Located directly across the Arthur Kill from Staten Island, Carteret was once part of the Woodbridge Township. It became the borough of Roosevelt in 1906 and was renamed Carteret in 1922. This popular community is bordered by the Rahway River to the north, Arthur Kill to the east, and the Ernest L. Oros Wildlife Preserve to the west. Due to its central location, the borough bills itself as the "Center of it All."
Residents enjoy a fantastic location and beautiful parks. Carteret Waterfront Park has a fishing pier and access to two hiking trails: Danielle's Garden Trail and the Waterfront Fitness Trail. Shopping in Carteret is plentiful -- the brick-paved sidewalks and outdoor cafes along Washington Avenue provide historic charm and locally-owned businesses, while the shops and restaurants along Roosevelt Avenue have a more modern feel. With just 22 miles to Manhattan, 10 miles to Newark, and 70 miles to Philadelphia, residents can easily commute to nearby cities.

Property Ratings at Gateway at Carteret
My wife, two children, and I have lived at Gateway for the last two years in these wonderful apartments and we have nothing but good things to say. The apartments are well kept, as the interior and exterior was built in 2010, but management continues to add brand new appliances, like refrigerators, and washers and dryers. the surrounding area is lively, as a main road divides the apartments up, which makes me always want to go and take the kids outside. Lastly, and the greatest of all, is that the maintenance at Gateway is top-notch! We've lived in apartments for the last five years and maintenance comes immediately or the next day, unlike other places. Maintenance is very friendly and will either fix or replace any issues that you can think of. I've been really happy with the maintenance here, and would highly recommend Gateway to friends and family. Thank you, guys!!!
Apartment is OK and maintenance is good. The leasing staff and maintenance staff were good. Prospect tenant beware of these things before you move in. 1) They advertise that there is GYM in apartment but they never say that you have to pay $120 per year to use that untill the time of signing the lease. 2) I never heard of any apartment doing the lease term for 360 days(not 365 days), these guys do that and you would not know that untill you sign the lease. you have to vacate the apartment on 26th by 2 pm on your last month( you have to pay full last month rent but you can stay only for 26 days). 3) The mail packages will never be delivered to your door, you have to go and pick up the packages from the leasing office between 10 to 6 pm with in three days of the delivery of the package to avoid late pick up fee , per their new policy. 4) Most important thing is you have to give 3 months advance notice to vacate the apartment, if not the lease will be auto renewed for the full term(360 days). 5) there is only one time chance to extend the lease by 2 months after one full term. after these 2 months stay you either need to vacate by 26th of that last month or extend/renew for another 360 days, no monthly/2monthlu lease option there after.
Everything seems good when you live there. Once you move out, you will be ignored. See the details 1. Apartment is good, big and spacious. 2. They don't give the apartment 100% clean but expect you to leave 100% clean else they charge you a hefty amount. For everybody's information, NJ law states that a rental unit must be left in "broom swept" condition. 3. They are very noisy as they situated next to Roosevelt Ave which is a running road. A lot of street noise will always be bothering you. 4. Bad neighborhood. Risky to go out alone around Andrew Bishop park or nearby areas. 5. Maintenance is ok, you have to follow like anything to get things fixed. 6. You can hear the walking steps of a person from upstairs. 7. Staff talks to nicely when you are there. Once you move out, they even stop responding to your emails and calls. 8. Close to NYC bus stops which makes your commute easy. 9. They ask you to leave 5 days before the lease ends so be ready to pay 5 days hotel charge or extra rent at some other plac 10. They advertise big about the referral amount, but practically they don't pay it. Think twice before renting such a unit with higher rent and be ready to pay a hefty amount while leaving.
I submitted an online application for an apartment which was available. The necessary credit checks were also done (for both me and my wife). Few days later, management came back to me saying the apartment is not available and there is nothing else for the price. Please do not fall for the online price listed. Further to my agony, the management did not return my $100 application fee yet. Very Very poor. Zero stars if only I can give.
The apartments itself is nice and the leasing agents are very pleasant. But the tenants in my building are horrible. They constantly have parties, loud friends over after quiet hours which are 10pm-7am, and they smoke marijuana and can be smelled very strongly in my apartment. Management seems to do nothing about it even after complaints.
Coming from the dreg that is Los Angeles and the disappointments therein I was pleasantly surprised by the building and staff. I was coming from a small 800sq/ft apartment on the west coast and was blown away by the generous sizes of the apartments as well as the added amenities of hardwood floors, appliances (an unknown out in LA), and the front office staff who is always there to lend a hand or sign for a package. You can also grab a free cup of coffee on your way out each day! It's got great access to a bus that only has about 6 stops on the way to Port Authority so it's fantastic for commuters such as myself. They've also recently opened a Subway sandwich shop in the retail space below so you can grab a quick bite on the way to the elevator if you're running late.
