Named for the body of water at the center of the neighborhood, Virginia Lake is a Reno community with an emphasis on greenery and a variety of homes.
Virginia Lake is just over 10 minutes from the center of Reno, but it looks more like a community you’d find up north. Towering trees line the streets of the older developments, while newer residential offerings in the southwest corner of the neighborhood have planted hundreds of saplings that bring an upscale feel to the streets.
Outside of the colorful homes and modern apartments is a number of different restaurants and cafes along South Virginia St., the neighborhood’s eastern border. Mediterranean, Mexican, Indian, and more are all on offer, just steps away from a popular movie theater. For those who need an escape from “The Biggest Little City in the World,” the I-80 and I-580 will carry you to Carson City or Crystal Peak Park in just a few minutes.

Parking stinks you only get one parking spot Office staff is so unprofessional Pest control is horrible there are rats roaches ants Maintenance takes forever to fix your request Corporate doesn’t care they are so lazy Please find somewhere to go This ain’t it
Management has really been working hard to make it a nice place to live. It is very clean and quite. They are pet friendly and everyone walks their dogs around the block. There is an ample amount of groomed grass around and throughout the apartments.

We're here to help and encourage you to check in with us if you ever need anything! Thank you for your 5-stars and for being a resident with us! - The Glen at Hidden Valley Team
This is by far not the worst place I’ve lived but it doesn’t provide or have washer dryer hookups. You have to go downstairs and pay to do laundry. With the price of rent we shouldn’t have to pay to do laundry.

Thanks for sharing this feedback with us. We apologize if it wasn't made clear upon your lease signing that we did not have laundry in each individual unit. With that said, we are very pleased to have recently made some wonderful improvements to the laundry facilities and do hope that you've had a chance to enjoy them. If there's anything our staff can assist with, don't hesitate to reach out. Thank you, again. - The Glen at Hidden Valley Team
Roach filled apartment when I moved in and was not professionally cleaned. Mold in my apartment tiles from leaking ac. The hallways have mold in the ceiling missing tiles and water stains all over. Doors don't lock and have been propped open because the door reader doesn't work. Mice and roaches in the hallways. Reported a neighbor for violent fighting and called the police and Nothing was done, they also were throwing cigarettes down into my patio area. The pool was open only 2 months this summer and not open the past 2 years. Took over 3 months to get light bulbs replaced.

Hi Eric, It was discouraging to read your review hoping that there would be positive feedback only to find that, unlike other residents in our community, your experience has been all bad. Many of the issues you raise are understandable and are typically resolved by filing a work order. We work each day to make sure we are doing our best to deliver a great experience to our resident community. Please contact the office so we can discuss. - The Glen at Hidden Valley Team
We had blood on the floor and wall in front of our door twice (?!) like someone had gotten into a fight. We told the office and after a week of no one cleaning it, I caved and did it. There was poop in the stair for a week that I ended up cleaning, too. I caught someone breaking into my car in the parking lot one morning. Some insane person followed me and my boy friend through the court yard yelling at us. We spoke to a girl who had one of her neighbors pull a gun out on a dog. It's definitely a place where I carried pepper spray at night. When we moved out, I took a day off of work to clean the place and make sure it was spotless. I offered to do a tour of the place with the front office to make sure every was good but they declined. And then we recieved a letter saying they decided to pass us straight to collections to pay for a new rug.

The management is either unwilling or unable to fix the multitude of issue around the property. From water damaged ceilings in the common areas to one of the pools with no furniture to the building entry doors that not only don't lock, they don't latch, this apartment complex is a smorgasbord of failed promises and weak excuses. Sure, the vendor is having trouble sourcing the parts. But over three years to fix the doors? That's just absurd. I'm also pretty sure the management never leaves the office or they might see the downed light post, emergency light that is always on, or the numerous trip hazards in the walkways. The management is polite so I guess that's a good thing. Oh, and I fully expect the management to respond and to express empathy, make excuses, promises, and generally still accomplish nothing. There are better complexes in Reno by a mile.

Been living here for two years. This place could be really nice if management wouldn’t treat it like a cash cow. Firstly, there are roaches. They say there is A/C, but that is a lie. Every building has at least one entry door that does not lock, which is bad since a crack operation is ongoing in the area. Much more, but that is the start.

