Carver sits near the end of the Virginia Peninsula, a wide stretch of land between the James River and Chesapeake Bay near the Atlantic Ocean. Downtown Newport News is only four miles from Carver, so residents have easy access to dining and shopping options. Modest neighborhoods and apartment communities flank Carver’s main commercial thoroughfare, Jefferson Avenue. There are numerous retailers, services, and restaurants within this neighborhood. With an Amtrak station and the James River Bridge in the area, Carver sees plenty of through traffic, so the neighborhood has a lively feel to it, even though it’s a small town.

Property Ratings at Hartford at Anchor Point
It’s true when they say you get what you pay for. This is one of the cheapest places to rent in Hampton Roads. I moved in 1.5 years ago and they re-did the flooring the week before I moved in. My tour was in the middle of them fixing the flooring. There’s no washer/dryer hookup in the apartment, but I have a friend who lives in another apartment here with a hookup, so they’re hit and miss. The manager told me they were renovating the laundry area, but it’s been a 1.5 years and I still haven’t even found this area the manager talked about. If it does exist, I’d definitely like to know, because I hate having to use someone else’s or driving to the laundry mat. It’s just easier when it’s in your own apartment. They do spray for roaches, but not consistently. In the time I’ve lived here, I’ve only seen a handful of them though. I’ve never seen mice or raccoons either, but there are a few stray cats, so they might be keeping the mice at bay. I’ve only had to put in 2 maintenance requests and they were fixed within 2 weeks or so; they came by while I was at work. The plumbing is old, so it gets clogged easily. I do have a couple spots where the ceiling is sagging; one in the kitchen and one in the bathroom, so I assume it’s plumbing related. They just finished fixing one parking lot by the manager’s office, but the one I park in still has plenty of pot holes. They come and fill them in once or twice a year, but it just needs an overhaul like the other lot. They recently redid the outside of the building to make everything look better on the outside to an extent. The A/C is great. I keep mine in the 60’s and my electricity bill stays under $70. I like that the water is included when I make my payments. It’s a comfortable place to live in if you’re getting back on your feet and especially if you’re single. My neighbors keep to themselves and I keep to myself. In the time I’ve been here, there’s only been 2 gunshot incidents at/near the complex that I’ve noticed. As a single man, I feel safe living here. This is a good place for anyone who is looking for their first place to move in or for someone trying to get back on their feet. It’s not somewhere I see myself living for the rest of my life, but it’s good enough for me to stay for a few years. It has more downs than other apartment complexes that you’re going to pay an extra $300+ more a month for, but it’s worth the money you pay for it.
I have never been more thankful to be moving in my life. Between mold, roaches, rats, and racoons on the roof scratching and breaking through the ceiling, I don’t know where to start. There is no pool, there is no laundry service or facility. Property manager? please, you can barely find anyone here when you need anything. Please please, find somewhere else. They will lure you in with “renovated apartments” and empty promises. Good luck to anyone who has to stay here.
There’s so much to say about this apartment complex. It smells it’s roaches and mice everywhere. Police is here literally everyday. Management sucks!!! They definitely don’t do their jobs. Grass is never cut it’s always dirty. The actual apartment has mold and holes everywhere. The water and dishwasher stinks bad. I’ve called about all of this and more and all they did was spray some roach spray. This place IS NOT HEALTHY FOR CHILDREN AND I HAVE TWO LITTLE GIRLS. Thank God I’ll be moving soon but If you want to move in DONT!!
me and my fiancé have lived in this apartment for six months and everyday we wish we were in an hotel at least there they would make sure our stay was up to par . rental manager will lie about someone coming to fix ANYTHING in your home she will give you advice on how to fix it yourself. the maintenance doesn't have permission to fix anything so we haven't been able to use our left sink in three months and all she says is " someone will be out today or tomorrow ". The parking lots flood every time it rains and not a little to the point its on the sidewalk, we have an extreme gnat problem that follows not being able to use sink as well as rental manger will call and ask when you will pay rent even if you are a day late . save yourself the headache and don't move out here not even if it is your last resort
These apartments are beyond awful! There are roaches, mice, rats. The dumpsters are so overloaded that trash is all around it on the ground because they are too full to handle all the waste. There is never parking available for residents in the evening even though most of the units are empty. Many of the stairwells have no guardrails or lights. There is a lot of illegal drug activity. The amenities are a joke...self-cleaning oven doesn't clean, fridge missing shelves and drawers and as far as the pool and playground... They are in the courtyards which are padlocked and never used! Kids have to play in the parking lot. Cannot wait to leave this place! They claim they have security cameras but they don't work. The maintenance crew they have working are kids ages about 15 or 16...maybe younger and most of all faulty electrical system...fire waiting to happen with only one exit. Don't move here!
