Taphouses and cafes line University City Blvd. and North Main St., and there’s a plethora of small businesses and shops that supply students and families alike. Blacksburg’s charming atmosphere is amplified by the quaint homes and apartments that fill the modest, tree-lined streets.

Property Ratings at Highlands at Huckleberry Ridge
First moving here was great and the grounds etc were kept up. Since that time management is poor at best and the safety of the residents is basically an afterthought. Security lights have not been functioning for months, the grounds keeping has gone from favorable to poor… the dog park is nothing but a germ infested giant kitty litter box that was to be resurfaced yearly but hasn’t happened. For what it costs to live here, I do not recommend it when there are so many other choices in the area.

Thank you for your review. We value all feedback from our residents and take each comment seriously. We apologize for any inconveniences you have experienced and will look into the issues you raised. We appreciate your honest opinion and we hope you have a pleasant experience in the future.
I love the apartment but the noise coming from my upstairs neighbors is constant and very disconcerting. I have been a resident here since August and have been subjected to the sound of the upstairs neighbors walking very loudly and also their dogs running throughout the apartment from morning to night. I submitted a noise complaint after Thanksgiving but I have been informed that these noises are "common apartment noises". I cannot wait to get to the end of my lease so that I can move and enjoy my life again. I would not recommend this apartment complex to anyone based on my personal experience. Kevin S.
The tour was amazing, the experience I had was like never before, will definitely consider it. Thanks :)

Thank you for sharing your positive feedback! We're glad to hear that you had a stellar tour experience. We hope to see you again soon!
My daughter lived here and we do not recommend it. Her and her roommate were graduate students and always studying. The complex never spoke to them about noise complaints received ( doing laundry late at night) only sent them a written notice after mulipty complaints I guess and told them they could not renew their lease. Really!! Also not enough guest parking. A friends care got towed within hours of arrival at the complex with their luggage inside. Also they moved out a month early and called the office to ask if there were move out instructions to follow and were told just to fill dime size holes and that wass it. We left the apartment very clean , vaccummed, bathrooms and kitchen cleaned. A month after their lease expired is when we finaly received the deposit and a list of what they were charged for. No where in their lease did it say you have to get the carpets proffessionally cleaned. They also charged for prepping the apartment for the next renter....... Really we left it just like it was on move in.

Due to the nature of your concerns, we think it would be best if we spoke with you directly. Please stop by our office at your earliest convenience so we can discuss these claims. We look forward to speaking with you soon.
Over priced for what you get. Made with cheap materials. You can hear everything your neighbors are doing. Management does nothing to resolve any issues. They just send out reminder emails. They are very useless. Kitchens are so small that you cannot do any cooking. Fire place is fake and do nothing but take up space. Appliances are cheap made and small. There are better places for less money all around the area.
The staff is not very knowledgeable and instead of dealing with renters issues or concerns, the staff remains a broken record of "it's in your lease". They do send out monthly newsletters which serve as reminders of the Community rules...how nice. The apartments themselves were built with very thin walls and floors and you can hear when the person above you does just about anything. Appliances are new, apartment looks nice but wish the construction was done a little better and by more reputable people. We moved in while construction was still going on and had multiple packages stolen from our front door, as did many other residents. Additionally, the fireplace is not real and produces no heat (which isn't a huge deal). Also, if you lose your key, the replacement cost is $79, why ? "because it's in your lease". Perhaps the most frustrating experience thus far with the Highlands has been the move-out process. You are forced to use a specific cleaning company for many of your move-out needs and if you decide not to then you will be charged to have them come re-do all of the cleaning services you have paid for. why ? "because it's in your lease". In our particular situation, we abided by the rules set in place by the Highlands we were still charged over $2000 in move-out fees including utilities for an apartment we had moved out of! I don't know of many young professionals or grad students that have that kind of money so if you don't, I caution you to think twice before signing a lease here, the ramifications of getting drawn in by a small community pool and brightly painted apartments located next to a trailer park could be devastating.