Carteret seemed like a place that was off the map for so many people (including us) but we're really glad we moved here. The Waterfront Park is nice and the festivals have been a nice activity to go to. My husband and I moved into 101 Roosevelt in May 2015 and are loving it. Coming home from work feels so relaxing for us. High ceilings, modern and high end finishes, nice size areas. It was hard for us to find somewhere that the neighborhood felt like home, in an apartment that was nice and pet friendly. This one fit the bill. Once we stepped in and saw the apartment we knew this would be home. Our dog also adjusted very quickly. There are a lot of great eateries around; most of which deliver. The 116 bus to New York also stops right in front of the building. Getting to the Turnpike, Parkway & 440 are a breeze. There are retail spaces below the building which we hope will fill in with useful stores. So far Subway is moving in & is almost complete. Construction of 88 Roosevelt (directly in front of 101) is not disturbing & is almost complete. Some key features that we love: Bright apartment - lots of natural light comes in Very quiet apartments - you don't hear your neighbors Hardwood floors in common areas - Tile in kitchen & bathroom Very large bathroom (our groomer sets up in there with plenty of space) Lots of closets & pantry Washer & dryer in apartment Gym on the first floor Storage unit for each apartment Gated garage parking - 1 spot for 1 bedroom - 2 spots for 2 bedrooms Plenty of street parking for visitors Package service Engaging staff that makes an effort to keep everyone happy & give residents a sense of community with monthly activities Overall, great location and perfect apartment!
1. Friendly staff 2. Poor maintenance 3. Pet friendly 4. Very restrictive of pets types 5. Packages get delivered to front office 6. But they sometimes forget to tell you that a package has come. 7. Newly constructed facility with brand new appliances! 8. Sadly, some of them seem hastily installed and take weeks to fix 9. Hardwood floors! 10. Some floors have gaps, holes, or are a bit uneven 11. Parking deck! 12. That was closed 2 weeks for repairs 13. Marble kitchen with modern sink! 14. Cabinets can be a bit small and top shelves are hard to reach 15. Gas stoves! 16. But they are strong and can be smelled. 17. Vent system gets rid of smells but is incredibly loud. 18. Washer and drier are environmentally friendly and HE 19. Much longer wait time for clothing to wash and dry 20. Central air is great 21. HVAC unit is in apartment, can also be a bit loud 22. Rooms are nice. 23. Some outlets are a struggle to use 24. No pre-existing lighting options in room 25. Free apartment gym for first year 26. Gym is brand new with great equipment and 24/7 access 27. Gas is from Elizabethtown Gas 28. Electric is from PSEG 29. Water and sewer is on your rent 30. Cable ready with ok speeds 31. Cable company is comcast. 32. Bus stop to the city right in front 33. Great food nearby 34. At night trucks and large cars will occasionally drive through making lots of noise 35. Neighborhood seems quiet and relatively safe 36. Not a lot of children in the apartment 37. Trash is on each floor- has chute and recycling bins 38. Industrial sprinklers in each apartment 39. Has stairs and elevator 40. 4 story building with increasing rent per floor 41. free coffee and water in lounge 42. carts on site to move items in/out. 43. 2nd elevator near curbside for furniture moving 44. secured entry with RFID tags 45. RFID needed for parking garage too 46. decently close to grocery stores 47. has easy access to major roads 48. township seems to mail a lot about public events 49. atmosphere of neighbors is friendly 50. This place does feel like home.
This apartment is great for new couples looking to be near public transportation, highway while still having peace and quite. The leasing department is very friendly and is always hosting monthly events. I will definitely recommend this to anyone moving to the Middlesex County.
101 Roosevelt looks great. Recently constructed, each unit comes with brand new appliances and a modern appearance. Pet friendly and with a great staff, everything seems to be great a first glance here. Units all have central air and a washer and drier in the unit, as well as a free storage locker if need be. Garbage chutes are on each floor with recycling and parking is in a gated deck with 1 - 2 spaces. There is a gym on site with brand new equipment and the lobby provides free coffee. With construction of a new building across the street and parts of the building unfinished, maintenance is very busy and service can be poor at times. While the floors and and cabinets are brand new- they do deserve careful inspection. The same can be said for the bathrooms, closets, windows, and ceilings. Conveniently located with access to major highways and public transportation. Food options in the area are decent, but attractions are limited.