I am pissed these people are a joke my child and grandchild have mold exposure from a water leak that it took over two months to take care of I'm so tired then they moved her after being hospitalized her and my grandbaby now they move her she is in another unit maintrnce broke the fridge then gave her another one which is filthy I have pics and rusted smh she is moving as soon as I find her another place to move it's not worth it...if I could give a negative zero stars I would I'm passed pissed
This is by far the best place for the money. Management staff in office is really helpful. Peaches took care of us. I was worried about the area at first but really it’s pretty quiet.
This place is horrible. Roaches, bad neighbors, and the list goes on. They will not fix any work orders that you have or spray your apartment properly. Tenants have been requesting some work orders for over a year. No new management here. Same management; but, they don't have a maintenance man and the person in the office changes every two months. When they do get a maintenance man, he tries to fix things and they say no. Most people out here have pitbulls that are not trained. No one picks up their dogs crap. Doors on the apartment entrances are missing. There is trash all in the parking lot. The grounds are not kept up. People have window AC units. Apartments are poorly renovated. Office will give you the run around if you complain and never fix your issues. Be sure if you want to live here to visit the apartment complex on your own in the day and night to get a feel of the place. They will show you the model; but, understand, the model is the only apartment that is kept up. THEY HAVE NO MAINTENANCE MAN ON THE COMPLEX. They haven't had one in almost two years. They quit or leave after a month. Hopefully, someone in your family is handy at repairs or go online and wing it. No washer and dryer at all. The ones they have are open to the elements and are not cleaned. There is no door to the laundry room, so enter at your own risk. Dumpsters are always trashy and nasty. Glass, trash and dirty furniture. Management almost wants you to think they are doing you a favor. They don't live in this ratchet place. Cheap rent , bad credit, evictions and low pet fees come at a price. Rent here at your own risk.
Please save your time & money & go somewhere else. If you like living with reaches, bad sewage system & horrible management. Then by all means move here. Glad I got to move out ASAP. Should of never moved here!
I was moved in before the apartment was even finished. So I’ve paid my deposit and first months rent and haven’t even been able to stay in my apartment because I took their word when they said it was ready for move in. Make sure that you’re able to view YOUR actual apartment before signing lease. This will be my first and last year at Anchor Point.
Do you enjoy cockroaches? Being cheated and lied to? How about hearing gunshots? If so, this is the place for you. Stonework gardens was a nightmare. When I moved there in October of 2015, we expected to have heat and air conditioning (this is listed as an amenity in the lease), but when we got our keys, we realized there was an empty closet with a big hole in it where our A/C & heating unit was supposed to be. We went to ask the apartment people and they said they knew about that and that it would be arriving any day. About a month later we still didn't have it, despite constant efforts to find out what was going on from the apartments, and enduring freezing nights in our apartment. The longer we were there the more we noticed. Management had told us that they spray the apartments for bugs once a week, but no one ever showed to spray ours and we got cockroaches. We would be asleep in our beds and hear what sounded like gunshots followed by sirens. The list goes on, and when we were finally ready to leave, they tried to give us extra fees for breaking the lease early, despite military orders and the 30 day notice that we gave. Literally the only good thing about this place was the price and it wasn't worth it. PS: we never got our $300 security deposit back.
I have nothing bad to say. My ex husband had a nervous breakdown, got sick and passed away. I was left with bad credit and a car repossession. Hartford at Anchorpoint gave me a brand new start! I've always wanted to say thank you publicly. I'm raising two teen sons on my own. I have beautiful hard wood floors, nice space and the neighborhood is improving. Anyone who needs a second chance at life should check out these apartments. They are in a wonderful school district, Carver elementary, home of the acclaimed music program Soundscapes. We are on a safe bus line and right across the street from Ricks Cheese Steak Shop and Wal-Mart. We are also within walking distance of two small beaches ;Hilton and Huntington.