Despite the nice finishes of the interior of the apartment, the walls and the floors are tiny and there is poor management in dealing with complaints. I do not recommend living here and paying so much money just for the look. If you have to pay so much money and have similar issues to other apartments, do not waste your time renting here and go look elsewhere, you will save 20-30%! In addition to this, several people have complained about poor management and loud noises. Yet, nothing gets done. I have exchanged 25 emails back and forth (FOR 4 MONTHS!) for loud noises and the final answer was "Go tell the neighbor yourself to not make noises". Parking is another big disaster. Some people have a car and a bike and take 2 spots with the final result of having people parking far away because of this. I will make sure to NOT recommend this place to anybody and warn people who want to live here.

I hate living here. There are too many rules to enjoy living here. I have lived in many apartments before this one and this is by far the worse. Management is terrible and one of the workers lives in the complex and will make sure you are not going against the rules. The pool is nice but the rules take any enjoyment out of it. If you like being micromanaged go ahead and waste your money on this place. It would be nice if they fired the manager and the other girl working there because they are unprofessional and play favorites with the residents...
The staff is very nice and responds to emails quickly. They also send out newsletters and are trying to improve the community. However, the apartments themselves were built with very thin walls and floors... you can hear when the person above you walks on the wood flooring around the kitchen. The apartments are beautiful, I just wish they took more care in building the units. (Also, the fireplace is not real; it's gas and produces no heat if that's a big concern)
Although the apartment complex is still under construction the apartments themselves are wonderful. They have a very open concept which allows for the rooms to have great sights. Its backed up onto the huckleberry trail which is great to get some exercise or just go for a walk. The managing staff is always great with responding to any concerns you have with in a day. They are constantly trying to make Highlands at Huckleberry Ridge a great place to live even though its under construction. The community is made up of young families, graduate students and local business workers, so if you are trying to get away from those college party scene every weekend this is a great place to live.
The staff is really nice and the apartments look great on the surface. However, you can tell that they rushed the building process. There's paint on the carpet and walls, plastic still on parts of the fridge (they screwed the doors on before removing the plastic), paint on my door, etc... and you can hear everything. Seriously, if the people above you walk on the wood part of the floor (around the kitchen has wood flooing), I hope you don't mind hearing every step they take.
I love the new appliances and the staff is very helpful. I can't wait until the clubhouse is finished.
Highlands at Huckleberry Ridge is a great place for graduate and post grad citizens of Blacksburg. Since pets are allowed, there is a large animal population, which is perfect for many people like myself. The down-side to this is the new development aspect of the apartments. The grounds are just mounds of dirt and barren stretches next to and around the apartment buildings. The club house, pool, and gym are far behind schedule, and there is no way to reimburse the current residents for the amenities they are missing out on. However, in a year's time, this place will be the best place to be in Blacksburg. Far enough away from campus to be quiet, and close enough to be 15 minutes away is perfect for anyone looking for the campus life while not wanting to be a freshman again!
Highlands is a brand new build and with that comes some complications, such as new staff, new maintenance team, and things not quite done yet. When we moved in the Club House was not even framed. However, a timeline is in place and we are excited about what is to come. The apartments have great space and depending on where you are great views of the mountains or woods. Large bathrooms & walk-in closets with high-end finishes in the kitchen. It is off the beaten path which is great and has access to the Huckleberry Trail (Great for biking and running). Close distance to shopping in Christiansburg and Virginia Tech and Downtown Blacksburg. Perfect Location!
Faculty is amazing, area is well kept, and shopping and schools are close by! I've been here at Cottage Grove for a year and a half and love it so far. This move was the perfect choice for my family. We are located on the bus route and not even 3 blocks from my son's school. They are open 7 days a week, so call and come take a look around!
