Downtown Macon is probably best known as the home of Mercer University. The Cannonball House and Museum, built in 1853, is the only house in Macon to be hit by a cannonball during the Civil War. Located along the Ocmulgee River, Downtown Macon is as picturesque as it is historic. It is also a college town, so you'll discover a variety of funky shops, art galleries, coffee shops, and restaurants. Downtown Macon offers a variety of events, including the Mulberry Street Market, the Central Georgia Greek Festival, and Macon's International Cherry Blossom Festival. The Cherry Blossom festival, held in March, celebrates the city's more than 300,000 Yoshino cherry trees -- more than any other city in the world, including Washington DC.