Thank you for your kind review; we are happy to pass along your comments to the team here at Sundance West!
Its lengthy but accurate Cons:Cabinets falling off the hinges very often. One of the pipes under the kitchen sink kept falling off. A total of 3 times in a 2 month period. The parking lot of building 4 floods. Microwave broke took 2 months for a new one to come in. Walls are thin you hear everything. 1st summer 1 of the 3 pools worked 2nd summer no pools. YOU HAVE NO CONTROL OVER YOUR AIR CONDITIONING OR HEATING. The management decides when to switch to ac or heat. Side note: the "air conditioning" is nothing but a glorified fan, it does NOT blow cold And it sucks at being a fan. You cannot feel airflow at all. I am in building 4, the fire alarm goes off 2x a month. No lighting in rooms. Be prepared to buy a lot of lamps. Bathrooms do not have ventilation so there is an overgrowth of mold. The office staff has changed several times since I've lived here. In the beginning they were nice but not all that helpful. Now they just don't answer the phones. And they must've changed the after hours number bc now no one answers the phone. Shared laundry facility, 1 or 2 of the machines are always out of order. All my clothes come out with dark spots and holes. I washed my daughters clothes today and her dress came out with tons of holes all over it. The dryers have a metal grating in the back that is broken and has ripped holes in some of my shirts as well as a comforter. Told the office and they did nothing and said it's a 3rd party company they are not responsible. Last but not least and in my case is the final straw- everytime they switch the "air conditioning" to heat or vice versa the building (4) loses all water or all hot water. I should've known 1 week after moving in we were without water for a week. More recently we were without hot water for OVER 20 days. Could be a pro, you are assigned 1 parking spot but they do not enforce it at all. Pros: They will accept big packages for you in the office. They combine your utilities with your rent. For us it's a rip off, because our apartment gets full sun most of the day we never had to put the heater on so I know we didn't use 167 in electric then. Heater works. Plenty of street parking but beware my car was broken into a week before xmas a few months after moving in they stole my baby's carseat and stroller and keyed my ignition.
Living here is nothing but trouble. I moved in excited about the rent for a nice place with good storage space, but I quickly found out the "upgrades" they boast are just cosmetic fixes over a very junky place. Here is a taste of what it's like to live at Sundance West. Spoilers: it's not worth it. There were issues with mice, cabinet doors falling off, windows leaking, fixes taking months by maintenance (or forgotten entirely), lights in the hallways out or flickering and wires hanging from the ceiling, evacuating because of fire alarms, laundry room w/d often out of commission, and half the outlets in the unit are dead. On top of that, the water gets turned off all the time and you have to wait each season for them to change AC to heat (or vice verse), leaving you boiling or frozen, despite the fact you are paying flat rate for heat/AC and water either way. After just a few months, I wanted to leave. If you're still tempted to move in, you've been warned.

This place is lovely. I don't understand why a few same people keep writing bad reviews about sundance, i think they are the ones who keep putting glasses and trash in the isles while the staff are always trying to keep this place convinient and clean. The apartments are very well designed, spacious and bright with lots of closets and extra storage space in the balcony and good view . They have new dishwasher, microwave, fridge and oven in the kitchen and good laundry facilities on site. There is nothing more an aprtment residence can offer. The management staff are friendly and caring and any maintanance issue is taken care of , so quickly.

Anonymous - Thank you for your review. Sundance West has had challenges as we work to update the property. Renovations are never easy. However, the team and I are committed to improving the service and product we provide our residents and guests. We are excited to hear we are on the right path and that you are enjoying your apartment home. If we can be of any assistance, do not hesitate to call or stop by the office. Adan, Community Manager
Everything is good at first then they don't care. The buildings are not keep secure by management or other tenants. Management is aware of problems throughout the complex and they have nothing but excuses of why things are not fixed or corrected. Place smells like skunk weed most of the time and "there is nothing they are able to do" is their answer. Some dogs are not keep on their leashes. There is only one pool open with excuses of why there's not all 3 open. I'm a current resident and will not be renewing when this lease is over. RUN AS FAST AS YOU CAN THE OTHER WAY.