Thusfar, we are completely in love with this apartment. A hugely important factor to us was noise level- we didn't want to live in a complex of noisy undergraduates. Most of the residents here are graduate students, young professionals, and young families, and it shows in how peaceful the community is. We live on the ground floor and the most noise we hear is the occasional loud person walking to their apartment and the footsteps of our upstairs neighbor. Both are minor and can be seriously drowned out at night with a box fan (and I'm a super light sleeper). Also, when they say luxury apartments, they mean it. Everything is absolutely brand-new construction and it's awesome to be the first people to have lived here. The rent is a bit pricey- but for what we are paying as 2 people in a 2/2, we could not rent/mortgage a house anywhere NEAR this nice. Also, this complex is the absolute nicest of any we saw in the area, AND it's hugely pet-friendly which was very difficult to find in this town. We are only a 13 minute drive from VT, a 5 minute (or less) drive to shopping in Christiansburg, and only 30 minutes from shopping in Roanoke. The location and quality simply cannot be beat. Our clubhouse/fitness center is still under construction, but the staff has been very helpful in the meantime by keeping us posted with updates and offering discounted gym memberships elsewhere until the construction is finished. It is very obvious from living here for the past 2 months that a huge amount of attention went into every detail, both large and small. I love living here, and plan to stay here for a very long time!
The Highlands of Huckleberry Ridge are amazing, management is great, and very friendly, if you are looking for a place to live that is close to shopping centers and downtown these are the apartments for you. They are minutes away from VT and easy transportation. They have great amenities. They are very luxurious and cozy, price is not bad. Appliances are amazing, all stainless steel , Granite countertops and an loving fire place!!!.. washer and drier are a big plus, sunroom is greaaaaaat!!!..A lot of parking space, and pet friendly. Management is Great getting you the help you need ASAP. I haven't had any problems since i moved in, iv been here since day one, i felt welcome from the very first time i walked into the office. They keep you updated with everything that is going on. I LOVE LIVING HERE!!!
These apartments are brand new, and so nice. The quality of building material and appliances are excellent and the staff is very helpful. The clubhouse is still being built, but it scheduled to be open at the beginning of the year. Neighbors are super friendly, and there are lots of pets!
These brand new luxury apartments are really nice. Close commute to alot of stores and restaurants.
The Highlands is a new complex in Blacksburg, Virginia that is nothing short of impressive. The grounds are well laid out, and the buildings are brand new. It is a wonderful place set back from the main areas of Blacksburg, providing an escape from the bustle of the town while still being close enough to everything to be convenient. The complex is a wonderful place to live in Blacksburg.
I'm from Brazil, so I needed a apartment in Blacksburg with so few informations about the country. But, the guys in Highlands at Huckleberry were so amazing and kind with me in all process. The apartment is perfect to me: size, structure, kitchen appliances... The best to me are the fireplace and spacious closets. The place is near to Christiansburg, so you have quickly access Blacksburg and Christiansburg. It's few minutes to Huckleberry Trail on foot. Amazing trail! I am loving the place. You will love too.
Finally an apartment that really feels like I'm finally home. My apartment home is a really relaxing brand new community surrounded by a serene mountain-view setting. The units are spacious and cozy. There's so much that makes this apartment special, a very nice floor plan, modern appliances, indoor laundry, and even an awesome sun room! Imagine that? If you find this too good to be true, check out the photo gallery on the internet. The Highlands make coming home a treat.
We're in a newly constructed apartment complex, and we are enjoying the comforts of our new home. The apartment is well appointed and spacious, and the complex has a path that easily connects with the Huckleberry Trail which makes for easy access to the Virginia Tech Campus or the mall and other shopping and eating locations. While the Clubhouse is still under construction, it's close enough to completion to tell that it looks great and will feature a nice looking pool and large area for relaxing and hanging out with friends poolside. It's a great place at a very reasonable price!
We have been in our apartment for a month and we love it! It is spacious and roomy and already feels like home. I am proud to call such a modern and well designed place my home. The staff here have been extremely helpful and on top of things. Our maintenance requests (help installing a tv mount) have been filled quickly and professionally. I am very impressed with all things involved with The Highlands at Huckelberry Ridge and we look forward to spending at least the next year here.
This is a very nice location. Quiet country setting and less than 5 minutes to anything you might need. The apartments are new and very roomy. Great layout. The clubhouse will be nice once it is completed. We moved in the first day they were opened and have really enjoyed it here. The staff has been super friendly and helpful.
I love the apartments and there staff. They have been very accommodating thus far and take care of any issues that may arise. However the only complaint I would have to say is the gym not opening as fast as anticipated. But they are looking into membership opportunities to gyms while we wait!
