Located at the intersection of Interstates 57, 72, and 74 in east central Illinois, Champaign deftly skirts the line between small town and college town. The University of Illinois largely defines the city, with nearly 45,000 students enrolled (the city’s population totals around 85,000); as a result, Champaign is home to a growing sector of tech startups and other entrepreneurial endeavors growing out of the university’s research community and recent graduates.
The rental market includes a number of highly affordable options, including many apartments under $600 per month. Expect your schedule to be packed with community events when you live in Champaign, from the popular and wide-ranging Boneyard arts festival to the Sweetcorn Festival in neighboring Urbana. As the hometown of late movie critic Roger Ebert, Champaign’s historic Virginia Theatre hosts an annual film festival in his honor.

Property Ratings at Hessel on the Park
They take forever to fix.anything and when they do fix it it is a temporary fix and is not done well. It is falling apart and they are not keeping updated. They make mistake in giving you fines and refuse to fix it. Would not recommend to anyone. Overpriced for what you get.
I recently moved into Hessel on the Park and worked with Alexis. She was FANTASTIC! She was very responsive and attentive to all my questions and concerns. She took the time to listen to my wants and searched to find me the best unit! She gave me all the information I needed for move in and never seemed bothered by my many questions. If I emailed her, even if it was after hours she would respond immediately. When I moved in, she told me she pre-walked the unit for me and had maintenance concerns corrected before I even picked up keys. She explained everything in the lease so there were no surprises. Usually leasing agents I've dealt with completely disappear after I get keys but she has reached out to make sure everything was perfect with move in and that nothing needed to be addressed. GREAT CUSTOMER SERVICE!! GREAT RESPONSE TIME! VERY ATTENTIVE! IF LOOKING TO LEASE AT HESSEL ON THE PARK ASK FOR ALEXIS!!
Hessel on the Park recently underwent management changes, so ignore old reviews about the management. The staff has been nothing but pleasant and accommodating for us. If we ever need something repaired or looked at they have people come quickly to address any issues. Alexis is a great leasing agent but all the girls in the leasing office are wonderful! Our apartment was recently remodeled and is big and cozy with plenty of storage. Would recommend.
I decided to rent with Hessel as my first apartment out of college I thought it would be a good place with a fair price and an apartment somewhere in the middle as far as quality. I was wrong. We had issues with roaches from week 1 of move in. We constantly complained and asked for extermination during our time there (over a year) and the issue was never resolved. We kept things clean but due to previous tenants the issue with roaches was unable to be fixed with the little effort management decided to put forth. We constantly had problems with management not recording our maintenance problems, not giving us the attention that the problems required, and just being treated badly. About mid-way through our lease management switched to Green Street and they are even worse. The staff in the office is unprofessional in appearance and helpfulness. In the end we were overcharged by about $500 because they carelessly sent out our last rent statement without realizing that it was our last month there. The tenants are awful- there is no sort of standard and the property is overall gross and outdated. Things need fixed and it won't get done even if you live there!
Do not rent here: 1. Poor, unprofessional, dishonest management office. My yearly lease ended and I went to a month to month lease for 7 more months. There was an increase in the rent I was told. I paid my rent on time and online. I signed a form notifying them of when I would be moving out. A few weeks later, I was called and told in a message that I owed them a mysterious $600 that they weren't aware of until just then. I told them to email me the lease contract, which I had misplaced, so that I could see if they had doctored the lease form. They never sent me the form so I never paid it. They sent me to collections. 2. While staying here, there were many occasions where I saw other pet owners walking pit bulls and German Shephards which scared me because normally these pets are not allowed in apartments since they can be very dangerous animals. 3. On numerous occasions I would see people smoking pot (could be smelled) in cars in the parking lot. 4. My dogs found a mouse one day. 5. They told me upon move in in December that I could not move into the apartment until 4pm. I told them that was too late since I was moving my things myself. They told me I could move in earlier but the apartment was not ready as promised. I did not have a choice. The apartment was dirty when I arrived. 6.. It was obvious that they were lowering their standards to applicants as the residents started looking low income. My neighbors warned me to shut the blinds at night because they were afraid that someone would break into their place. There were numerous thefts in the laundry room. 7. Very hard to get someone to answer the phone. I usually left a message and maybe got a phone call back the next day. There was a long period of time that it was impossible to find anyone in the office during normal business hours. There were other issues but these are the ones that come fresh to my mind.
Great value, and usually run specials for new tenants. Walking distance from U of I and many restaurants. Great sized pool and workout room opened late. Townhomes are a little out dated, but they are constantly updating and the new ones look great!
Hessle on the park apartments have an on site laundry room swimming pool and a workout gym. These are pretty high quality apartments and the property is very clean.
