A quiet reprieve from big city living, Oakdale is a charming suburb about 15 miles west of Downtown Pittsburgh, and just 11 miles south of the Pittsburgh International Airport. Though Oakdale offers a sense of seclusion from urban amenities, it has great proximity to one of Pennsylvania’s grandest metropolises and its many attractions, including Station Square, Point State Park, and PNC Park.
Oakdale is lined with single-family homes, grassy lots, and walkable streets. Families enjoy access to numerous ball fields, playgrounds, and parks such as Oakdale Neighborhood Playground and Oakdale Community Park. Though Oakdale is mainly residential, there are a few hidden gems in town. Grab a bite to eat at The Diner, a local spot for breakfast, lunch, and dinner.

Property Ratings at Hawthorne Communities
I need to break my lease. We rented in the Pittsburgh area for medical reasons, but have a home in another state. My husband passed away and the office staff would not work with me at all on breaking the lease. The assistant manager showed no compassion at all and didn’t even try to help me. I would not recommend leasing with a company that clearly puts profits above all else.

We appreciate your feedback and understand your concerns. It's unfortunate to hear about your experience with our staff during such challenging times. We assure you that we value all our residents and their satisfaction. To discuss further, we encourage you to reach out to us directly. We're here to listen and improve.
I’ve never had a maintenance issue that’s about the only good thing I can say but the ancillary fee is way overpriced for what you get. Also, they will do everything possible to make you take renters insurance from their third party and literally anything you get in writing means nothing. Nobody at the leasing office has any authority to help you and absolutely will not let you talk to the people with the authority to help. If anything I feel sorry because it has to be a miserable place to work because I have been told that AR Building will fire leasing agents if they attempt to help too much. There are other places to rent that will treat you with more respect than this company.

Lived there for two years and I'm so glad to be away from it. There are so many problems with this place that I don't think I can name them all. Walls are paper-thin, you're charged for the most random things ($33 fee to pay them through their portal), management tells you one thing and does another, multiple power outages every month, overpriced community washing machines, the quality of maintenance depends on who you get that day and what their attitude is prior to seeing you, and constant threats from management to charge an entire building for one person's mishaps. Please look elsewhere. It'll save you so much stress and save you money you didn't think you owed them.

We are so sorry you had a negative experience here at Hawthorne. There is a fee to pay your rent online if you use a credit card (which is from the credit card company). The service is free when using a checking/savings account. Please feel free to contact us to discuss any other issues you may have had.
Even the cheapest apartment listed here is not the price they tell you when you go to view it. A lot of hidden fees, and definitely not as listed price wise.

Thank you for your feedback. All of our advertising provides a price range for our units, with the lowest price listed first. There are times when that specific floor plan may not be available for a specific move-in date. We are here to assist you should you have any further questions
I love my new home! It is spacious and in good condition. They put in all new carpet, a new AC, and stove before we moved in! It's a beautiful well kept community. The office staff has been amazing! They promptly answered my millions of questions and were so patient and helpful. They sent maintenance right away to help us hook up the washer and dryer. Brandon was the agent I spoke to the most. He was beyond friendly and helpful and really seems to care about people and loves his job. I hope to stay here for years to come!

Thank you so much for the kind review! We are very happy your like your new place and look forward to you staying with us for years to come!
Kept my deposit despite a court order and proven documents. Refused to work with me in even the least bit. Gave plenty of heads up of the new order but they still did nothing.
Property Manager at Hawthorne Communities, Responded To This Review
We are sorry to hear of your dissatisfaction with our policy regarding the deposit. Although we realize certain circumstances prevent individuals from moving in, we are very clear on our policy that the deposit is non-refundable if you cancel your move in date. All applicants sign a release form that they are aware of this policy when applying. Please know that if your personal situation changes and you are able to move to this area, your deposit would be applied towards another unit of your choice. Should you have further questions please do not hesitate to contact the leasing office.
Rented here for 12 months and by the 6 month, I was ready to move out. The aparmtents are nice but very cheaply made, if you need matienince forget about it. They never come. Had someone mess and break into my car twice and told the leasing office and they said there was nothing they can do. This seems to be a very popular phase with the leasing office. Your neighbor smoking weed? There is no parking spaces? There are underage parties going on? "there is nothing we can do about it" I would not recommend this place to anyone. The apartment itself isnt bad, the management made it a living nightmare.
Walk into your "luxurious" apartment to the scent of curry and cigarettes. You'll feel right at home with the loud domestic arguments of your neighbors and smell of weed. Relax at the pool area while dozens of unsupervised kids run around and scream at the top of their lungs while their parents get hammered. You can enjoy the daily engine revving of 90's beat up cars from the PTI kids. Laundry sucks you'll have to do double cycle for anything to dry and is expensive. Management lost our pet paperwork and tried to charge $1000. They also tried to show our apartment without notifying us and didn't knock either. Luckily, I work from home and saw them come in otherwise they could have just keyed right in without us ever knowing! Also, You will maybe get a few bucks back for security deposit. I don't know what company they use to clean their carpets but apparently it cost them over $200 to do 1 apartment. For comparison, a WHOLE HOUSE cost $120 to clean carpets. Pros: Maintenance was actually awesome cable/internet included in rent and has HBO Big apartments relatively cheap Cons: Management neighbors PTI kids paper-thin walls Laundry
The place is great and very roomy. Made me feel at home as soon as I moved in.
Rent was not as advertised. Fees were added on top and they advertise emergency maintenance but this is not true. A person answers the call and no one gets back to you, even after multiple calls over the weekend. Can hear people easily through the walls. Laundry machines do not work well. They charge almost double than the local laundromats would to finally get your clothes dry. Pool is good, when the lifeguard is actually there during hours. Internet is poor and goes in and out, no say in the matter because it is through the community instead of individual billing with selected companies. I do not recommend this place.
I lived at Hawthorne apartments when I was going to Pittsburgh technical institute. It is a beautiful place to live. The apartments are very nice and comfortable.
its alittle large for one person, i did have a roommate and they moved out, its too much for me to stay, but i want too, i love my place. everything about it is great, area, pool, gym, and neighbors, we all look out for each other, theres nothing i can say is wrong, but i need a roommate to stay, i thank you all very much, much love larry
