West Ashley sits within the city of Charleston and is west of the Ashley River, hence its name, and is the birthplace of Hootie & the Blowfish’s frontman, Darius Rucker. Lined with mossy oaks, the Ashley and Stono Rivers border West Ashley, creating the breathtaking scenery for which Charleston is known. West Ashley residents enjoy close proximity to the area's only indoor mall, the Citadel Mall, and a large number of big-box stores.
Situated seven miles due west of Downtown Charleston, residents can plan on a 15- to 30-minute drive, depending on traffic, to take in all downtown has to offer. Nearby Interstate 526, which feeds directly into Charleston’s Interstate Highway 26, gives residents a fast and easy route in and out of area. Mid- to late-1900s ranch-style homes characterize the housing in outer West Ashley, but neighborhoods built in the 2000s also sprinkle the area.

Property Ratings at Hawthorne Westside
Just moved to Charleston from California about 6 months ago, knowing only my one best friend who lived here. Let me tell you, getting a place when you are not working and do not have rental history in SC is rough, but Ashley and her team have been so amazing here at Westside! I fell in love with the location to start, even I could figure out it was centrally located, and the Vanilla Chai is spot on! Facilities are well-kept and the neighbors are fun! (NOTE: the gym is definitely not utilized enough! You do not need a separate gym membership with the facilities they have here!) Coming from California, all of this was so different and welcoming; I am so glad to have landed here! So, to Ashley, Brandon, and Alexandria in front office; y'all are amazing and so sweet and accommodating to this fish out of water! I have a special shout out to the groundskeeper/handyman on site, Matt. I was hospitalized shortly after moving, for a couple months, (in which communication with the office was phenomenal!) but when I was released back into society, I was immobile, quite literally had to re-learn to walk or move. Hardest thing I have ever done in my life, and Matt, he was so sweet, putting in handicap fixtures in my bath and making sure that I would not even have to carry groceries upstairs when I was able to walk again! So big HUGE shout out to the management team at Hawthorne Westside and helping this West coast gal feel comfortable and welcome! 17/10 - Highly Recommend!

We have lived at HW for nearly eight years. Never thought we would stay in an apartment community for so long, but this has become our home! The neighbors are wonderful, the leasing and maintenance staff are efficient, kind and personable. Hawthorne is a neighborhood. The lake and grounds are so different from any other community we have ever seen. The ability to walk to a supermarket, bagel shop, pizza joint, mexican restaurant and two fast food joints within five minutes is great. It is convenient to downtown, beaches and many popular tourist destinations. And don't forget the saltwater pool, pavilion, gym, dog park and swings to enjoy while watching all the wildlife around the lake. This is a great place to live!

After living here for over two years now, I can say that Hawthorne Westside is an amazing place to live. There seems to be a decent mix of young professionals and bigger families that all reside at this community. In the office, Stephanie always goes above and beyond and ensures that all of my questions or preferences are met. Her staff of Tai and Grace are also extremely helpful and always seem to have smiles on their faces. While I thankfully haven't had major issues with my apartment, Matt and his maintenance team are always prompt and never have to be called for the same reason twice. The community has a big fishing pond with a nice fountain and benches scattered around the lake for a nice peaceful view. The pool is usually mellow and relaxing, and the community is extremely pet friendly. Would absolutely recommend this apartment complex as it checks off all of the boxes and should continue to do so!

It is very quiet here. The maintenance people are super nice. The saltwater pool is refreshing. Barring no changes, my husband and I plan to be here for a while.