Anonymous - thank you for sharing your concerns. While Sundance West is privately owned, we are still covered by the laws of the land. These include the Landlord Tenant Law, federal, state and local laws. The State of Nevada legalized recreational marijuana in 2017. Even though this is a violation of federal law - the local police will not respond to calls of marijuana use. Sundance West is a nonsmoking community, residents can smoke on their patios and balconies. Per the Nevada Landlord Tenant Law and the terms of the Lease Agreement, we cannot enter a person's apartment under suspicion they may be smoking inside their home. We encourage all residents to speak with Nevada law makers and have the law revoked or additional stipulations added to it. There is little we can do once it became legalized. We have had one pool closed for several weeks prior to the end of the season. Pools are regulated by The City of Reno. The rapid growth in Reno has put a strain on City resources. The pool has been ready to be opened, but cannot be opened without inspection by the City. We have called weekly to have this inspection completed and have received no response. We will not open a pool without proper clearance to ensure it is safe for our residents to use. Sundance West has two other pools that can be utilized by residents. We are sorry you have not enjoyed your stay at Sundance West Apartments. We wish you luck in your future housing endeavors and hope that should you have housing needs in the future, you will give us another opportunity. Adan, Community Manager
Being forced out after living here 3 years because "renovations." Corporate Owner has decided to "renovate," raise rent 100s of dollars and kick everyone out. New residents beware! The problems these buildings have are epic. Bed bugs, black mold, sewage backups, electrical outages, FIRE, incompetent maintenance (which caused one of the fires), flooding, disintegrating concrete (breathing problems) - The apartment across from us was "renovated" in about a day and a half. A new family moved in immediately. Within 24 hours, there was a heat vent van outside for bed bugs. You will see that van often if you live here.

Anonymous - Thank you for your review. We are in the process of renovating the property and the apartments. Renovations have included new exterior paint, new windows and doors for all units, upgraded laundry rooms, new flooring in common areas and in units and new fixtures to name a few. Residents who wish to remain at Sundance West can speak to the office about requalifying and transferring units. Upgrading a unit takes approximately two weeks to complete. The Sundance West team works hard to address work orders in a timely manner. We welcome the opportunity to speak with you regarding your specific issues. Please do not hesitate to stop by the office or give us a call. Adan, Community Manager
If you have any living standards whatsoever then don't waste your time on this place. I rushed to move in because I recently moved to the area and needed housing quickly, but I wish I had researched these apartments a little further before inquiring on them. There had been two fires in my building without any stated causes. The AC sounds like a literal boat motor, and I'm embarrassed to even turn it on while I have company over. Despite the "renovations", everything is just cheaply painted over and poorly installed. My kitchen cabinet doors fall off easily, the blinds in every room are cheap and break/fall off ridiculously easily. The water is shut off every week. There was a major leak in our bedroom window the first week upon moving in. The neighbors are trashy and the assigned parking isn't enforced, so it's difficult to find a place to park. Maintenance takes months to fulfill a simple work order, the staff is rude and unprofessional. I could continue but I think that says enough.

The Air conditioning/heating is weird. I moved in because I have sever respiratory problems and they are supposed to be hard on the no smoking policy yet everyone knows the guy in the last apartment on the first floor is a smoker. They don't trim the trees so the pool is almost always overshadowed and cold and your hair gets caught on the low hanging branches. It's nice but I would make sure that the renovations are finished because they suck and are constant annoyances.

I provided everything that Sundance wanted, offered to pre-pay rent and/or an increased deposit, and the agent said that would help. Within 2 hours of filing the application and charging my credit card $35, they called back and said I did not qualify. No BK's, just lots of medical bills. They use an outside service and if your Beacon / FICA is not in their "acceptable" range, you are denied. Thanks for taking my $35.

Lived here for almost 5 months ,when I moved in the heater wasn't working and it took almost 1 1/2 months to get fixed .Didn't have a thermostat installed with wires exposed . The paint was missed matched and they don't show you the apartment before you sign the contract to make sure it is how they put it. It is almost the end of summer and my ac doesn't work properly ,I let theme know and they said that , that was all it goes ??.the gym is always filthy and dark and the air is never on. I see it as pointless to pay for the amenities when you can't enjoy them.one of the pools always has a light floating, which is dangerous.....

Good value! Nice price and a good building. Recently changed ownership and has been going through a lot of improvements. Not a lot of fun for renters, but worth the trouble for the improvements to the apartments. Hopefully, they will not raise the rent and force many of us to move once this is all done.
