Best known as the home of Ferris State University, Big Rapids is a small city on the banks of the Muskegon River in west-central Michigan. The university’s student population outnumbers the city’s permanent residents, giving the community a distinctive college town atmosphere – the downtown area around the intersection of Michigan Avenue and Maple Street is major walking district offering up a wide selection of specialty shops, restaurants, entertainment venues, and nightlife hotspots. Catch a movie at AMC Classic Big Rapids 4, then walk up the street for dinner and a pint at Raven Brewing & BBQ.
The local rental market caters to the student population with abundant budget-friendly apartments, condos, and houses all over town. The Ferris State campus on the south side of town is a major focal point for the community, especially when the Bulldogs are playing on home ice.

Property Ratings at Hillcrest Apartments
Lived here for one year and couldn't get out quick enough. Property and yard not kept clean, always smelled like cigarettes in my apartment because the smell came through the walls. Had to call the cops on the upstairs neighbors at 1am. Maintenance claims to be available 24/7 for emergencies, but when my ceiling has water dripping from it, I couldn't get a hold of anyone. I had to leave a voicemail and go into the office the next morning and already had puddles on my floor. Office is almost never open even when they say they are. Got falsely charged for a missing key when I moved out even though I turned them all in. Stay away from this place!!
Property Manager at Hillcrest Apartments, Responded To This Review
Hi, we're disappointed to hear of the negative experience you had at our location. We would like to speak with you to discuss your experience further. Please call the office at 231-796-7879 and ask for the General Manager. Thank you, Dee Eno General Manager
We’ve lived at Hillcrest for almost a year and have had issues from the day we moved in. When we moved in the apartment was not cleaned what so ever and there was a bug infestation. The staff besides one girl is extremely rude and unhelpful, the maintenance men are so sweet though! The office doesn’t care at all about noise complaints, we’ve done many due to the people above us banging on the floor for hours, playing drums at 3am everyday on the dot and screaming matches. Last noise complaint we did I was told to call the police and stop bothering the staff. Most of my belongings have been stolen out of the washers and dryers didn’t matter if it was wet or dry and I was told it’s my problem by the office. The people that live in Hillcrest are extremely rude and do not care at all, nobody picks up their dogs mess outside either. Honestly just not a good place to live and I wish I would’ve found something else.
Maintenance over the summer is taken care of by multiple parties. There are NO 24 hour notices from the office on staff entering your unit. Several times a week I would have random staff unlock and enter my unit without knocking. This even happened to me after 6pm - they do not prioritize the safety or privacy of their tenants. YOU CANNOT USE ETHERNET at these apartments. The WiFi is Spectrum Community WiFi and the router is in the wall. The WiFi is unreliable and was my main reason for vacating - it was hit or miss if it could handle a zoom call. The parking lot is in severe disrepair, if you drive a smaller vehicle the potholes are large enough to make your car bottom out. The pet policy is lenient, but there are not enough trash cans and there are mountains of waste near the apartments. Requests for fixes can take an incredibly long time and you will have to be loud in order to get them fixed. It's a large complex that's been resold a few times in the last 10 years, the front desk is nice but it's genuinely not worth the price.
Maintenance always handles my issues quickly and effectively. They are also very cordial, especially Matt.
My experience living here has been awful and continues to go downhill. It began by being extremely unorganized and multiple people received the wrong keys and ended up walking into others apartments which was very embarrassing and uncomfortable. When I moved in, I watched the maintenance guy sweep all the dirt to the corner of the living room and mop over top of all the dirt...that was my $100 cleaning fee I paid for. Great start! Once you are moved in you will realize the multiple of problems your apartment has. If you like to sleep at night, do not live at Hillcrest. You will hear every foot step, every fire alarm, every couple that has sex, and EVERY SINGLE DOG. Parking spaces are awful and my car is in extremely nice condition with no scraps or dents and after living at Hillcrest I have two new marks that I am horridly mad about. Be aware of EXTREME unorganization if you live here, management is awful in many more ways. There are many more complaints I have, please BEWARE! Hillcrest is the slum of Big Rapids.
Staff is very accommodating and friendly! They have been extremely helpful! The apartments look nice and are perfect for college students. They are doing a lot of upgrades and have an awesome environment.
Oakwood is super nice and fun for college students! They have a nice outdoor courtyard with basketball courts and volleyball courts, and are putting a lot into new innovations!
I love these apartments they are great. They are big nice, and I love them
The Hillcrest / Oakwood team has a great staff and deal with issues in a timely fashion, every time I stop in the office the staff are more then willing to help me and are super friendly. The main maintenance guy George is quick to answering work orders and goes above and beyond to help residence. The staff does a good job letting use know if hours change and sending out email with upcoming event or any info we might need. The main people in the office go out of the way to get to know who the residents are and can name most if not all by full name. plus they have some of the best prices in the area, lately they have been hosting more events like game night and food drives for some awesome prizes and it makes getting to know other residents that much easier. I would recommend living at Hillcrest / Oawood to anyone. Best place to live in Big Rapids hands down.
AVOID HILLCREST APARTMENTS. Its a great price and nice amenities, BEWARE!!! The new management of 2016 is absolutely terrible. Electricity issues, internet not working for weeks; numerous other problems and management take about a month to fix.FREE internet sounds great, until it stops working and the office takes weeks on end to fix it. Electricity issues lead to numerous electronics getting fried. At first this is a nice place to live/and a good price, but after you have problem with your apartment; Management is ruthless and does not give a rats --- about your problems. After living with no electricity in the living room for over a month, management finally got a electrician out to fix the problem. Even if another apartment is more expensive. GO WITH THE APARTMENT AND DON'T STAY AT HILLCREST APARTMENTS.