The Highlands are tucked away neatly in the mountains of Blacksburg and Christiansburg. It is a stones throw away from the gorgeous hokie stone campus of Virginia Tech. This new complex is full of wonderfully helpful management, beautifully detailed units, and handpicked clientele that makes you feel right at home.
The apartments are brand new, with top of the line appliances. It's very spacious and a great place to live.
The Highlands at Huckleberry Ridge is a luxury apartment complex in Blacksburg with easy access to Virginia Tech and surrounding schools/centers such as VCOM and the corporate research center. My unit is very nice with new, luxury appliances and fixtures. There are several amenities that are 'coming soon', as the complex is still partially under construction. Overall this is a great place to live with a variety of residents including families, young professionals, professors, and some students. Once the amenities (pool, fitness center, outdoor fireplace/common area etc.) are complete it will be an even better place to live!
I just moved into a new apartment complex, Highlands at Huckleberry Ridge, in Blacksburg and for the current rent I get more space and better quality appliances than I have found living in other apartments in Blacksburg. The rooms a large (bedrooms and living room), the kitchen is modern, we even a mini-fireplace. The bathrooms are large with more space than needed. Even the closets are large with plenty of room to hang clothes, stack storage containers, and even plenty of rack space to store additional items. There is also a washer and dryer in each unit which is a big plus as I normally had to go to a laundromat to do laundry. Not many apartment complexes have a washer and dryer in each unit and those that do have higher rent than Highlands at Huckleberry Ridge. The only few, but minor, downsides are the (1) water pressure, (2) water heat, (3) not every room has a light fixture, and (4) the location of the closet. First, the water pressure in the showers are lower than I expected, but its not terrible. If you are expecting a hot and relaxing shower with water pressure that feels like a massage after a long day at work, its not going to happen, but you can still get a thorough cleaning. The water heat is set lower than I would like. After two people take a shower you wont have heated water for other jobs like laundry for a bit. But this can be turned up if you report it to the main office. The master bedroom does have a ceiling fan with a light fixture, but all rooms don't. The rooms have high ceilings so if you need to reach the smoke detector to change the battery you are going to need a ladder, or at least a tall person on a step-stool to reach it for you. Lastly, the closet is in the bathroom. This is the first time I have seen this kind of set-up, you'll be spending a good amount of time in your bathroom since your clothes are also going to be in there so its good thing the bathrooms are pretty big. I haven't had any issues of moisture in my closet yet, but the water temp isn't high enough to give me any steam from the shower either. Overall, this is the best place I have lived so far in the past 3 years I have been in Blacksburg. So if you are reading this and you feel this place isn't for you due to some of the minor issues above, trust me, there are places that are way worse. Currently Highlands at Huckleberry Ridge is the best in Blacksburg. Plus the gym/clubhouse is almost complete, including a heated swimming pool for those cold nights!!
I've lived at Highlands at Huckleberry Ridge for a short time now... But I must say in that short time I've been everything but let down. Granted a lot of the amenities included with the apartment, Gym, Pool, etc are still under construction. But the idea and future access of them are most exciting. The apartment we stay in is a 2 bedroom, 2 bathroom layout also known as "The Scot". I must say I'm impressed with the spacious feel of it, from the just right sized bedrooms with bathrooms just as big, to the living room and solarium where guests can easily be entertained. The kitchen is of great size as well, Every bit of space you'd want for a apartment. The kitchen is also equipped with a stainless full size refrigerator, oven and microwave for convenience of the renters. Another amenity that is convenient is that a washer and dryer come standard. The master bathroom shower and tub is more than enough, especially nice for those looking to relax. Lastly, the property managers I have dealt with have been more than helpful and cheerful to deal with. Signing the lease and sending and receiving the required documents was a breeze and hassle free. I recommend these apartments to anyone looking for a affordable, good quality, relaxed atmosphere apartment complex!
We love that the apartment has lots of storage. We have been able to store a lot of unused items in the walk in closets present in every room. The living area is good size and has large windows making the area very bright and charming. We also like the size of master bedroom and master bath.
I have nothing but great comments to give to the apartments. They are brand new and have all modern appliances and extra features that I definitely am enjoying. I like that it is convenient to different shopping places in Christianburg.
