Property Ratings at Hassalo on Eighth
My partner and I have lived here for almost a year and I can say that it's the best apartment building I've ever lived in. There's three buildings right next to each other, but we live in the 'Velomor' one. I moved from the Bay Area and the prices here can absolutely beat the prices over there. Pros: (1) We currently live in a 1bd/1bath + a den. The den is just a separate room where one wall is not fully connected to the ceiling, so it's the perfect office space. They still counted our apartment as a 1bd, so that's super awesome. (2) Area is mostly quiet and transportation is super accessible. The MAX train and shuttle cars are across the street; buses are a block away. Area is just outside of the city on the east, and is right before it gets tricky on the west. (3) There's a mall like 2 blocks away in case you want to hit up a Barnes & Noble, Hot Topic, get some boba, etc. and a small cafe across the street. (4) The buildings do monthly events! I've never attended one because I keep forgetting but there is literally always another one around the corner. (5) The interior of the apartment and the building itself is very nice. They upkeep the lobby space everyday. I can honestly list more, but these are our big five. Cons: (1) Personal con - We live right above a trash compactor, so it does get LOUD in the early morning (Window does a great job of keeping it quiet though). (2) You do hear some arguing/loud yelling from the passing unhoused, but it's not often. I can't really name anymore because this place has been absolutely great.

This building is very safe, clean, upscale, and well-managed. The concierge is always helpful and the maintenance staff are efficient, friendly, and prompt. I've lived here since 2018 and I love it. I have some issues but they're only with leasing costs and amenities restrictions, all affected by the pandemic.
There are a lot of areas in which this place cuts corners. The fake wood floors dent easily, AC units are loud and the wall control barely works, appliances are run of the mill and the paint they use for the walls is flat paint, which smudges and ruins easily. It's meant for ceilings, not walls. The hot tub and steam room are not kept clean and are quite gross. The concierge is awesome, however, it's not enough to justify paying the amount of rent that one pays to live here. You're sold on luxury living but it feels like a cheap hotel.
Hassalo has been my home for about a year now and I've never been so happy with an apartment complex. I started in a studio unit in Aster Tower, but decided about a month ago that I wanted more space and thus moved across the street to a 1 bedroom in the Elwood building. Both buildings have INCREDIBLE concierge teams - they are polite and efficient and take security very seriously. The apartments are pet-friendly with no breed restrictions and have awesome pet amenities. Maintenance requests are fulfilled same-day or sometimes within hours of submission. Management and leasing was a dream to work with - they got me into my first unit while I still lived out of state, and the transition to my second unit last month was almost seamless (that dang snow storm!). There are loading docks, dollies, and freight elevators available for move in. Location is A as you are right behind a TriMet Max line/station, streetcars, and several bus lines are nearby. There is a grocery store and a few restaurants on site as well as a medical office, Apple specialist, and H&R Block. You are in walking distance of Lloyd Center Mall, Holladay Park, the convention center/MODA Center, and the Irvington/Broadway shopping area. It is literally a 5 minute train ride across the river to downtown. It's not cheap, but nothing in Portland is these days. What Hassalo does is offer a LOT of bang for your buck. I haven't even had any issues with noise, and Hassalo has rules and procedures (quiet hours and concierge) in place for reporting and dealing with that if it arises. Paying rent and utilities is a breeze with the online portal. There are always community events and raffles going on to promote resident culture and happiness. Overall I have enjoyed every minute of my stay here and highly recommend it.
The Hassalo on Eighth complex is new to Portland and the Velomor is wonderful! The floor to ceiling windows and dark floors are beautiful and make the apartment feel even roomier. Also with high ceilings and an open floor plan 700 square feet feels like far more!
Nobody could dream better of an apartment close to grocery stores, restaurants, and at a walkable distance to almost everything. The Velomor is a dog and cat friendly environment with no size restriction. I wouldn't forget the spacious apartments with an affordable rent and energy-efficient appliance.
My husband and I moved to into Velomor from Orlando, Florida, without ever having seen the building or apartment, or having any reviews to read. The only pictures we saw were 3D renders of the building and spaces. We were pretty worried about whether or not it would be as nice as it looked online, but it looked too great to pass up. We've been here a week and it's been wonderful - totally worth the leap of faith! The staff is super friendly and accommodating. The 24 hour concierge is amazing. Everything is new and clean. There are tons of food options and shopping within walking distance. We never hear any noise from neighbors, though the building is not at full occupancy yet. We couldn't recommend Velomor more and are really excited about all the new features coming by the end of the year, like Oregon Square and the grocery store.
