Property Ratings at Foxchase Apartments
Horrible pest infestation problem. I lived in the apartments on Imboden street ( for reference) My neighbors all said they had pest problems as well. People would leave their furniture outside my door constantly, the washer and dryer was always broken. I had to ask constantly to get it fixed but it never did. I used to see my neighbors take their close to a laundry mat. I had to use other units laundry room. Eventually gave up and went to a laundry mat as well because theirs was broken too!! Overall if you were to believe any believe this one DO NOT LIVE HERE HORRIBLE.
Safety: The door is consistently unlocked and/or broken. All a person has to do is yank on the door with a little extra strength to gain access. The apartment complex is located next to Alexandria Hospital. Although there is nothing wrong with the hospital's efforts to help this community's most vulnerable, there are many undomiciled people and people in green gowns (given to patients with psychiatric conditions) roaming the streets in this apartment community. I was chased to my car, catcalled a lot, and had people banging on the windows at the gym in an attempt to scare me. Lastly, ~1 block away from the apartment complex 4-5 men threw Molotov cocktails into the 7-Eleven on our street. Also, there is a more recent shooting at the other 7-Eleven, which is like 5 minutes away. I also watched my neighbors being arrested. Parking: We both opted to pay for 2x reserved spots. His reserved spot was across the street, under a tree, and almost always flooded. His car sat in ~0.5 feet of water so often that there was algae growing in the Spring and a permanent outline of the bottom half of his tires made out of mud and snow in the Fall/Winter. People often parked in our reserved spots forcing us to park elsewhere. If you are thinking, I pay $60 for a reserved spot...if it is taken, I can park elsewhere in the permitted, first-come first-serve spots just overnight...Wrong. You get towed. Smoke-free community: False: Multiple people in our apartment complex smoked. The smoke travels into your apartment almost 24 hours/day. Pest Problem: Although we are very clean and tidy people who lived on the second floor, we frequently had mice and cockroaches in our apartment. After notifying them about mouse droppings on the kitchen counters, we were informed of a hole behind the dishwasher connecting to the AC balcony door. Although they closed the hole, we saw ANOTHER mouse. They moved the stove this time and found ANOTHER even larger hole. Lease: Be aware that your lease automatically renews. As we let them know 52 days in advance that we were choosing to not renew our lease and move out when the lease ended we were charged $405.50. You will not get your security deposit back. They will charge you for the painting of your entire apartment ($294.67) even if you put up only one painting. Do not worry about cleaning prior to moving out. They hire a cleaning company that charges you $130.00 no matter the state of your apartment.

If you have other questions or concerns please reach out to our Community Manager or to ICanHelp@AirCommunities.com. - Susan
Do not move here unless you are prepared to pay several hundred dollars in move out costs. The language in the lease is very subjective regarding move out procedures. I loved Foxchase until I had to deal with them when moving out and it’s been a nightmare ever since. You also pay a lot of fees while living here. It’s cheaper to live in Arlington, right next to DC.

Honestly from Annandale apartments to here has been a tremendous upgrade. They actually take care of the apartments and community. If there’s ever an issue and you let them know they will help. They’re friendly and gotta love how it’s an area you feel safe. Everyone minds their own business no one bothers you. Lovely area

It's a decent neighborhood. The rent is a bit high for such an old building/community, since there are pest control issues. The maintenance department is relatively response, but the adminisitrative office is no very available.

Hello. Thank you for sharing your feedback. We encourage our residents to submit a service request for preventative pest treatments routinely and more if necessary. Our rent for each apartment is determined by market rates, the lease length, features of the apartment, location and the lease start date. We price our rent to be competitive with similar communities in our area. Our maintenance team is top notch and can complete most service requests within 48 hours. We are sorry to hear our leasing team’s customer service has not met your expectations. We would like to have the opportunity to speak directly with you. Please send your contact information and any questions or concerns you may have to ICanHelp@AirCommunities.com. -Susan
There is a reason why Foxchase apartments are so reasonably priced for Alexandria. This reviews is especially for all my fellow tech consultants and Amazon workers moving to the area. They look decent at first glance, but tons of issues and management is no help. I lived here for a few years. I always had issues. In fact, Alexandria housing authority is well aware of the issues and got involved. Mice and roaches are a big issue. The neighborhood is dangerous. Earlier in the year, someone was beaten to death and left in the bushes. Robberies and thefts aren't uncommon. There are no cameras in parking lot. Worse, management is no help. They have been caught lying saying they fixed issues when they haven't... Additionally, the grounds are often gross and covered in trash. The no smoking rule is a joke, you smell cigarettes and weed everywhere. The door frames are metal and everyone slams them. You will hear it perfectly in your bedroom at night when your third floor neighbor comes home drunk at 3 am and slams their door. The parking situation is horrible, not enough spots available, even if you pay for parking. They constantly change the situation and what parking spots are available to use. They often block off multiple spaces for their maintenance team during the day, but there maintenance teams never use them. The worst part is the contractors they use. They leave nails and other stuff out in the parking lot. Any given week, you can see multiple cars with flat tires in the parking lot because contractors were careless and left nails on the ground. When management gets confronted, they say, they aren't our employees, they contractors, so not our problem. If you have money to afford another apartment, do it, don't think you will save money living here. It's not worth it...

