This isn't Takoma Park. Sure, the name is similar, but the difference is key: Takoma is a neighborhood in DC. Tacoma Park is a city in Maryland. And while they share a border -- Eastern Avenue Is all that separates one from the other -- Takoma residents don't appreciate being confused with their neighbor. Takoma began as DC's first suburb in 1883. Back then, this railroad community was advertised as having "no malaria, pure air, and delightful shade." Today, it is still considered a healthy neighborhood, known for its vegan restaurants and walkable streets.
Takoma is about six miles north of Downtown Washington DC and is well-known for its healthy living initiatives. The homes in the area were built around 1920 and tend to have larger yards and more trees than other metro neighborhoods. Prices tend to be slightly lower in Takoma, which makes this area very popular.

Property Ratings at Gables Takoma Park
Excellent service by the leasing team, especially Sharon. We had an easy move in and love everything so far. The neighborhood is excellent and the other residents have all been friendly and welcoming. We are happy to have moved into Gables Takoma Park.
This is a great place to live. Many issues of the past have been addressed and that's a credit to the amazing staff and maintenance personnel.
The building is ok. I’ve been here for a few years and the quality of upkeep has definitely gone down. The renovations to apartments were only cosmetic and very cheaply and poorly done.
Great apartment with great staff! My experience here has been fairly consistent with very minor instances that were immediately solved by maintenance.
It’s been almost my second year at gables and my experience so far is nice. The place is great for some one who commute to work every day; very access to takoma
Months long roach infestation, no matter how spotless we keep our unit. No urgency from the building. No building- wide spraying. It’s disgusting. This place is too expensive to be this trashy.
Really great experience living here at Gables Takoma. Management responds the emails in 24hrs or less. They promptly get things fixed. Overall is a quiet and well kept building.
Move it was super easy. There was a long checklist once we put in the deposit but the office was able to walk us the through every step in the list. Took us about a week and a half to get all the info together.
I have enjoyed my first year living here. I have experienced some challenges with getting accurate and up to date paperwork in a timely manner regarding lease renewals/addendums and other account information, but am otherwise satisfied. The community is relatively quiet. The property is decently maintained, but has a couple on ongoing issues such as parking garage exit being out of order.
I really like it here. Wish I could renew my lease but it's too expensive for me to live here by myself. There was a mouse problem in my unit for a bit, but maintenance was really helpful and that's no longer an issue.
Horrible I'm not returning i'v gotten food poison on several different occasions, because the fridges cycle off and goes to a dangerous level. I've reached out to maintenance and even corporate but no one is taking this seriously.
I've been here for four years now. Thinking of renewing my lease agreement. I love the neighborhood and the management team is nice. Secure building and secure garage.
Living at Gables Takoma Park for the past years has been a beautiful experience. The building is clean and well maintained, and the staff is very friendly. It's proximity to the red line metro station makes it easier to move around. Restaurants, coffee shops, and supermarket are walking distance from the building. I highly recommend Gables Takoma Park!
I have lived here a few years, and while I like it the management of the property has gone down in the recent years. The cleaning of common spaces could be better and way packages are received is terrible.
Poor management and responsiveness on continual billing issues. Poor security - an apartment was broken into (someone was able to go around trying doors to open) and a car was stolen from the garage. Packages stolen and now management has introduced Fetch with fees. Higher than normal utilities and additional fees for sewage, trash etc. Maintenance and cleaning is good but on weekends there are residents that leave their dogs' accidents in the elevator and common areas. Constant smell of weed and smoke that enters apartment, which management says their hands are tied about.
While I like it here, moving into a new unit was not the best experience. There were so many issues with my new unit, I regretted moving. They really need to reconsider the contractors they use.
I love it here. I'd love to be able to stay longer when my lease is up. The office seems to be responsive to the tenants. And maintenance is usually very fast.
Well, so far I have had good experience with gables. The maintenance team do amazing jobs: responding to request with in hours and some time less.
Quiet space and responsive staff. Would definitely recommend if you’re into that. Price tag is high, but at this point I expect that from DC.
The neighborhood and maintenance make living at the gables great. There is weed smell throughout the halls and the main office does not communicate to the residents. Rent is fair
The maintenance staff at Gables Takoma Park is top-notch! Super responsive, work is always expertly completed, professional attitude, considerate of our living space, and excellent work ethics. A great maintenance staff like this is an intricate part of renting happily.
The walls are razor thin. My neighbor wakes up and turns on her TV around 4 - 4.30 am every morning. For some reason she sets it at a very high volume. I can hear everything and cannot sleep. I have been sleep deprived since I moved in last weekend. Since I only have a studio, there is no other room that I can escape to. I can block out the noise of the cars and trains other residents mentioned but it's impossible to do that for my neighbor's loud TV day and night. Moreover, despite the management's claims of being a smoke free community, there are residents smoking cigars and occasionally marijuana inside their apartments. Thanks to the huge hole under the main door that the management refuses to cover, all the smell, dust and noise on the hallway enter my studio. I cannot sleep and I cannot breath. I don't know what I will be doing here for the rest of my lease term. Going to work with sleepy eyes and headache isn't fun. If noise and smoke are issues for you, then do yourself a favor and stay away from the Gables at Takoma Park.

We have lived at Gables Takoma Park for about a month. We moved from Colorado during the COVID situation and so we decided to just choose an apartment without visiting. We did a lot of online research, talked to the managers here, etc and just went for it. Here's what we love: - So so close to the metro stop. - The nearby area is awesome - the little downtown of Takoma Park has a lot of conveniences such as a hardware store, USPS, good farmers market as well as cute retail/restaurants. - The neighborhood directly next to us the other direction is also nice and very walkable. It feels safe and people are respectful. - Nice variety of ethnic restaurants nearby - Mexican, Jamaican, Ethiopian, Thai, vegan soul food, etc which we enjoy - We're close to Rock Creek Park, and other parks and bike trails. Also close to outdoor basketball court! - The management here is responsive and respectful IF you communicate via phone or text. (Email is very hit or miss though.) - The fitness center onsite is well maintained and not crowded. - The apartments are in good condition and repairs/changes requested are resolved fairly quickly. - The roof patio has a grill and overall nice atmosphere. Some downsides: - While they allow pets, there's not much in the way of pet amenities on the property. You'll be walking your dogs in the neighborhoods nearby most likely because there's not really green space on the property. We've gotten used to this, but it does mean we have to cross/walk along busy Blair Road on foot to get to a good walking route. There's also a gas station right there, which does offer good gas prices but there tends to be extra trash on the ground near it. (Have to make sure my dog doesn't pick up a slim jim here and there... she's eaten a donut hole before I could stop her...) - Bike storage is advertised on the website but it's not really a thing. There are metal bike racks at the front of the property but no one uses them, I imagine because theft at night might be a concern. Our previous apartment had bike storage in the parking garage which was way more helpful. - No pool - Overall, indoor decor of spaces is a little dated compared to similar properties So, overall, I would say we enjoy this apartment and are happy with it. It's got a better price point and availability than several competitors, and overall it feels like a good deal.
