living here untenable.

Toured recently and loved the spacious floor plans that were offered. I hope to come back later to look at the two bedrooms since they were not ready to view yet.

Dexter is a great place to live. While the building is older than most on the block, in my opinion older buildings are built to last. The new team has been working hard to make this a better home for us and we appreciate it.

This is the worst place to live, leasing office staff are lazy and don't do a single thing, office is supposed to be open 7 days a week but is always closed on the weekends with no one there, that is ridiculous

This apartment doesn’t get the basics right !!! It fails to provide a secure home and secure space for your car. Your packages go missing, your home appliances don’t work and will not get replaced even after countless complaints. If you want a full time job dealing with hundred problems caused by this apartment, then dexter provides that perfect nightmare

DO NOT COME LIVE HERE AT ALL. Do not come live here unless you like getting broken into. In our 2 months living here we have gotten our car window smashed from their "secure parking garage" that we pay $200 for and also got out (supposedly secure residence storage room) stolen out of which we pay around $50 for per month. We lost more than $1,000 worth of things from our storage that had a lock and you need a key to get into the room, we saw other people's storages had been opened and stolen out of too. We thought we got a good deal since we got the 6 week free special but now we understand it's because the apartments don't spend a dime in updating their security system. Have no working cameras at all so now its becoming a concern how easily could someone just break into an apartment. I try to give every place the benefit of the doubt since there are people that complain about anything and try to bring the ratings of apartments down but this is absolutely insane. Management seems to be very nice and such but there clearly is an issue with upper management wanting to keep these apartments insecure as hell. I would rate them a 0 if I could and it is so sad because we were so excited to move here and to the area but upon being here 2 months we have lost thousands of dollars in things being stolen in one month alone. Save yourself and do not come live here, the price is not worth it unless you want to walk away with nothing.

Moving internationally, from Sydney to Seattle, I am grateful for how easy Dexter has made the process. The entire staff has been super helpful in the leasing and moving-in process, especially Gizelle.

Hi there, we are very happy to have provided you with such a positive experience!
I had a great experience speaking with the leasing staff! I’ve been working with Gizelle for about two months now and she has been very helpful and knowledgeable about the area. Looking for apartments has been very stressful for my family and I but she has made the search all the more pleasant. On top of that our children love her! It make us feel like Dexter can be a home for us in the future.

Hello, Thank you for the amazing review! Nothing excites me more than finding the perfect home for everyone that walks through Dexter's door. Thank you for your interest in Dexter and we hope to see you again soon! - Gizelle Sinclair (Leasing Professional)
This apartment is literally the WORST. After many months and many complaints about the noisy trash compactor running at night. They finally agreed to turn it off after 10PM so I removed my original review. But not for long. After 4 weeks, everything was back. The trash compactor runs all night long. Every 30 minutes to be exact. This time the building management team don’t care for sure. They stopped responding to our emails. They refused to do anything. They refused to release our contract so we can go find another place. They’d charge us penalties if we wanna break the contract. I’m living in HELL at this place. I talked to many people who are living here. They’re also complaining but get no response whatsoever. We’re living in the WORST HELL. I contacted the local police and sent videos about the noisy machine running at night. I contacted Seattle Department of Construction & Inspections. More to come on that. PEOPLE. YOU SHOULD AVOID THIS PLACE AT ALL COST. IN FACT, YOU NEED TO

Dexter Lake Union is a great place to stay. We have been living here for more than 3 years now. Everything is good except for security in parking garage which they have improved now, and I am hoping to see it improve more with time.