If 4.5 stars were an option, I'd go with that. So far, very happy (almost 2 months in). Pros: -The apartment is nice (and new) -The materials used (and the appliances) all seem quite nice -Nice area (quick access to Huckleberry Trail) -Friendly management/staff (and community) -Pet friendly (even though we don't have pets) Cons: -A bit pricey -While the design/material choices seem great, some of the execution of the minor details seems a bit sloppy (in comparison), probably rushed is the right word. Examples are paint splatters in quite a few places (shower curtain rod, counters, etc.) a couple edges on trim that don't line up quite right, stuff like that (nothing major). Really though, this is a pretty minor con. -Much of the amenities are still under construction (obviously this won't last) Overall: Definitely nice, if a little pricey (which might not be the worst thing ever in a college town). Would definitely recommend.
This is the nicest apartment complex in Blacksburg. The buildings are sturdy. You can tell the construction wasn't rushed. The appliances are new and all work perfectly. Maintenance is easy to access. The staff in the leasing office are beyond nice and helpful. The dog policy is extremely lenient. There is a walking trail right on the property. My only complaint is that the clubhouse building has not yet been finished. The construction keeps getting delayed. However, I'm not too concerned about it since the leasing company is very invested in quality construction. I don't mind waiting for a better constructed building. This is the best place to live in Blacksburg!
I'm a former marine and now a college student at new river community college studying to be in cyber security. The apartment I live in is a one bedroom one bath. Located only 5 minutes from the new River mall site. The apartment is amazing and really nice with granite counter tops in the kitchen. Kenmore appliances, nice size master bedroom. Sunroom is the perfect size for a computer set up. Living room is a good size for mounting a tv over the virtual fireplace. Washer and dryer located in the apartment and master bath is huge with a walk in closet. Dogs are allowed, I own a Great Dane so no problem finding a place of you have a large breed.
Overall nice place, but don't particularly enjoy paying full price when the pool, volleyball court, playground, and clubhouse have not been finished yet.
Nestled back in the mountains and adjacent to the Huckleberry Trail, these apartment homes are the perfect place to live in Blacksburg, VA. If you want the peace and quiet of a mountain setting with all the convenience of living right in town, Highlands is the perfect place to live. The complex is located right near the Huckleberry Trail, allowing for long, peaceful walks on the trail in the evenings, a brisk run in the morning, or an energizing bike ride to and from VT campus. They are currently finishing the 24 hr. fitness center (which looks wonderful from the outside), pool and playground. All of which will provide the ultimate combination of convenience and activity for singles and families alike. The apartments are gorgeous and fit the "luxury" description perfectly. Marble counter-tops in the kitchen, stainless steel appliances, large master bathtubs. It's like living permanently in a gorgeous vacation rental! All the rooms are spacious, if you have a loft it's essentially an extra living room or an enormous office space. The bathrooms are luxuriously large, providing ample room for decorative additions. The sun room/solarium offers ample natural light throughout the day, and can function as a small office, a playroom if you add a baby-gate, or a cozy nook for reading. If you're on a second floor or higher you have lovely views. Maintenance and management are huge pluses, and management in particular (Emma) was a strong selling point for the complex. Maintenance is quick with anything labeled an emergency or high priority, and management is solicitous, concerned, and always able to answer any questions or concerns that arise. Unlike most apartment complexes in Blacksburg, Highlands does not specifically cater to undergraduate college students, making for a wonderfully quiet and peaceful atmosphere day in and day out. These apartment homes are comparable in cost to other apartment options in Blacksburg, but they are much larger and far more worthwhile. We assumed "energy efficient" would merely be a buzzword, but costs for a/c are only a fraction what we paid at our previous, much smaller apartment. Highlands is the perfect place to live, whether for a short period of time during school or longterm before purchasing a house. Everyone who visits us gushes over how beautiful and spacious the apartment is, not to mention the views. Live here! It's amazing!
This is the perfect building if you want to feel nature in this town. I cannot wait to see the main complex building soon. It’s like having a touch of country right in the middle of the town.
We love living in this luxurious apartment complex. It's close to work and school and it is quiet. We love spending time at the huckleberry trail just down the road too! It's a wonderful community!