Hello! Thank you for sharing your experience at Foxchase. We appreciate the feedback you have provided. It is our loyal residents that help us grow and become a better community. We apologize if at any time you felt our customer service did not meet your expectations. We have a third party exterminator that works with our residents weekly. Please submit a service request for pest treatments and they will work with you to eliminate all pest concerns. We are a very large community so there will be an occasional theft. We encourage residents to file a police report. We do not have evidence that we reside in a dangerous area. Our residents are our eyes and ears on the ground for identifying smoking violators. Our staff cannot be everywhere at once and we encourage our residents to identify smokers so we can address and fine the violation. I was charged monthly for pest control yet the apartment was always crawling with roaches. Despite keeping the apartment clean and constantly taking the trash out to avoid the pest, the roaches became more and more relentless. After accepting that I was stuck with the roaches, mice started coming out from behind the oven. I requested more pest control on top of the monthly service and all the maintenance did was put sticky traps under my sink and in one kitchen cabinet, leaving a mess along their way. This did nothing to stop the roaches or mice, leaving me to be forced to capture the mice myself and throw them out of the building.

The rent was already too high when they raised it with my lease renewal. I have empty units in my building that have gone without tenants for a long time, and I renewed my lease, and they raised my rent. I pay on time, in full, every month, don't disturb my neighbors, and I maintain my substandard, overpriced, tiny apartment. I did not want to move right now. The units in my building may remain without tenants because Foxchase does not value good tenants. Management does a poor job of notifying tenants of the need to access the units, sending out a notice that "sometime within the next 6 weeks" they will need to access your apartment and all belongings and furniture must be moved away from the walls, and pets put in cages. What, every weekday for 6 weeks? They are required to give 24 hours notice, and this doesn't cut it. They advertise they take credit cards for a convenience fee, but don't tell you it's a highway robbery level convenience fee. My unit is well located, there's plenty of transportation, buses, and it's near a couple of Metro stations. There's 2 grocery stores within walking distance. Neighbors maintain their pets (but, they're probably being fined with rent increases, too, so all the good tenants will be leaving). The apartment is one of the ones not refurbished, so the rent is ridiculous. They picked the cheapest app possible for the thermostat and door, so it never works correctly, and you always have to reset it. My door lock needed a new battery when I moved in, but management told me I just had to use it differently, a year later (after they punished me with a rent increase for being a good tenant) maintenance replaced the battery and now it works correctly. The washer and dryer in my building are also controlled by a different badly designed app. Sometimes it won't let you use the dryer. Sometimes it's down. It takes 5 minutes to find the washer and dryer in your building, even though there is only one of each. Tenants in my building block the door open all of the time, even though I live on Duke Street. This is a new phenomenon, probably associated with Foxchase punishing and chasing off good tenants with rent increases. The maintenance people are outstanding in every way. They come, get the work done quickly and right, and then they go away. Overall: don't. Foxchase doesn't want you.

Hello, thank you for sharing your experience and providing your feedback. We’re sorry your experience didn’t match your expectations. In reference to your rent increase, we feel our rates are competitive and on par with similar communities within our area. When it comes to work taking place inside resident’s homes, written notice is provided at least 24 hours prior to any maintenance work that may disturb our residents. We will always try to avoid disturbances but there are times we must access apartments to complete necessary work or for an emergency; the lease provides permission for this as well. I apologize that you had a negative experience with our apps each resident uses. We feel you are frustrated and we would like to address your concerns with you directly. Please email ICanHelp@aircommunities.com and provide your contact information. We look forward o hearing from you. -Susan
Utilities - fine. I'll pay those. But charge me $5/m rent for a service they chose to use and $5/m for a keyless door and "Smart" HVAC that rarely works properly? I'd rather save my $120 a year. Have had roaches in my apartment since before I moved in. Complained to leasing office. Maintenance came and spent less than 2 minutes in my unit.. The roaches come in when it rains and I've found them in the kitchen, my bedroom, and IN MY BED! If I request pest control (Which I pay about $10/month for already) to come, they will add the bill to my rent the following month? CRAZY. Parking is a joke. Don't bother paying the monthly lot fee. The spaces are too narrow and you won't be able to find a space after 7 pm. Street parking is free although the leasing office won't disclose that to you on your tour. Think twice before signing a lease here.