Hi, we're happy you have found our staff to be so supportive during your experience here at Dexter Lake Union. Thank you for the 5-star rating, and have a fantastic day!
In the past year with COVID, we've had multiple packages stolen, a bike stolen, and notices of multiple break ins into cars in the parking garage. Every time I've asked about a stolen package, the front office has said that they will check the security cameras, but I've never had anyone update me on what they saw in the footage. They have always asked me to just re-order the package and that it was most likely my fault for not saying to put it in the package locker. They're not willing to take responsibility for any of these happenings. Also, the garbage room on our floor has been dirty for the last month until they cleaned it up this week. If we're forced to pay $35 a month to pay for trash service, at least they could keep the communal spaces clean. There have also been multiple rats around the main garbage disposal area near the entrance to the parking garage during July and August. All in all, I'm not impressed with the apartment any more. The staff members in the past years have been wonderful and courteous but since 2021, all of my positive thoughts about the building, Greystar, and management have gone out the window
Property Manager at Dexter Lake Union, Responded To This Review
Thank you for your feedback, and we’re sorry to hear that your experience with us didn’t meet your expectations. As you mentioned, we did get almost entirely new staff at the end of 2021. We have been listening to our residents' concerns and take them very seriously, and have been working to remedy everything that we have control of. We would like the opportunity to try to remedy this situation for you, so please contact us at dexterlake@greystar.com or (206)283-7100 and we can discuss this further.
I've been living in Dexter Lake Union for nearly 4 years, and everything has been good until recently when the building manager and staffs were changed. I had 4 packages coming safely to package concierge within a week, and all of them were retrieved by the leasing team. When I went to ask for my packages, they said they already delivered to my apartment front door. However, I didn't see any package at all even though I stayed at home the whole week. This really raises the question of the trust and reliability of the staffs in the building. The manager didn't give me any explanation or solution. I really disappointed and feel unsafe because of the staffs in the building.
Property Manager at Dexter Lake Union, Responded To This Review
Hi Hoa, Thank you for taking the time to leave us a review. It is always our goal to provide exceptional customer service, and I’m sorry that we did not live up to this expectation. When packages are in the lockers for 5 or more days, we often deliver them to the doors so that there is room in the lockers for new packages. As we discussed, the next step would be to submit a claim with the companies you bought the items from. We can certainly send you the proof of when we picked up your packages if this will assist with your claim. After contacting the companies, please let us know if there is anything else we can do to help. Thank you again for your review, and we hope to be able to turn your experience around. Sincerely, The Dexter Lake Union Team

Great place to live. Friendly and professional Staff members who take time to help with any problems. The location is convenient to downtown & a short walk to Lake Union is a wonderful perk. The recent paint & carpet upgrades make the building even better.

We love hearing that you are pleased with the recent upgrades to our community. We sincerely thank you for the positive review, and look forward to seeing you again soon!
It has been a year since the pandemic started and management has yet to outfit the gym properly. First, the dumbbells were stolen, then the gym was closed, then they re-opened it, and finally opened it again in mid-January 2021. They've had a whole year to replace the stolen dumbbells which to this day they have not. There is a gap from 12 lbs dumbbells to 35 lbs dumbbells. All other amenities are less than basic in comparison to what other buildings offer for the same rent. The roof top is poorly furnished, the 4th floor garden could use some sprucing up too. The elevators are super slow and unfortunately, there's nothing they can do about that. However, double booking two elevators next to each other for move-ins at once is extremely frustrating. Good luck finding a cart to carry your Costco box across the entire building. The maintenance team gets 5 stars. They've been the best so far! Some parts of the building are very loud and no one seems to care. There is an army of rats by the dumpsters every evening. Not sure how they can get rid of them. There's also a homeless encampment on the south side of the building.
Property Manager at Dexter Lake Union, Responded To This Review
Thank you for taking the time to express your concerns. Unfortunately, due the pandemic, several of our amenity spaces were closed for quite a while in accordance with the mandates at the time. Thankfully they are all back open now and fully operational. Please note that we have recently undergone a change in our management staff and are actively working to make improvements throughout our community. The office is always available to take your call and it is our pleasure to work with you to resolve any issues you may still have. Please feel free to contact us at 206-283-7100 or dexterlake@greystar.com to discuss this further.
Great maintenance. Well maintained interior and exterior. Great location. Horrible management. Unfriendly and rude residents. No sense of community whats so ever. If youre looking for a sense of community and great apartment living, you could probably do better elsewhere.

I had a bad experience trying to rent a one bed room apartment from DexterLakeUnion, i have tried calling multiple times trying to schedule a tour, looks like the tour is not available till next week, i told the team that i am ready to apply and move in to the unit i selected , the leasing team responded with that, part of the ongoing special would not apply till i tour the apartment , again the tour for which is not available, this is not logical, the leasing team was not very helpful, and never reached back to help.

The apartment layout is great. Hallways and common areas clean, yet thin walls, and extremely noisy that goes beyond regular apartment living. If you have to wake up early or looking for a semi-quiet place to live, this is probably not the place for you.

I have lived here for a little over a year. I really like the building. However, there are things I'd like to change Pros: -great community with monthly wine Friday's where you can mix and mingle with co-residents. -Ample parking, always able to find a parking spot. -Close to lake Union which is great for jogs and summer walks. -1-2 miles away from Whole Foods, metropolitan market and QFC -Great rooftop with grills and view Cons: -$25/mo trash fee that they won't let you opt out of -3 break-ins in the past 6 months. Man robbed front office stealing residents packages and broke into mailboxes stealing mail -a few restaurants within walking distance, not very many.