The Good: The apartment itself is great- very nice finishes and a great layout. They are very pet friendly, and the other residents are very neighborly. The view (at least from my building) is pretty good - great view of the mountains, less great view of the trailer park across the street, but that's not the Highlands fault. The apartment cools off pretty quickly (if the AC is working- we've had some issues). Also, I love having a door that leads to the exterior instead of having to walk through a building to get to my apartment. The Bad: What the website fails to mention is that construction is far from finished. As someone who has worked in housing before, I understand the difficulties of opening a new build and was willing to give some flexibility, but the Highlands at Huckleberry Ridge is definitely pushing it. Of all of the amenities listed, none of them are complete and available for residents to use. I moved in expecting a gym, pool, cafe and community area, none of which are ready, (but don't worry, you'll still pay for them - they don't discount your rent for that) and we didn't find out until we moved in that that was the case. And the ugly: Expect maintenance to be like a roommate- they'll be in your apartment all the time, and they have no qualms about keying into your apartment while you're away or in the shower (I've experienced both in the 2 months I've lived here). I would totally understand if there was an emergency, but maintenance keyed into my apartment while I was in the shower to check if an outlet cover was missing...a lot of the issues they are fixing seem like things that ought to have been done during the final walkthrough before opening the building. Also, communication from the office is a joke - occasionally I'll find a note rolled up on my door (or near because the wind blows them away), usually to tell me about maintenance coming to visit again. I haven't heard anything from the leasing office about the status of construction or when the amenities they claim on the website will actually be available for use. (If management reads this, I'd suggest a monthly email bulletin with updates about construction progress and other things going on at the Highlands and using email as the primary form of communication instead of rolled up notes.)
I have lived at Huckleberry Ridge for 4 months now.. They opened May 15th and I moved in May 17th. Well, maybe it was just dumb luck but I could not have found a better place. The apartment is beautiful, different than the standard. For people moving in now, you can even choose your color wall in the kitchen/ dinning area. The staff with Emma and Eric could not be more helpful but they also are good about respecting your privacy. Overall, the whole environment here feels more like a home than "a rental".... and a classy home at that!
These new apartments offer incredible amenities without a hefty monthly lease. Granite countertops, pendant lights, a fake fireplace, and arched entryways all come standard. If you're like me and never seem to use your patio, the Highlands have nixed them altogether and instead added a sunroom off the living room. This makes the main living area seem massive! This apartment complex signifies a boom in development in areas in and around Blacksburg. I'm excited to see what's next!
Great apartment living!! Spacious rooms with great amenities. Granite countertops, skylights, electronic fireplace, huge bathrooms and last but not least a state of the art set up for your entertainment systems. I believe they thought of everything when they built these apartments. Very Very Pleased
The apartments are well-appointed, and the mountain views from my living room window are stunning. Office staff and maintenance are friendly and very responsive. As a professional, I was looking for a quiet apartment that wouldn't have a loud, late-night crowd around. For the most part, the apartment is well-suited for professionals and families (I am in both categories). Design factors make having a room near a stairwell kind of noisy. Also, there aren't ceiling light fixtures in bedrooms, which is weird.
We moved here in June when the apartments were first being built. It is a nice community located in a quiet area connected to the huckleberry trail. Since we have been here we have received above outstanding customer service from Emma who ensures that all maintence is resolved and documented. Her kindness and hard work goes above and beyond any I have ever had before and deserves reward, especially for all the hard work she has been carrying during the initial opening!
We love living at The Highlands. The apartment is still under construction, but the apartment managers have kept us in the loop about how long things will take. We love that we are so close to the Huckleberry Trail and can walk to it from our building. Once the main building is finished, we look forward to the 24 hour fitness center.
Very nice cabinets and counters. The buildings are brand new and the maintenance staff is very helpful.
These apartments are very nice. Brand new, great view of the mountains, appliances are nice, love the open feel of the apartment, it honestly feels like you are living in a small house.
Highlands at Huckleberry Ridge is a great place. Quiet. Good neighbors, mostly professionals and graduate students. Perfect location. Near to most shopping stores and supermarkets. Very welcoming staff, from leasing, management to service.