Management is so unresponsive and unreliable. They don’t care about your experience once you signed the lease. It’s a very nice and convenient location. Noise levels are very high. I’ve caught 7 mice already and I’ve been here for about a year. Ok

I lived here for 2 years, in 2 different apartments. The management and leasing staff are TERRIBLE. They never answer the phone, or call/email you back. I had to email the manager of the parent company to even get someone to talk to me about my move out. They honestly need to figure out better staffing because they are only helpful when you move in. Though the location is great, the buildings are old and need A LOT of work. They are "trying" to update the kitchens and bathrooms but honestly its just slapping a bandaid on the problem. Trust me, I moved right down the street for almost the same rent in a newer building, with a different company, and its amazing.

This place is horrible to live in— they will tow your car even when you’re in your PAID PARKING SPOT!!! There’s so many hidden charges!! They will charge you for every little thing. Stay away.
I recently moved out of a one-bedroom renovated unit after living there for 18 months. Pros: Foxchase is quite cheap The green spaces are nice, though there aren't really any seating areas/amenities set up outdoors. Cons: The renovations are very surface-level -- insulation and sound-proofing are very poor (we moved in in early January to find the heat was not functioning...they fixed it the next day but it was a very cold first night) and the buildings are poorly sealed so pests (mice, cockroaches, bugs with a millions legs I don't know the name of) are a big problem... ...even though twice a year you have to take literally everything out of your kitchen, bathroom, and closets so they can come in and spray really noxious pesticides. We got a hotel for the night both times to try and avoid breathing in the fumes. It can be really hard to get to management through their endless phone tree. They added a lot of unexpected charges when we moved out, as well, which was non-negotiable.
If you like little surprises in your daily life like waking up and not being able to see your car in your parking space, just rent an apartment here. Imagine, you'd like to head up your work, but guess what happened? Oh, sorry somebody towed your car! Welcome to Foxchase! Biggest regret!
Stay Away. This place is terrible. Awful lease. Dangerous neighborhood.
Poor quality and many many hidden extra fees. I regret moving here. Please save yourself from the horror.
Loud hallways, someone keeps breaking the front door to the building, tight parking and my car is always getting dinged... overpriced. Bug issues and someone enetered my apt without notice...
My friend applied for an apartment at FoxChase. I provided my debit card to cover the payments. A $500.00 deposit fee and a $50.00 application fee. His application got denied. No problem. I expected to lose my application fee. They said they would refund the $500.00 deposit back onto my card and that it could take 5-7 business days. It has been 7 days. Today, my friend received an email from FoxChase with a "Final Account Statement" attached. The document stated that the refund ($500.00) had been issued to him. I checked my bank account- no refund. I even asked him to check his bank account... No refund. So where is my money? They couldn't supply me with any transnational receipts. But my bank statement along with my friend’s leasing documents are all I need for filing my lawsuit. I’ll see them in court.

Hello, if you reach out to me at ICanHelp@Aimco.com, I can check on the status of that refund. Thanks! -George
I will be ecstatic to leave this place! Mold, pests, poorly maintained in general. I thought these buildings were great (because the relatively low rent), but let me assure you it is not worth signing a lease!

The apartment is unbearable. The doors and woods broke within couple months of movong in. The pubilc parking is always packed. And their charge for evwrything. Make sure you read the contract carefully, no like you can stop them from cahrging you for whatever reason they come up though. Be aware of the hiden fees. Or stay away if you can.

Hello, we do not have any hidden fees and we only charge based on what is outlined on the lease you signed. Have you submitted service requests about your doors and wood? We cannot make those fixes if the service team does not know about them. Feel free to reach out to me at ICanHelp@Aimco.com for help with this. Thanks! -George
Do not rent at Fox Chase apartments. They show you these nice model apartments and they apartment you rent looks nothing like that. I have been renting here for almost two years and it has been a terrible decision. When I first moved in the shower was not working and it took over a week to get fixed. I was without heat for about a week as well. It got down to 50 degrees in the apartment. When I first moved here they had a shuttle that would fit about 20 people and it would pick you up every 30 minutes. I picked this apartment complex because of the shuttle service only for it to be removed a few month late due to"no one riding it". The shuttle was packed I never rode it with a seat empty. Most recently they did a survey and there was "overwhelming results" for more reserved parking. There were already 5 spots in the lot that were reserved and only 3 were ever used. There are now 12 and they sit mostly empty. Before they added spots I already had a difficult time finding parking now it is almost impossible. I pay $15 per car to park on the street. To get a reserved spot is about $80. This complex does not care about it's tenants. They are just money hungry and are trying to get there tenants frustrated enough with parking so they pay $80 per month. Each year you are going to pay more for less as they take away more and more things.
I've lived in Foxchase almost 3 years, so I feel I can give a reliable picture of what it's like to live here as a young professional. First off, yes, the rent is very reasonable for Alexandria. However, utilities are not included so you should factor in an additional $200 or so when calculating the actual cost of living here (plus another $40 for parking, but more on that later). The location is great, I have a phenomenal commute, but it’s getting to the point where the costs are really outweighing the benefits of living here. If you've read other reviews where people say the admin/leasing office staff don't seem to care about residents, they're not wrong. The only good-natured people on the staff that I’ve met are the maintenance crew; everyone else is more concerned with squeezing as much money out of residents as they can. Be prepared for an increase in rent of at least $80 every time you’re up for renewal. Like squeezing blood from a turnip. They tell you when you move in that parking is readily available and that it is sufficient to have a $15/month parking permit for unreserved spaces. The reality is that many more spaces have been converted to reserved parking since I moved in, and most of them sit open all night while people without a reserved parking permit ($40/month) have to find street parking or one of a handful of unreserved spaces that are still left. Just tonight, I counted 20 open spaces in my lot and 21 open spaces in the lot across the street. All reserved, all empty. But they insist residents have been banging down their doors asking for more reserved parking. And don’t think you can get away with parking in a reserved space without a permit, even just for a couple of hours: they are ghoulishly proactive about towing, which will cost you a couple hundred dollars plus time off work to retrieve your car from the sketchiest impound lot I’ve ever seen. But hey, they bought a water rower for one of the fitness centers! Great use of resident funds. Never mind that these buildings go back to WWII and need to have all of the plumbing redone. Let’s just deck out the fitness centers and hope people don’t notice that they’re living in vermin-infested units that contain enough lead paint that you have to sign a waiver when you move in. In short, I’m in the market for a new apartment. Yes, the location is convenient, but the headache just isn’t worth it anymore.
Hi, current resident. I have never been more appalled by the quality of life at an apartment complex or the ability to contact ANYONE in the leasing office for anything ever. Save your money and rent elsewhere. Walls are paper thin, forget any privacy or quiet times. Bugs. So. Many BUGS. They just decimated half of the parking options. If you want to park near your unit, be prepared to pay an extra 40$ for a spot otherwise forget all night time social activities because you're not parking within a block and a half of your unit. The gym consists of a few treadmills and a bowflex weight trainer. The pools dont open till noon. Nothing they advertise as a great amenity is remotely worth the price of living here. My lease ends in 45 days and I cannot wait to friggin leave. Do yourself a favor and bypass this crappy complex.
I have been living at FoxChase for about a year now. Unfortunately I am locked in a 14 month lease or I would be out the door right now! There is so much wrong with this property. For starters the leasing office does not care at all about your concerns, questions, or calls. On many occasions I have called the leasing office during business hours and no one answers the phone. Don't even waste your time leaving a message because they won't call you back. Second, I moved into my apartment and it was so blatantly obvious they did not do a walk through before hand to make sure the apartment was good to go. I moved in with a broken AC unit, broken drawers in the kitchen, broken door to my washer/dryer, a toilet that runs constantly, and little insects EVERYWHERE! Honestly there was much more wrong with the apartment upon moving in, but the list is too long. I had to fight with the maintenance team to fix my AC, because of course "there was nothing wrong with it" even though my bill was close to $300 for a one bedroom 800 square foot apartment. Third, there was a mouse in my apartment and they literally didn't do anything about it for 2 days. I had to vacate my apartment until pest control could come by. I have no idea why I am paying every month for pest control but yet I can't get them to come out on my timeframe. When maintenance came to check under my sink they found three large holes under my cabinets where the mouse got in. The kicker? They had just finished replacing my water heater and NO ONE FILLED THE HOLES. Lastly, I was a day late paying my rent honestly I just forgot, you would think someone like me who always pays their rent before the 1st they would send a reminder and say "hey, rent is due." Nope nothing. So they gave me a $100 late fee. I called the office to see if I could get them to take it off, because I had family in town and it just completely slipped my mind. No one picked up. Please just stay away from this place. The rent is cheap for a reason. The units are terrible and the common areas always smell like pee. Do yourself a favor and pay 100-200 dollars more for something 10 times nicer.

Hi there, thank you for taking the time to write a review. Allow me to address your points one by one. Understandably, the leasing staff can be busy at times, either giving tours to prospective tenants, speaking on the phone with residents like yourself, or making improvements to the property. The best way to reach the leasing office is to visit it in person or send an email. Pest control services are handled by an outside vendor that is scheduled to visit the property only on certain days. You can speak to the office about when those days are. Rent is due on the first of every month, as is outlined in your lease. The payment system is automated and not at all controlled by the leasing office. A late fee will be automatically applied if rent is not paid on time. If you have any other concerns, please do feel free to reach me directly at ICanHelp@AImco.com. Thank you. -George
Serious infestation of mice has been going on for a couple of decades now at Foxchase so don't believe it when mgmt responds that they will have the problem addressed. Exterminator told me they are not fixing the insides of the walls and therefore the problem will never go away. Then they have the nerve to charge for cats when having a cat is the only way to keep them out of your apartment. Its not one mouse you'll see and for every mouse you get rid of, another one will be right behind it. They come in through the water heater area and are under all your kitchen equipment and will roam your apartment at night.
This place is ok just because we are close to all our friends..this place is a shame they charge us so much money from our deposit bcoz there is wear and tear through they unit before moving about I ask the admin and the person that did put pre-move our inspection and all they said everything is good as long as no big holes( like a quarter size) and you guys are good to go..when we move out we discover a big mold behind out furniture and we are like oh we might get charged for this so we kinda expect that they will change the wall and etc.the very last day/date of our lease we went back to our unit to get something before we turn our key back we are so shook of what we saw they didnt remove the wall that have a mold what they did was only to cover up the mold with the paint how disgusting..made us realize we might have mold all over unit if this what they do to just suck up all the money..Ah oh not only that neighbors have party on weekends and get drunk and throwing bottles to the next building..visitors are always welcome without a main door key all you do is yank the door hahahaha..report this to the office but nothing happened don’t feel safe in the place
We lived here for about 2 years or so, and are so glad to be gone- the only positive thing I can say is that the size of the apartment for the money was decent. The apartments are aging- so much so that most of our walls were coated in the same drab white paint so many times that there were literally hairs from other tenants painted into the walls. That's after having to pay $90 for a professional cleaning every time someone moves out! The cabinets are falling off the hinges and are full of nails and broken mechanics. They do pest control every so often, but when we called to get our apartment sprayed after a roach infestation, the company handling that refused to spray our apartment because the technician was afraid of cats. We handled the roach issue on our own dime after multiple failed attempts to work with management on the issue. The walls are incredibly thin, and so we frequently had to deal with loud neighbors screaming at each other down the hallways or the permeating smell of weed coming in from the ventilation system. The hallways area always filthy and cleaned so infrequently that it was an embarrassment to invite anyone over. People will throw garbage off of their balcony (there's been a Christmas tree rolling around in the court of my old building for a long time), and the garbage cans are either overflowing or being picked over by people looking for free stuff. The administration staff has gone through so many turnovers that nobody really knows what's going on anymore, and it shows. Because of the huge size of this community, you have to go through the Aimco phone tree to get ahold of a real person if you have any issues, and forget about trying to reach anyone in a pinch. Once you're actually a resident, the phones won't be answered for you unless you call one of the magic 20 phone numbers perpetuated on the internet. The gyms are constantly FILTHY and people are running their own personal training gigs and letting in non-residents to use the equipment every morning. People will also stuff rags into the locks near the pool so people can let their friends come and go to the gym as they please. If all you care about is having a place to put your stuff, instead of living in a place you enjoy that values you as a resident, Foxchase is a great option. When you pay rent, you are paying the bills for these people- you deserve better than this massive garbage community. We are so glad to be gone.
This place is horrible. They will dramatically increase your rates two months before your lease date ends for the next term. You have to give two months written notice to vacant the property. If you want to do early termination it’s 5 months notice!!!! The front door to my building has been broken for a year. The guy upstairs has been stealing my mail and the community doesn’t care. There are bugs every morning in my bathtub and good luck getting a representative. I have to call 3 times min to get someone on three different days. This place has been horrible. There are much better communities around the dc area. DO NOT WASTE YOUR TIME. I wish I listened to the reviews before I signed because I finally see how bad it is.

Hi there, I have asked the community to reach out to you about your bug issue and regarding mail theft. You can submit a service request for pests in the resident portal, but please do let me know if no one has reached out to you about your concerns by emailing me at ICanHelp@Aimco.com. Thanks! -George
